Eucharistic Adoration will be in the chapel. Novena and Prayer Team will be in the Church.

Today, the Church universal celebrates Laetare Sunday. The word “laetare” comes from the Latin word “rejoice.” The fourth, or middle, Sunday of Lent, called Laetare, comes from the first words of the Introit at Mass, “Rejoice, O Jerusalem.” Most Sundays, after we sing the opening hymn, Matt Simpson, our Director of Music, chants the Introit. The Introit

normally comes from a passage of Scripture incorporating the theme of the Mass. The full text of the introit for today is, “Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast.” (Is 66:10-11) We are now halfway through Lent, and the Catholic Church (the New Jerusalem – the place where the people come to encounter God) stops and reminds us to refresh our hearts and minds, encouraging us that our Lenten journey is not in vain, and we will make it to the joys of Easter. The Prophet, Isaiah, reminds us that our sin and suffering leads us into mourning. The Prophet does not want us to dwell on this bitterness. Rather, we are to believe in the power of the Resurrection. The strength of the Scriptures and feeding on Holy Communion brings us close to “her (the church’s) consoling breast.” (Think of St. John resting on the breast of Jesus at the Last Supper, being consoled by his holy heart). Like our Lord, who conquered the power of sin and death, we, too, are being fed through the Church, carrying us into the life of the Risen Christ. Our hearts are filled with the encouragement of the Lord in these sacred mysteries, allowing us to persevere. Thus, may we rejoice that we have come this far in our renewal of body, mind and spirit! If we have failed, the Church asks us to still rejoice and start anew, knowing that Christ, who fell three times on the road to Calvary, got back up and kept going! In the next couple of weeks, if we haven’t attended Stations of the Cross, Night Prayer, a daily Mass, written and reflected with notes in our Mass/Prayer journal, attended the Wild Goose series, prayed the rosary, or sat quietly in the chapel, then this is the time to start or ramp it up. Prayer makes it easy to fast because we give of our time to enter these experiences. Our almsgiving is our parish renewal with the CSA. I pray that all three imperatives, which we heard in the Scriptures on Ash Wednesday, are taking root in your minds and hearts. Next weekend, our high school is presenting the play, Beauty and the Beast. The high school productions are always phenomenal, and this year will be no exception. If you desire to go, I encourage you to get your tickets now, as the shows sell out quickly. See the Infant or the DC websites for performance dates and times.

When it comes to the mission of unleashing the Gospel here in our parish, it cannot be the project of just Fr. Jim and myself, or the parish staff. No, instead, the call to evangelize is given to each one of us at our baptism. Every time I baptize babies, I make sure to remind the parents that the great commission given to us by our Lord to go and make disciples of all nations, includes these small

precious babies as well. The gift that they are given is the ability to satisfy an essential role in sharing the Gospel in the world. If you are baptized, you have a mission to evangelize. In the pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel, the Archbishop reminded us that in this most important mission, there are no bystanders. It is not possible to just sit by and watch and expect things to change.

It is not as if we were preparing for war and each of us are anxiously awaiting whether we will be drafted into the fight. Each of us have already been conscripted through our baptism. This season of Lent is a season of returning to the call that we received at baptism. Letting the grace of our baptism guide each part of our lives. Maybe we need to dust off our draft card. Maybe we never knew that we had a role in the battle to win the world for Christ. Either way, the line is in the sand as to whether we are “in” or “out.” The choice is ours! It is my prayer that we, as a parish, may enthusiastically respond to this call!

Catholics are called to deepen their spiritual lives through the practices of Prayer, Fast ing & Almsgiving.

The rite reminds us that the scrutinies are for the community as well as the elect. The value of the scrutiny experience can be transformative for anyone who is spiritually prepared. One can experience God’s gifting love and presence, and that presence uncovers and reveals attitudes that are contrary to right a relationship with God – namely sin. The scrutinies also raise up attitudes and gifts that deepen our relationship with God. You are invited to share in this spiritual experience with the elect, candidates and sponsors of the RCIA process by participating in this rite.

Continue to pray for these people whose RCIA journey is leading them to the Easter sacraments.

Meet Candidate Dave Kuhn: I have been an Episcopalian since birth but never fully engaged in the church. Spirituality and faith in Christianity have been present throughout my life. Although there have been moments when I have questioned its existence and purpose. However, those questions have always been answered through providence in my life experiences. Attending weekly Mass at Divine Child as a volunteer parent chaperone for my sons class last year solidified my path. The experience of the Catholic Mass invoked great emotion and overall feeling. The Holy Spirit truly touched my heart and I haven’t looked back. RCIA has expanded my

knowledge to further my relationship with God. I would like to thank my wife for sponsoring me, my son for getting me to attend Mass, Fr. Matt, Fr. Jim and Jodi Ann for running such an impactful program. Dave’s sponsor, Ami Kuhn: I was baptized into the Catholic religion as an infant and raised surrounded by its teaching within a large and happy extended family. My understanding and trust in the faith was further amplified by the devoted following of my late grandmother. I spent many days at the cemetery clearing the headstones of lost loved ones, attending afternoon Mass and following her lead volunteering at our local K of C. When I was approached by my husband to be his sponsor I had assumed his decision to convert was because he wanted to follow the path he has witnessed in my family and that we have chosen to bestow upon our son. Through the RCIA process I have learned that his desire to transition is also of personal motivation. It has been a pleasure accompanying him through a journey that has reinforced my belief in the faith and will solidify the unity in our family. Meet Candidate Amanda Dawnrich: Initially, I enrolled my foster, soon-to-be adopted children into Catechism at DC because I knew I wanted them to be raised Catholic and eventually, attend a Catholic school for their education. Although I was raised Baptist and attended a Baptist school for most of my education, I never planned to convert to Catholicism myself. In walked Dawn Dwyer who is head of religious education and she was like a breath of fresh air. She was patient and kind and knowledgeable with my children and myself, which made me in turn start feeling I wanted to be a part of a religious congregation where I felt unified, eager to learn and just so in tune with the Lord. As soon as I started RCIA classes with Jodi Ann, I felt a very special pull to have her as

my Sponsor – I truly believe a special Saint in Heaven was drawing me closer to her. Just like with Dawn, Jodi Ann makes me feel supported, appreciated and worthy. I'm so thankful and grateful to be welcomed into the Catholic Church and into the Divine Child Parish. Amanda’s sponsor, Jodi Ann Micallef: I’m very grateful to be Amanda’s sponsor. We were brought together when Amanda entered the RCIA process. Amanda has a strong desire to grow closer to God through the Catholic Church. Being with her, I’ve grown in gratitude for the gift the Sacraments, and the practice of my Catholic faith. It is awesome to see how the Holy Spirit works in our lives!

RCIA The Next Step in the RCIA Journey: Scrutinies

On Saturday February 17, the catechumens (unbaptized), the candidates (baptized) and sponsors of the RCIA process celebrated the Rite of Election by Bishop Hanchon at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The next stage of the RCIA journey is the Period of Purification and Enlightenment which began on the first Sunday of Lent. The rites that belong to this period are called Scrutinies. The scrutinies are solemnly celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent and are reinforced by an exorcism. These rites take seriously the profound love of God and the desire of God to bring all people to full freedom and salvation. As one deepens in one’s awareness of the graciousness of the gift of God’s love, one also sensitive to the barriers that keep this love from transforming and recreating life: barriers of sin and evil. The scrutinies rise up and expose whatever keeps the transforming love of God from liberating all forms of oppression. The scrutinies unmask the deception of evil and sin for what they really are: robbers of authentic and true life. The focus of the scrutinies is toward life, toward freedom, toward salvation. Chili Cha-Cha…Another Success! By Mindy Delano

The Sacred Heart/Divine Child St. Vincent de Paul partnered with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in another successful fund-raiser, earning just shy of $21,000. This was their 11th Annual Chili Cha-Cha, which was a sell-out almost before the 2nd week of ticket sales. The sold-out event took place on January 27th at Sacred Heart’s parish hall.

The St. Vincent de Paul and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen were each awarded approximately $10,000 after deduction of food costs. Silent auction aided to bring in very good bidding; the Silver Spoon Sponsor campaign and the Good Samaritan campaign boosted donations incredibly, making this year’s event the highest earnings ever.

“We are so grateful for our wonderful Chef Alison, the Chili Cha-Cha Committee, the volunteers, the guests, and the sponsors who supported our missions,” said Pamela Szpytman, President of the Sacred Heart/Divine Child St. Vincent de Paul. She added she was proud of the new initiative called Silver Spoon Sponsors who brought in almost $8,000 from individual donors. It’s incredible! “Everyone who contributed is an angel,” she said smiling.

Chef, Alison Costello, has been the fund-raiser’s excellent Chef all eleven years. She serves as Chef of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Amazingly, Alison undertakes and directs preparation for the entire dinner, providing several different choices of chili, salads, cornbread, and desserts.

Entertainment was provided by Little Davy and the Diplomats. SVdP will be able to assist the needy with food, rent, heating bills, and other delinquent bills, while the Capuchins can continue to provide warm, comfort food to its hungry visitors.

Chairperson, Fran Helner, has a long-standing tradition with the event, working tirelessly behind the scenes as well as providing her talent as host of the event.

According to Brother Jerry Johnson, Director of Capuchin Soup Kitchen, “we are certainly blessed to have this alliance with SVdP for this event and appreciate all the hard work.”

LAETARE SUNDAY (What…more Latin?)

A little light breaks into Lent this Sunday… The Fourth Sunday of Lent is called Laetare Sunday, when the Church takes a bit of breather from Lenten practice and opens Mass with the Entrance Antiphon, “Rejoice, Jerusalem … Be joyful, all who were in mourning!” – taken from Isaiah chapter 66. Laetare Sunday, is marked by a relaxation of the penitential character of the Lenten season. We are supposed to REJOICE in the middle of Lent! On this Sunday, we look with expectation to the great Solemnity of Easter for which we have been preparing ourselves during this Lenten season. By its anticipation of the joy of Easter, Laetare Sunday is meant to give us hope and encouragement as we slowly progress towards the Paschal Feast. Priests wear rose vestments on both Laetare Sunday and Gaudete Sunday (the Third Sunday of Advent). The color rose is used as a sign of joy and may stem from an ancient papal tradition of sending blessed golden roses to Catholic heads of state in Europe on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. In some cultures the Fourth Sunday of Lent is celebrated as “Mothering Sunday”. This was a day when Europeans honor their mothers, much like our American Mothers’ Day. Faithful might also make a pilgrimage to their baptismal church or “mother church” on Laetare Sunday. The time has come and the Knights of Columbus has created a pilot membership program in certain jurisdictions. Michigan has been chosen to help launch this new E-Membership Program.

Knights of Columbus E-Membership has some of the same benefits as Degreed Knighthood. Your $30.00 annual e-membership dues will include:

A Welcome Package with a membership card (giving access to KofC lounges throughout the country, but not council meetings), Columbia magazine, and a copy of the “Into the Breach.”

Access to the Online Membership Portal including its faith, values, insurance and charitable content.

This is a stepping point for men to become part of this Catholic Men’s Fraternity without declaring any affiliation to a particular council or attending any meetings. When the time comes and you decide you are ready to pick a Council and attend meetings, then you would contact a council of your choosing and go through a Degree Ceremony to transition into a Degreed Knight. Your e-membership dues would be credited towards your annual council dues.

If you are interested in E-Membership, you can check out www.kofc.org/joinus. With a few clicks of your mouse, you can become an E-Member. It might be an ideal situation for young college men or men that are just too busy to become involved. Of course, the intent is to eventually have you become a degreed active knight in a council. If you are ready to take the E-Membership step, I would ask you to consider becoming a Degreed Knight of Bishop Foley Council and really experience the fraternity of Foley brothers. But the choice is yours and the E-Membership option is available.

WELCOME NEW FOLEY KNIGHT!

Last Sunday, Bishop Foley Council welcomed its newest knight into our order. Ryan Mangulabnan became a 3rd Degree Foley Knight. Ryan is a 2016 graduate of Divine Child High School and a current Pre-med student at Wayne State University.

The major degree was held at Fr. Saylor Council in Allen Park. Ryan will work with his Brother Foley Knights to defend our Catholic faith and enjoy the fraternity and friendship the Knights of Columbus as we work together for our causes.

This piece of legislation would have banned abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, and called on Senators to “rethink” their stance on late-term abortions. Music Ministries The Academy of Sacred Music is presenting the St. Joseph Youth Choir Festival, to inspire and affirm children’s and youth choirs in our Archdiocese, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Monday, March 19. Choristers in third through eighth grades are invited for a day of clinics and rehearsals with Joe Balistreri, archdiocesan music direction, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will culminate in a Mass for the Solemnity of St. Joseph, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Bob Fisher at 2 p.m. Sacred music is an important part of the new evangelization. For info, call 313-277-3110. On Tuesday, Exposition is in the Church from 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM. Mother of Perpetual Help Novena - Tuesday at 7:00 PM. First Friday devotion prayers are from 3:00 - 4:00 PM in the Adoration Chapel. First Saturday devotions are at 7:45 AM. Anointing of the Sick Please call the Rectory Office to request this Sacrament. In emergency situations when the office is closed, the emergency line attendant will relay the information to one of our priests. Marriages Arrangements must be made at least six months in advance and couple must be active, registered members at a Catholic Church. Potential wedding date is not confirmed until couple meets with a Divine Child priest. Officiant at the ceremony will be a priest from Divine Child unless the couple has someone close to them who is a Catholic priest. Music for the liturgy must be coordinated with our Director of Music Ministry, Mr. Matthew Simpson. Funerals Arrangements are made in conjunction with the funeral home. Eulogies must be given at the funeral home or at the funeral luncheon; no eulogies at the funeral Mass, please. Memorial Masses are scheduled Monday-Friday only. Baptisms Baptisms may be requested on either the second or fourth Sunday of the month, pending approval. Arrangements must be made in advance and parents must attend a baptism class prior to the baptism. The Church requires that at least one of the parents and one of the godparents/sponsors be practicing Catholics; that is, they attend Mass each weekend.
