LT,lJ'TE~ lJ'O lJ'!J{T, T,f[)1lJ'01( Dear Editor.

I wonder if students know that an organization exists for them to bring their problems to. An organization that makes proposals concerning student life, academics. and legislation benefiting students to the Board of Directors, the governing board for four·year and two·year colleges.

The Advisory Council of Students is such an organization. Senate Bill 420. which split the Board of Regents into two boards calls for three advisory councils; student. faculty. and staff. Each group elects a chairman who in tum is a voting member of the

Board of Directors. In other words, students have a voice at the state level!

The council consists of one student from each college's SGA. Monthly meetings are held in Charleston or at various campuses throughout the year.

Each student should know who his or her representative is on the Council. If you have a problem, make them aware of it. The Advisory Council of Students works for you. but we need your input.

Lisled below are the members of the Council and a schedule of our meetings. find your representative. and talk to them. Come 10 a meeting, see what we do, be involved! Remember. this is for you. Dear Editor One of the greatest areas 01

continual concern on this campus is the parking situation. Assuredly all students would like to have this concern alleviated. After having spoken with "the powers that be" about this concern upon many occasions and havin given them my proverbial two cents worth I

I would like to welcome the Alumni of Glenville Slate College on behalf of the student body. I want to assure you that we are still keeping alive all the great tradition which G S C grads have cherished over the years.

Despite the problems of diminishing populatioo. restricted budget, and reconstuction of higher education administrations. the high standard that Glenville State College has established for itself still remains. Even as students and faculty change. the following traditions continue.

G S C students and teachers still enjoy close relationships that have been here for such a long time. The sludents expect and even take pride in faculty support. Our present faculty is student·oriented with a concern for students' education. Our student·faculty ratio is ideal. and our students have the privilege of knowing their instructors. Our supportive staff continues to provide enriching experienee for students . intramural sports. drama. music. clubs. dances. and cultural programs.

The administration is serving the college's best interests as it did in the past President Simmons brought posjtive attention to G S C as Chancellor of the Board of Regents. He is saving the college much money since he is responsible for the drilling of several gas wells to heat our buildings. His plans for renovating. landscaping. and construction on campus have helped in making our school more efficient and attractive. Our maintenance staff still keeps G S C the cleanest college in W.Va.

Our traditional reputation as a top-noLCh teacher education program is known nation·wide. and we still continue to improve. Our graduating education majors are heavily recruited in surrounding areas by boards of education.

All Alumni can lake pride and feel secure with the knowledge that all good things we have cherished will continue. These reasons are what make G S C a unique institution for all who have auended.

On September 22, 1971, a centennial time capsule was drdicaIed ... sealed here m C3IIpUS as part of a long centennial r.elebration in honor of Glenville State College's one-hundreth year of operalion.

HART'S HEADLINES How far do sports authorities

have 10 go 10 rid athletics of steroid users'! Many of us feel that they can go too far. I am a finn believer in the banishment of steriod use for fair athletic competition, but I also feel that certain efforts are taken too far.

Despite efforts by the NFL Players Association to block saeroidrelaled suspensions, the National Football League announced last month that 13 players had been banned for at least 30 days because they tested positive for steroids, a performance-enhancing drug, in training camp. The league went on to explain that harsher first time suspensions for steroid users were enforced because of "the competitive edge that steroid users can obtain on the playing field."

The players' association claimed that the accuracy of the National Football League's testing procedures was "highly questionable," and asked U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan 10 issue a temporary restraining order stopping the league from executing such suspensions. However, Hogan denied the request, he believed players had more than enough warning of the penalty for testing positive 10 steroids.

I feel as if the National Football League's actions are necessary. Steroid use must not be IOlerated in sports, especially at the professional

level where players make their living. The actions the bgue takes should be positive though, not to blemish the game itself. These athletes are not drug addicts, and they should not be branded as felons. These players made a mistake and they are paying for iL

Some players use steroids to help heal an injury quicker. The steriod that builds speed and strength is an anabolic steriod, it is a perfonnance enhancer. Steroids can provide many advantages to a playt7 as far as providing him added strength and speed. Although as athletics enters into the 1990's, to take steroids is to take a chance.

As the college football season continues on, this season's Heisman Trophy Candidates are setting the stage for a wide-open race to college football's highest honor. Leading the way for this prestigious trophy is West Virginia's Major Harris. Harris, who is the highest returning candidate from last season, finishing fifth in last year's Heisman balloting. The Major has helped West Virginia win their last 15 regular season games. Other leading candidates are as follows: Tony Rice, Notre Dame~with him as a starter, Notre Dame is 16-1,} and Anthony Thompson, Indiana. Last year Anthony was third in the nation in rushing and second in touchdowns. Some other dark horse candidates are Tom Hodson, LSU; Blair

Last Week 6-4 Season 13-5

Thomas, Penn State; and Bill Musgrave,Oregon.

When West Virginia played Louisville last Saturday, not only were they lucky to win against a tough Cardinal team, they were lucky to getaway alive. Louisville beat the Mountaineers up pretty bad. The West Virginia offensive line just plain stunk. Major Harris had more Louisville players around him during the game than WVU players. Harris had no pass protection whatsoever. His stats weren't impressive, but it takes a talented quarterbock to take a beating like he did and stilllcad his team to victory. This Saturday the 4-0 Mountaineers again play another undefeated team, the Pittsburgh Panthers who are 3-0. Pittsburgh is fresh off of a 30-23 upset victory over the Syracuse Orangemen. Last week I predicted West Virginia to defeat Louisville 31-20, the Mountaineers won 30-21. This weekend the Mountaineers have the home field advantage over the Panthers. If they playa better

game offensively than at Louisville, they will win. The game will be won at the line. West Virginia's offensive line must hold off a talented Panther defensive line. The Mountaineers will have another tough game but the home crowd will cheer WVU to a 27 -24 victory over the Pitt Panthers.
