However, the Pioneers have won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two.• The last two meetings between the two teams have gone into overtime, with the Pioneers coming away victorious on both occasions. • Fairmont State’s last win in Glenville came in 2004, a 48-20 victory for the Falcons.• Head coach Mike Lopez is 1-4 against GSC. He has never beaten the Pioneers in Glenville.• Coach Lopez is 3-3 in games played on Thursday night since 2009. FSU lost last week against Clarion on a Thursday night. However, one of FSU’s three Thursday night wins came against Glenville, a wild 50-37 affair in Fairmont in 2009. • Fairmont State is looking to win its conference opener for the first time since 2005.

Clarion Postgame Notes• Quarterback Bobby Vega’s 321 yards passing vs. Clarion were the most by a quarterback in Lopez’s tenure as head coach. In fact, the 321 yards passing were the most by a Falcon quar-terback since Oct. 27, 2001, when Bryan Harman threw for 354 yards against Concord. • Fairmont State was shutout for just the second time under offensive coordinator Bryan Fisher last week against Clarion. The last time the Falcons were held scoreless under Fisher was a 24-0 loss to UNC Pembroke in 2010.• FSU’s 7-0 loss to Clarion marked the first time that Fairmont State has lost when holding a team to under nine points under head coach Mike Lopez.• Clarion snapped a two-game losing streak to Fairmont State with its win over the Falcons.• For the third-straight year, the team with the most total offense lost the game.• FSU advanced into Clarion territory on nine of its 10 possessions in the game. However, the Falcons were hurt by 11 penalties for 120 yards.• The Fairmont State defense held Clarion to just 291 yards and did so with just one tackle for a loss of yards and no sacks.• Daniel Strosnider’s interception was the second of his career. The first interception of his career came two seasons ago against Glenville State.• Fairmont State’s Johnny Dearstine handled the kicking duties for the Falcons against Clari-on. His kickoff went to the end zone where it was returned, and his 42-yard field goal attempt had plenty of distance but missed wide right.
Receiving Saint• FSU junior wide receiver Chris St. Hilaire, who had a strong sophomore season, picked up where he left off against Clarion.• St. Hilaire had a game-high eight catches and 108 yards against the Golden Eagles. Three of his eight catches picked up first downs for the Falcons.• The game against Clarion marked the third game of 100+ receiving yards for St. Hilaire in his career. • Last season, St. Hilaire had a career day against Glenville State snagging nine catches for 186 yards against the Pioneers. The 186 yards were the fourth-most by a FSU receiver at Du-vall-Rosier Field.• He has 13 career catches for 272 yards in two career games against Glenville State.• St. Hilaire now has 1,051 career receiving yards and is approaching the top 15 at FSU in career receiving yards (Khalid Dover is 15th with 1,466 yards).
Notable• The last time a Fairmont State quarterback threw for over 300 yards in consecutive games was in October of 2001 when Bryan Harman accomplished the feat against Shepherd (317) and West Liberty (332).• The Falcons are 16-2 when scoring 30 points or more under head coach Mike Lopez. The losses came last year against Glenville State and in 2008, a 41-38 loss at home to Seton Hill.• FSU is 0-1 this year when it has more turnovers than its opponent.• FSU is 8-11 in games decided by 10 points or less under head coach Mike Lopez.• The FSU defense has allowed only one individual to rush for over 100 yards against them in the last 12 games dating back to last season (Tommy Addison, Shepherd, 114 yards in 2011).
Scouting Glenville State• Glevnille State out-scored Carson-Newman 31-21 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the Pioneers dropped a 56-46 decision in its opener. • Rahmann Lee averaged 7.9 yards per carry in the season opener against C-N. Lee carried the ball 16 times for 126 yards and a touchdown.• Darold Hughes accounted for six touchdowns (five passing/one rushing) in the loss to the Eagles. Hughes also completed 31-of-51 passes for 305 yards.• Orlandus Harris caught 16 passes for 117 yards and a trio of touchdowns last week against Carson-Newman.• Robert Jiles (five catches for 72 yards) and Justin Feagin (six catches for 58 yards) also had an impact during Glenville’s week one loss.• Nate Ingersoll accounted for 10 total tackles last week against the Eagles.• James Johnson and James Washington both forced fumbles in last Thursday’s opener.• Davis Hutchison is in his second year as the head coach of the Pioneers football program, he went 5-6 in his first season at the helm. Last season, Hutchison’s squad defeated Fairmont State, 36-30, in triple overtime.

Sophomore Sensation• Daniel Monroe was on his way to a re-markable freshman season before an injury slowed him down late in the year.• Despite the injury, he still managed to rush for 999 yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games of action. He was named the WVIAC Fresh-man of the Year and was a second team All-WVIAC selection. • Monroe finished second in the league in rushing yards per game (99.0) and touch-downs (14), and third in scoring (8.4 points per game). • Monroe came to Fairmont State after spending a season redshirting at Florida State.• In the opener against Clarion, the Golden Eagles bottled up Monroe and held him to just 37 yards in the game. It was the second fewest yards with more than 15 carries in his career. (West Liberty held Monroe to 29 yards on 21 carries last year.)• Glenville State held Monroe to just 78 yards rushing last year, although he did find the end zone twice against the Pioneers last year.

Wilmer’s Career Bests
Something Special• Matt Wilmer put together a remarkable junior season as a return specialist for the Falcons.• Wilmer led the country in yards per punt return with 23.0. He was named Super Re-gion 1 Special Teams Player of the Year and second team All-America by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. He was a first team All-WVIAC selection and second team Daktron-ics All-Atlantic Region honoree.• Wilmer’s 530 punt return yards were the second most in a season in school history.• He returned 11 of the 23 punts he returned into the other team’s territory.• He also returned nine kicks for 316 yards (35.1 average).• In the opener against Clarion, Wilmer clear-ly had the attention of the Golden Eagles. Clarion’s five punts were angled away from Wilmer and went out of bounds.• Despite the attention, Wilmer still account-ed for three of Fairmont State’s five plays of 20 yards or more against Clarion (two recep-tions and one kick return).

Monroe’s Career Highs
Spreading The Wealth• Seven different players caught passes from quarterback Bobby Vega in the opener against Clarion.• Chris St. Hilaire had eight receptions (for 108 yards), followed by six catches from C.J. Goodwin (for 55 yards) and five from Mark Sampson (49 yards). • Matt Wilmer was targeted several times and finished with two catches for 56 yards.• 100 percent of the players catching touch-down passes last season return for 2012.
Injury Report • Fairmont State’s defense has been hit hard by several key injuries. • FSU suffered a big blow by losing Dewey McDonald to injury during a preseason scrimmage. McDonald, an All-America can-didate and NFL prospect, will likely redshirt the season and return to the Falcon lineup in 2013.• During the game against Clarion, McDon-ald’s replacement at the free safety position ,Leatis Jones, was shaken up and his status for Glenville State is doubtful.• Leading up to the Clarion game, star middle linebacker Garrett Davis suffered an injury to his pinkie finger and is questionable for the game against Glenville State. Davis was a first team All-WVIAC selection last year and led the team with 101 total tackles a sea-son ago. He had 19 tackles last year against Glenville State.
“Stew”• Fairmont State will be sporting “Stew” stickers on the helmet this year in honor of alum Bill Stewart who passed away earlier this year.• Stewart will also be inducted into the Fair-mont State Athletic Association Hall of Fame later this fall.• Stewart played for head coach Deacon Duvall in the early 1970s and was captain of the 1974 WVIAC championship team. He also got his coaching start as an assistant at Fair-mont State.
fightingfalcons.com Twitter: @fsufalcons
Preseason Notebook• Fairmont State will open the season with-out a player who has started a game at quar-terback at the NCAA Division II level. How-ever, the Falcons will rely on Bobby Vega, a junior college transfer who threw for nearly 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns last season at College of Dupage.• FSU lost its starting punter, place kicker, long snapper and holder from last year.• Fairmont State averaged 30 points per game last season -- the fifth highest season average in school history.• The Falcons return their leading rusher and scorer (Daniel Monroe), leading receiver (Chris St. Hilaire), leading tackler/TFL/sacks (Garrett Davis) and leading return man (Matt Wilmer). However, FSU lost several players “in the trenches.” The Falcons graduated two of its three starting defensive linemen, and two players on the offensive line. • Twelve different players recorded intercep-tions for the Falcons last season. Seven of those players return to the team this year.• Fairmont State has announced that it will join a new league, the Mountain East Con-ference, starting in 2013-14. The new twelve team league’s charter membership will in-clude: Concord University (W.Va.), Fairmont State University (W.Va.), Glenville State Col-lege (W.Va.), Notre Dame College (Ohio), Shepherd University (W.Va.), The University of Charleston (W.Va.), The University of Vir-ginia’s College at Wise (Va.), Urbana Univer-sity (Ohio), West Liberty University (W.Va.), West Virginia State University (W.Va.), Wheeling Jesuit University (W.Va.), and West Virginia Wesleyan College (W.Va.). • Former defensive end standout Luke Black was picked up as a free agent by the Cincin-nati Bengals and is competing for a spot on their roster.
2011 Season Review/Notes• Fairmont State posted a 7-4 overall record and went 4-4 in the WVIAC. The Falcons’ sev-en wins were the most in over a decade. Two of FSU’s four losses came by seven points or less.• Fairmont State boasted two first team Academic All-America selections in Dewey McDonald and Frank Keenan. It was the first time in program history that FSU had two players earn first team honors in the same season.• Daniel Monroe became the second Falcon player to be named WVIAC “Freshman of the Year” after ranking among the league lead-ers in rushing and scoring.• Fairmont State’s average of 30 points per game was the fifth-highest average in school history. The Falcons scored over 30 points seven times last year and went 6-1 in those games. (The lone loss was a 36-30 setback vs. Glenville State in overtime.)
• Eighteen players earned All-WVIAC honors including first team selections Chris Barfield (OL), Garrett Davis (LB) and Matt Wilmer (KR).• Fairmont State posted a 4-1 record away from Duvall-Rosier Field in 2011. The Falcons were also 3-0 against non-conference oppo-nents.• The stingy Falcon defense gave up just 97.3 yards per game and only allowed one individual to rush for over 100 yards against them in a game (Tommy Addison, Shepherd, 114 yards).• Fairmont State had one of the stingiest red zone defenses in 2011 allowing teams points on 67 percent of their trips inside the 20. Op-ponents scored touchdowns on 51 percent of their red zone opportunities.
FSU Picked Fifth• Fairmont State has been picked to finish fifth in the WVIAC in a vote of the league’s coaches.• Shepherd, which totaled six first-place nods and 76 points from the votes, was picked to win the league.• Defending WVIAC champion Concord, un-der the direction of WVIAC Coach of the Year Garin Justice, received the other three first place votes and 71 points, which was good enough for second place in the poll.

One of the big question marks for Fairmont State University’s football team coming into the 2012 season was the defense. Gone were starters Luke Black, Devin Johnson, Greg Underwood, David Pack and Raynell Hall among others. Then, would-be four-year starting free safety Dewey McDonald went down in the preseason with a broken arm and just this week starting mike linebacker and the team’s top tackler from last year Garrett Davis suffered a badly broken pinky finger and was ruled out of the season opener with Clarion by team orthopedic doctors. He’s be-ing evaluated on a week-to-week basis. Thus, the task appeared to be rather daunting for a Falcon defense littered with newcomers Thursday evening when it took the field for the first time this season against a Golden Eagle team which, in each of the two previous years, had rolled up well over 400 yards of total offense against FSU. Given the circumstances Fairmont’s de-fense performed admirably Thursday eve-ning. It held Clarion to just 291 yards of total offense, 16 first downs and one touchdown, but that score – a 27-yard scoring strike from Golden Eagle quarterback Ben Fiscus to a wide open Mark Nicholas midway through the third quarter – proved to be all Clarion would need as it toppled the Falcons 7-0. “Hats off to Clarion for doing what it had to do to get the win,” said FSU senior outside linebacker Daniel Strosnider, who finished with four tackles and an interception. “They found a way to get it done in a tough game.“If we’re looking at the past statistically we did a better job tonight than we have in the past against this offense. Unfortunately that didn’t result in a win for us. In all honestly tonight wasn’t a real clean performance for us in terms of defense. We’ve got a lot of things to clean up. FSU junior inside linebacker Ryan Watts, who played both the sam and mike line-backer spots for the Falcons in the game and finished with a pair of tackles, agrees. “We’re young in a lot of places and com-ing into this game we were kind of anxious to see how we’d fare in a true game situa-tion and in all honestly it wasn’t bad,” said Watts. “There were a couple of times when we had miscommunication and when we did they took advantage of it, especially on the touchdown. Give them credit. They played really well.
“As for us I think we’ve got a lot of good, young players who are only going to mature and get better with time. We just have to get back to work this week and try to get better before we head to Glenville.” Fairmont’s defense only allowed Clarion to execute three plays in the game which went for 20 or more yards.
Vega’s Debut Fairmont State new starting quarterback Bobby Vega, a junior college transfer, had a bit of a bittersweet debut Thursday evening against Clarion. Vega completed 27-of-47 passes for 321 yards, but he was intercepted twice and couldn’t quite push the Falcons into the end zone against the Golden Eagles. Once I got my first-game jitters out I didn’t feel bad. I felt good and comfortable with the play calls. Coach (Bryan) Fisher and I communicated pretty well about the play calls – what we liked and didn’t like. It just came down to the fact that they made one more play than we did. “I’ll say this, we didn’t get the ball in the end zone and I’ll take the blame for that. You’ve got to be able to score when you have the football in situations like we did tonight. But I loved the fact that our guys competed right until the very end. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”
Spreading the Wealth FSU junior receivers Chris St. Hilaire and Mark Sampson have proven throughout their careers they can be counted on to make plays when given the opportunity. St. Hilaire, the team’s leading receiver a year ago, fin-ished Thursday’s contest with a game-high eight receptions for a game-high 108 yards. It was his third career game surpassing the century mark in receiving yards. Sampson, on the other hand, finished with five catches for 49 yards.Late in the game, though, a third and much-needed threat at receiver for Fairmont State emerged in the form of newcomer C.J. Good-win. The athletically gifted 6-3, 190-pound ju-nior, who only played one year of high school football at Linsly in Wheeling, was found playing intramural basketball this off season by Falcon defensive coordinator Shahram Shafii.
Against Clarion in his FSU debut, Good-win caught six passes for 55 yards. He had three receptions for 26 yards on the Falcons’ final drive of the game which went from the Fairmont 20 to the Clarion eight before stall-ing due to penalties. “The last drive for us, I think, was men-tal,” said Goodwin. “We made a lot of men-tal mistakes and they ended up costing us. We just have to get better. I really believe we have the potential to have a heckuva team. I believe in us and I think we all believe in each other. “As for me I’m very happy to be here and have this opportunity and I want to do my best to make the most of it. Coach Shafii found me on the basketball court playing basketball. He asked me if I wanted to try out for football and play DB (defensive back) for him. I wasn’t any good at DB so they moved me over to receiver and I feel a lot more com-fortable there. I’m just trying to get better and improve every day.”

Last Year vs. Glenville StateGlenville State 36, Fairmont State 30 (3Ot)September 17, 2011 | Fairmont, W.Va.FAIRMONT W.Va. -- Glenville State needed three overtimes to defeat Fair-mont State, 36-30, in a thrilling WVIAC battle at Duvall-Rosier Field. Glenville State was able to hold FSU to 92 yards on the ground in the victory. The Pioneers out-gained the Falcons 431-384 for the game. Glenville State also won the turnover battle forcing three FSU turnovers while giving up only two. Logan Moore was 17-of-28 for 292 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Chris St. Hilaire had nine catches for a career-high 186 yards and a touchdown. Daniel Monroe was limited to 83 yards on 26 carries on the afternoon but had two touchdowns. Darold Hughes was 30-of-50 for 284 yards and a touchdown on the afternoon. Jordan Griffin was on the receiving end of 10 of those passes for 109 yards. On the ground, Joe Mesadieu had 22 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown, and Kareem Alexander added 53 yards on 16 carries and added two scores for the Pioneers. Defensively the Falcons where led by Garrett Davis who had 18 total tackles (nine solo) and forced one fumble. Greg Underwood also had a big day with 16 tackles (10 solo). David Pack added seven tackles with a fumble recovery and Devin Johnson came up with seven tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. The Pioneers were led defensively by Nate Ingersoll with 10 tackles, Matty Porter with seven and Donald Marshall with six. Glenville’s Matt Parker also the lone interception in the game and Terry Reese recovered the game-winning fumble in the third overtime session. Fairmont State jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half after a 30-yard field goal from Frank Keenan and a 49-yard touchdown pass from Moore to St. Hilaire. The Pioneers broke through just before halftime, though, when Hughes found Mario Wright in the back of the end zone from four yards out to make it 10-7 at the break. The Pioneers took the lead on Alexander’s 10-yard run in the third quar-ter, and then made it 21-10 early in the fourth quarter on another Mesadieu touchdown. The Falcons made a furious rally, though, with a pair of rushing TDs from Monroe to put FSU ahead late, 24-21. GSC kicker Eddie McKay connected from 30 yards out with just five ticks remaining to send the game in over-time. The teams traded field goals in the first two overtime sessions, and in the third overtime, Glenville finally pushed the ball across the goal line as Alexander did the honors. The mandatory two-point try failed to make it 36-30. On FSU’s first play, though, Monroe was popped by Ricky Booker and fumbled, and Reese came up with the ball to end the game.

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Glenville State’s Colston Bayless kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime to defeat Fairmont State, 17-14, at Ike Morris Stadium. Fairmont State held a 14-0 lead at the break but the Pioneers tied the game in the fourth quarter and forced overtime. The Pioneers kicked a field goal in their possession in overtime, and then on third down, FSU’s Logan Moore’s pass was intended for Perry Baker but the ball was knocked into the air and then intercepted into the end zone which ended the game. Glenville State had 440 yards of total offense including 216 on the ground. FSU managed just 257 yards of total offense. GSC owned the ball for nearly 39 minutes of the game. The Pioneers seemingly controlled the first quarter, but FSU’s defense refused to give and kept Glenville State off the board. FSU then put together an impressive drive at the end of the first quarter, capped by a Scott Victorio 2-yard plunge. The score remained the same late in the second quarter, but Glenville State was driving late, but Darold Huges’ pass was intercepted in the end zone by Dewey McDonald, who returned it 31 yards. That led to another Falcon scoring drive, this time taken in by Logan Moore on a quarterback keeper from five yards out as FSU took a 14-0 lead into the break. Fairmont State got the ball to open the third quarter, but lost its first fumble of the season on its second play of the half. That led promptly to a Glenville State touchdown as Wes Hanson hauled in a Huges pass from five yards out to cut the Falcon lead in half. FSU hung on to the lead into the fourth quarter, again thwarting a scor-ing attempt by Glenville State as Daniel Strosnider picked off a pass inside the 20-yard line. But the Pioneers finally drew even when Kareem Alexander went in from 1-yard out midway through the fourth and made it 14-14. Fairmont State had a chance to take lead on its ensuing possession, but Frank Keenan’s 39-yard attempt just missed to the left. Glenville State was driving to try and take the lead, but Strosnider forced a 21-yard loss on third down that took the Pioneers out of scoring position and punt. Zack Page, who tied the NCAA Division II record for career kick returns, returned the punt all the way back to the GSC 26-yard line, but it was called back on a penalty. The Falcons then were content to take the game into overtime.

CLARION, Pa. -- Clarion’s Ben Fiscus connected with Mark Nicholas on a 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and the Golden Eagle defense pitched a shutout to defeat Fairmont State, 7-0, in the season-opener at Me-morial Stadium. Fiscus had an efficient night going 14-of-21 for 136 yards and a touchdown passing and added 77 yards on the ground to pace the Golden Eagle offense. Bobby Thomas added 80 yards on the ground for Clarion. Fairmont State quarterback Bobby Vega had a solid first outing in a Fal-con uniform connecting on 27-of-47 passes for 321 yards. He was intercepted twice. His favorite targets were Chris St. Hilaire who had eight catches for 108 yards and C.J. Goodwin who added six grabs for 55 yards. Clarion’s defense was led by Andrew Paronish who had six tackles, a fum-ble recovery, and a fourth quarter interception he returned for 27 yards. Fairmont State’s defense was paced by Scott Davidson who had eight to-tal tackles and Daniel Strosnider who had four tackles and interception. The Falcons held the edge in total offense, 355-291, but were penalized 11 times for 120 yards in the game. Clarion was flagged seven times for 95 yards. The Golden Eagles stifled the Fairmont State running game holding the Fal-cons to just 34 yards on 30 carries in the game. Neither team made it into the red zone until the third quarter when FSU got to the Clarion 17 on its initial drive of the half. However, a penalty and a sack stalled the drive and the Falcons had to settle for a punt. The Golden Eagles countered on the ensuing drive marching 84 yards down for the score as Fiscus found Nicholas in tight coverage on a 27-yard score. Clarion looked to put the game away late in the fourth quarter as it lined up for a field goal, but Scott Davidson came off the edge and blocked the at-tempt to give FSU one last chance on offense. The Falcons worked the way down to the Clarion 8-yard line, but were moved back on a holding play to the 15. Facing third-and-goal, Vega’s pass to St. Hilaire was low and incomplete. With just 22 seconds left, Vega heaved an attempt in the back of the end zone where the pass was batted down by Clarion’s Jason Peterson to preserve the victory for the Golden Eagles.

Bobby Vega: Ready For The Chance (published Aug. 20)
When Bobby Vega wrapped up his junior college football career at the College of Du-Page in Glen Ellyn, Ill., all he wanted was the opportunity to go to a four-year school and compete for a starting job. Vega, a 6-2, 210 junior quarterback, got his wish when Fairmont State University came calling. The Falcons already had two-year starter Logan Moore in the fold when Vega enrolled at FSU in January, but Fairmont’s coaching staff was adamant about adding quality depth to a crucial position on their roster. Vega was coming off his sophomore and fi-nal season at the College of DuPage where he completed 157 of 264 passes (59.4 per-cent) for 1,987 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was intercepted 10 times. “You go back to our season last year when Logan got hurt against Bowie State here, it changed the whole course of our season,” said FSU head coach Mike Lopez. “I promised the staff that I’d never let that happen again.” Vega wasted little time turning heads in spring drills with his live arm and leader-ship qualities. Moore and Vega engaged in a friendly, but competitive battle for the top spot in FSU’s offense which culminated in the annual FSU Maroon-White Spring Game.
In that contest Vega connected on 12-of-24 passes for 196 yards and one TD. The stage appeared to be set for a good battle for the starting job between the two in August, but Moore opted to enroll at West Virginia University, leaving the job to Vega. Despite losing Moore, the Falcons still solved their issue with depth at the position adding Tyler Pate from Hurricane, W.Va., and Bran-don Ashenfelter from Martinsburg, W.Va. “First and foremost I think I’ve been blessed with the opportunity that I’ve been given here at Fairmont State,” said Vega. “Unfortunately Logan left here and I have nothing but best wishes for him. He was definitely a big part of this program and this offense. I believe we both could have been used in the right way here to help this team. “I came here just wanting to compete for a job. I didn’t ask for anything but a chance and I got that chance and now it’s up to me to make the most of it. I’m in the so-called driver’s seat to run this offense and it’s up to me to get the job done.” The good news for Vega, who starred in high school in Florida at Miami’s Felix Varela Senior High, is that he’ll be surrounded this fall by a plethora of returning starters includ-ing WVIAC Offensive Freshman of the Year running back Daniel Monroe, receivers Chris
By Duane Cochran for FightingFalcons.com
St. Hilaire, Mark Sampson and Matt Wilmer, tight end Sean Marion and first-team all-league tackle Chris Barfield to name a few. “I feel like we’re going to be solid on of-fense,” said Vega. “We have some depth now on the offensive line. The coaches recruited very well in that area. I also think we have great wide receivers in St. Hilaire, Wilmer, Sampson and some young guys who are talented. Then we have Monroe, who before he got hurt last year was having a great sea-son. “We have talent. It just has to all come together. Right now we really need to work on building team chemistry. That’s a big part of success.” Vega returned to Fairmont from Miami in mid-summer and began preparing him-self to run the offense. “As soon as I got back I called some of the guys who were here to get together and throw some to keep my arm loose and in shape,” he said. “I also wanted to work on timing with them. I also watched film a lot. I didn’t have a lot on myself. I watched the spring game quite a few times and I’ve tried to correct my mistakes. I’m a player who be-lieves you can always learn and you can al-ways improve. I feel like I’ve put my work in. Now let’s see if it pays off.” Lopez is one individual who believes it will. “Bobby’s a great kid who has been very mature from day one here,” said Lopez. “Bob-by is our guy. I’m comfortable saying that. He has a great work ethic and very good lead-ership skills. He’s cool and calm and he pos-sesses a big arm and good feet. I think he’s a good fit for our offense and I’ll say this – I sleep very well at night knowing he’s going to be the guy running our offense.”

Scott Davidson: Finding The Phantom (published Aug. 23)
Like an onion, there’s a lot of layers to Fair-mont State University senior football player Scott Davidson. There’s Scott Davidson the double major in communications and graphic technology who is a member of the Dean’s List. There’s Scott Davidson the two-month intern at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Fairmont who has been No. 1 in home city sales in each of the two months he’s been there. There’s Scott Davidson the student of the game, master technician and a leader of the FSU secondary from his cornerback posi-tion. And there’s Scott Davidson the “Phan-tom,” a self-proclaimed moniker he gave himself in high school to best describe his on-field persona. “The guy is sneaky good,” said FSU re-ceiver Chris St. Hilaire. “He’s very good at disguising what he’s going to do. You may think he’s going to do one thing and he’ll do the complete opposite. He’s also great at reading receivers and routes. He’ll recognize if a receiver is going to break down and cut off the route or if he’s going to make a move and go deep. “He’s a very intelligent player who has good feet and his technique is the best. If I’m running an out he’s right on my hip. If I run a comeback he’s right behind me. If I go deep he’s still right on my hip. The guy is always where he’s supposed to be. I think he’s one of the best corners in our league.” Since he first arrived on Fairmont State’s campus three years ago Davidson, who did not redshirt out of Columbus, Ohio’s East-moor Academy, has taken a very mature and business-like approach to the way he does pretty much everything in his life. “My dad wasn’t in my life growing up,” he said. “My mother, Deborah, raised my sis-ter Donna and I. She’s the strongest person I know. She can handle pretty much anything. I think I’ve seen her cry maybe once in my life. I draw a lot of my strength as a person from her. I respect her so much and know I can always turn to her if I need anything. “I think because of my situation I had to mature a lot faster than maybe most males do. The closest thing I had to a father fig-ure growing up was one of my high school coaches, James Miranda, who is a great guy that I still talk to from time to time. He had a real positive influence on me.” Once he was in Fairmont’s camp in the fall of 2009, it didn’t take the Falcon coaches long to recognize Davidson’s potential.
“The one thing I know for certain about Scotty Davidson is from the first day he ar-rived here at Fairmont he’s always separated himself both on and off the field as a leader and as a mature adult,” said FSU defensive coordinator Shahram Shafii. “He’s always as-pired to be great. Athletically there’s times he may not have the same skill set as people who line up beside him or across from him, but technique-wise he’s phenomenal. He’s one of the hardest workers we have. “You tell me he had success working at Enterprise, well, it wouldn’t surprise me at the end of the day if he owned Enterprise,” Shafii continued. “That’s the type of kid he is. I love him. He’s great at teaching and work-ing with our young guys and having him on the field makes me, as a coach, a lot more comfortable.” Davidson heads into his senior season with 60 total tackles, 43 of which are solo stops. He also has three career interceptions and eight pass breakups. “I can hardly believe it’s my senior sea-son already,” said Davidson. “I’m looking for good things from both myself and our team this year.

“I’ve had a great three years here and am looking forward to a fourth. I’m going to miss a lot of things about here – my team-mates and the coaching staff. I’ve learned so much. The coaches have been great. They make you laugh and they make you cry, but at the end of the day they teach you some-thing about football and life and I’ve tried to learn and apply as much of what I’ve been taught as possible.” And as for his “Phantom” persona? “In life you have to have a couple of dif-ferent personas,” said Davidson with a laugh. “You can’t just be you all of the time. Off the field I’m definitely Scott Davidson. I’m a fun guy who is easy to get along with. On the field I’m more business-like. When you play this game you’ve got to have a certain confi-dence or swagger. Hence the phantom. “At first in high school the guys used to call me Master Lock. That was nice but I couldn’t get anywhere with that. I tried to play it in my head and it just went no where. We had this thing in high school called super hero day and I told everyone I was going to come as the Phantom. They were like ‘What, no way.’ I dressed up in all black tights with black shoes, a cape and a mask and called myself the Phantom. From that point on it stuck and I ran with it. I tried to do different things on the field which would make me seem like a phantom. I remember quarter-backs telling me a lot that it seemed like I came out of no where. I liked that.” Davidson will graduate in May with two degrees from FSU. In the future he says he wouldn’t mind parlaying his internship at Enterprise into a full-time position. “Hopefully after I graduate and pass my skills and grills test with Enterprise they’ll hire me as a full-time management assis-tant,” said Davidson. “After that I can pretty much go wherever there’s an opening. “I kind of have a knack for public rela-tions, marketing, sales and things like that. In sales you have to have a strategy. It’s just like football. Every game isn’t the same and every customer isn’t the same. I like it there (at Enterprise) because it’s not a scam. Every-thing is real, down to earth and legit. You ex-plain everything up front and you don’t have to worry about people coming back and say-ing I didn’t know this or that. “I’m ready for life and ready to get things started. I’ve pretty much had my life planned out since I was about 15. I know where I want to be and what steps I have to take to get there.”
