ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The publication of this 2011 Statistical Year Book appends another feather to the

indication of the zeal and enthusiasm of the Statistics Data Producers. Our

Statistics friendly Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi is the pivot figure that

propels the entire engine of the growth of the Anambra State Statistical System.

The support of our Governor in terms of positive political will in embracing the

State Bureau of Statistics (SBS) and giving necessary support and releases as and

when due engenders this publication.

The one goal and one target spirit of the entire Anambra State Statistical family

propels the easy gathering and processing of the data from all the stakeholders

MDAs and Local Government Areas and by the staff of the SBS.

I want to also appreciate our technical patrons – NBS, who has lightened the task

for us by developing the data collection formats/tools for easy statistical data

collection. Also World Bank, UNDP, DFID etc. that have consistently given us their

backing in one way or the other and ensuring staff skill development and

equipment of the Bureau are not left out in our thanksgiving. All these forces

work together to guarantee this 2011 SYB production. I say a big thanks to you

all.

Izuchukwu, I. B. (JP) State Statistician General

FOREWORD

Anambra State Statistical System has come a long way. Before the advent of the

present State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Peter Obi,

statistics had virtually no place in governance. This was because previous

governments did not fully appreciate the benefits of data-based planning for

good governance.

In contrast, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi from the outset saw in statistics an

indispensable tool for the actualization of his vision of achieving the multi-

sectoral (MDGs through the equally multi-sectoral Anambra Integrated

Development Strategy (ANIDS). This can be attested to by the successes of ANIDS

in all sectors of the economy.

Because NIDS is basically a planning and budgeting strategy, whose effectiveness

depends on the availability of reliable statistical data, His Excellency has given

very commendable the State Bureau of Statistics, resulting in similar support from

various Development Partners. The publication of the State’s Statistical Year

Book is one of the dividends of this support. No wonder the Governor has

received national and international recognition for data-based planning as a

“Data-friendly governor”.

This 2011 edition of the Statistical Year Book is indicative of our determination to

achieve far reaching improvement in data production. I strongly commend the

efforts of the Statistician General and all the staff of the State Bureau of Statistics

for the hard work that has gone into the production of this publication. I am

also appreciative of the contributions of the various Ministries, Departments and

Agencies (MDAs), as well as the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the State.

Our Development partners have also been there for us and I thank them for their

support to ensure the development of Statistics in Anambra State in particular

and Nigerian in general.

It is hoped that users of statistics will find satisfaction in the use of this

publication. Above all, our doors are open to constructive criticism from readers

for the improvement of future editions.

Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Economic planning and Budget Awka

Fig. 3.1 reveals that the state has more female manpower (53.2% of their total population) than

male manpower (46.8% of their total population).

CHAPTER 5

MOTOR VEHICHLE STATISTICS

The section contains data on the Registration of vehicles by Private/Government/Type,

traffic offences by Type and Number of road accidents by type of vehicles.

Fig. 5.1 Registration of Vehicles by Private/ Government and Type, 2011.

In Fig. 5.1 above and Table 5.1 below, it could be observed that privates represent 19.4%,

buses 16.2%, Lorries 1.2%, wagons 3.5%, motor cycles 59.3% and LGA 0.3% respectively, of

the total number of vehicles registered in 2011. This goes to show that more motorcycles

are registered in the state followed by Private, Buses, Wagon and Lorries with the LGA

registration bringing up the rear. Little wonder then why one tends to see more motorcycles

on our roads at any given point in time than any other means of transportation.

Page 27: Statistical Year Book 2011

Fig. 5.2: Traffic Offences by Type, 2011.

In Fig.5.2 above and Table 5.2 below, Reckless Driving (42 %) ranked first in the traffic offences

recorded in the state followed by Overloading (27 %), Mechanical Fault (22 %) and lastly Others (9

%).

Fig.5.3: Number of Road Accidents by Type, 2011

Fig. 5.3 above and Table 5.3 below indicates that out of road accidents recorded in the state, Serous

road accidents represents 50.7 %, followed by Fatal road accidents representing 31.9% and Minor

road accidents representing 50.7% of the total accidents.

It can be readily inferred that most of the accidents occurring in the state for the year resulted in

serious accidents which informs why the Federal Road safety Corps in Anambra State have carried

out numerous campaign through the media, market places, churches village squares etc. intimating

road users on the need of obeying road rules and regulations and the need for careful driving so as

to reduce or minimise the occurrence of accidents for life is dear.

JUSTICE AND CRIME STATISTICS

This section provides information on the Number of Fire outbreaks and casualties, Population of

prison inmates and the Distribution of persons committed to prison by age, 2011.

Fig. 7.1: Number of Fire Outbreak by Local Government Area, 2011

Fig. 7.1 above and table 7.1 below indicated that Awka South Local Aovernment area recorded the

highest number of fire outbreak followed by Onitsha North. Nnewi North Local Government area

recorded the third highest in the state. This might stem from the fact that these 3 local government

areas are mostly metropolitan and have a lot of population. Oyi local government area recorded the

least number of fire outbreaks in the state in 2011.

It may be important to note that a lot of properties worth hundreds of millions of naira were gutted

in the fire incidences around the state. More properties were lost in the fire outbreaks in Onitsha

North, followed by Nnewi North and Nnewi South local government areas. Oyi local government

area also recorded the least destruction of property in the fire outbreak in the year, 2011.

It is worthy of note that a total of six lives were lost in the fire outbreaks in only two local

government areas namely: Nnewi North and Ihiala local government areas respectively.

CHAPTER 9

EDUCATION STATISTICS

This chapter contains data on Number of schools and classrooms, Primary and Secondary schools enrolment,

Distribution of teachers in primary school, Number of teaching staff in primary/secondary school by

qualification.

It provides information that gives room for a lot of inferences to be made in the education sector.

Fig. 9.1: Primary School Enrolment in Anambra State, 2011.

In fig. 9.1 and tables 9.1 & 9.2, it will be seen that the number of pupils in primary two reduced in number than the pupils

in primary one. This may be as a result of poor performance in primary one. The figure increased from 119151 in primary

three to 119151 in primary four. The enrolment nose-dived again in primary five and rose sharply to 125,215 (92.83%) in

primary six. It is worthy of note that some pupils tend to register for common entrance examination from primary five

which may have invariably caused the increase in the number of pupils in primary six.

Fig. 9.2: Secondary Schools Enrolment in Anambra State, 2011.

In fig. 9.2 above and table 9.4 & 9.5 below, it will be observed that a total number of 23,436 students successfully passed

Common Entrance Exams and enrolled into JSS1. This number increased in JSS2 and decreased in JSS3. Their population

decreased in SSS1. This may be as a result of failure of the JSS3 examination or that a lot of students decided to drop-out

from school due to financial constraints or inability to cope intellectually.

Fig. 9.3 Number of Teaching Staff in Primary School by Qualification, 2011

Table 9.6 below and fig. 9.3 above show that out of the total number of teachers (8, 396) in primary school, 93% of them

are female while 6.6% of them are male.
