Lower Tier Project Office – Land of Opportunity! UNCLASSIFIED UNCLASSIFIEDSS 3286 (12) 5/20/2011 12:10 PM
Background• The US Patriot Launchers require improved
reliability
• Majority of US Launcher failures attributable to the 15KW generator
• Addressing generator failures has potential to:
– Improve Launcher and Fire Unit MTBF– Reduce fuel consumption, sparing items,
maintenance times and costs associated with generator repairs
Root Cause• Launcher draws significantly higher peak load
than steady state• The 15KW generator is sized for worst case
peak load with margin– Low power usage leads to wet stacking– Wet stacking results in increased generator
maintenance and eventually generator failure
LAUNCHER RELIABILITY
Addressing Generator Failures Offers Potential to Improve Launcher and Fire Unit RAM

Solution• Replace the 15KW generator with a 5KW generator• Add a Power Distribution Unit/Control Logic
Assembly (PDU/CLA)– Accepts power from 5KW generator, power grid or
alternate power sources (solar, wind, etc.)– Supplements the 5KW generator with batteries to
provide peak power
Hybrid designed for ease of maintenance• Anticipated 18 Fold Increase in MTBF• Incorporates prognostics• Generator, batteries and other BRUs fully
accessible• 5KW generator is hot swappable
– Batteries keep the Launcher electronics alive• Reduced fuel consumption
Hybrid designed for ease of retrofit• Forward and backward compatible• No modifications to the Launcher• Same mounting pattern as current 15KW
generator• Same Launcher interface cables as current 15KW
generator
Power Distribution Unit/Control Logic Assy. (PDU/CLA)(cover removed to show batteries)
5KW Generator
Ladder Frame(same mtg. pattern as 15KW Gen Set)
