DeNISe’S RANT

We are so excited to introduce the newest mem-ber of the Running Zone family! On November 28th, (the day AFTER the marathon) we are adopting an 8 week old long haired miniature dachshund, cream col-ored. We have not named HER yet as we don’t know her personality yet. It has been almost 2 years since we lost Willy and are ready to put our newest addition to work! You will see her at Running Zone as she will accompany us every day! She will be ready to greet you with puppy kisses! She may not be ready for Thursday night pizza but I’m sure she will eventually! It doesn’t look like she will be walking around much

for awhile as none of us will want to put her down! We welcome any name suggestions to our Running Zone facebook! And come in to meet her anytime!!

the new shop dog is almost here!

Many of those who participated in the Ghostly Gecko 5K on Oct. 22 earned more than a treat-filled goodie bag at the finish line. New course records were set and scores of athletes crossed the finish line with huge smiles as they realized they had just run or walked their personal best 3.1-mile time. West Mel-bourne’s Michael Fisher raised his arms in triumph as he clocked the race victory and a new personal best of sixteen minutes and fourteen seconds. The 19-year-old Brevard Com-munity College freshman was later surprised to learn that he had also broken the previous course record of 16:24. “I didn’t know what the course record was,” said Fisher, who began running just three years ago. “I knew I wanted to finish near the top to get good points for the Series.” The race was the third in the seven-race Running Zone Founda-tion Race Series. A $10,000 prize purse – one of Florida’s largest – is up for grabs for those earning the most points in the top three overall and age group spots by the end of the season. Fisher, who led the Series com-ing into the race, ran close to last year’s Series champ, 34-year-old Peter Clusener, through much of the race. “It was a bit windy so I tried sticking near him to block the wind,” Fisher said. “I hung on until close to the three-mile mark and then went hard to the finish.” Melbourne’s Clusener, who

competed in the 1994 U.S. Olym-pic Men’s Marathon trials, placed second overall in 16:31. Trailing about 30 seconds behind the two leaders was the tightly clustered chase pack of John Davis, Angela Cobb, Rob Abel, Doug Butler, Steve Hedgespeth and

Matt Horner working together against the gusty north headwinds. The turn-around just after the two-mile timing mat marked the end of the headwind and the beginning of the rest of the race for the pack.

West Melbourne’s John Davis, a previous two-time Series winner and president of Rapid Automation Designs, Inc., broke free from the thundering posse, building a six second lead, to take third overall in 17:01. Melbourne’s Doug Butler finished fourth overall in 17:07 to take the Masters win and set a new 40+-year-old course record. “The wind out of the north was tough, so I sat behind John, Ron and Steve,” said the 48-year-old grand-father who coaches the Set Goals, Not Limits running camp and multi-year state champion runners at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. “Com-ing back south I felt pretty good and just hung with John, Angela and Steve. Angela was in front of me with 200 (yards) to go. I had to let my male pride take charge and go get her. She had a super race which helped me run the race I did.” A “super race” may have been an understatement. After winning the I Run for

Pizza Football Kickoff 5K in 17:49, Cobb said she was working toward whittling her time down towards her personal best of 17:24. Apparently she used a chainsaw. The surfer and former Georgia runner annihilated her old PR as she crossed the finish line in 17:08 – tak-ing the overall women’s win and set-ting a new female course record. Her time was also good enough for fifth overall in the field of 800 finishers. “I did not expect that at all,” said Cobb, who began running again months after giving birth to her daughter, Savannah, in March 2010. “I was trying to run a 17:30.” “I was in a strong pack and didn’t wear a watch,” she said. “We got to the first mile split and I felt good with holding the pace and staying with the group. At mile two, I still felt good and told myself to hold on. When I finished I thought ‘wow, that went by fast, maybe I could have gone faster’.” Cobb credited her jump in fitness to consistent training and the festive atmosphere of the race. “I started training seriously again

a few months ago,” said Cobb, whose win also gave her the Series lead. “It takes a while to get back to peak performance.” “There was also lots of good energy at the race. Everyone was dressed up and excited. It was fun with everyone in a festive mood. It was exciting.” After taking the overall win at the Orlando Women’s Triathlon earlier in the day, Satellite Beaches Jes-sica Crate placed second to training partner, Cobb, and ninth overall. The 26-year-old former two-time Series champ hit the line in 17:48. Cocoa Beaches Beth Whalen, 25, took third female and eleventh overall in 17:56. Satellite Beaches Cathy Friedel scored the Masters win in 20:21. The 47-year-old mother of five had taken second Masters just six days prior at the Atlantic Coast Half-Ironman race near Amelia Island. Part of the fun and excitement of the Ghostly Gecko 5K is not knowing who or maybe what you’ll bump into. Scores of athletes and spectators - from tiny tot to septuagenarians - were clothed in creative costumes. The post-race party at Squid Lips offered a festive Halloween scene as werewolves, princesses and witches chomped on wings and drank bubbly beverages while waiting for the awards. Those with the fastest times were not the only winners. Many in costume lined up for the hoots and applause of the crowd who judged their creativity in the

Best Costume Contest. In the end, it was the New York sidewalk lunch of Mark, Lisa and Cooper Petrillo who received top honors. The Indialantic couple was dressed as ketch-up and mustard while their very patient Weimaraner, Cooper, played the roll of a hotdog instead of eating one. Everyone loves love so it was no surprise to see Cupid take second place. The Indialantic man carrying the bow and arrow is known as Neal Weintraub at

his day job. Since the crowd had come with the primary purpose of racing, it made sense that Forrest Gump was also one of the winners. Vero Beaches Jim Van Veen and his run-across-the-country beard growth took third. Satellite Beaches Mary June Joseph was the winner of the free hotel and pair of tickets at Universal Studio’s Hallow-een Horror Nights and Nancy Wingo, from Rockledge, won a free pair of shoes from Running Zone. We hope you enjoy these winners’ photos as well as some random shots taken of other costumed creatures! There are also tons of free-to-download photos of all participants available at http://www.runningzone.com/event_results.

Michael Fisher, the current Running Zone Foundation Race Series points’ leader, has really picked up the pace during the past two years. Consider that in 2009, the now 19-year-old Brevard Community College freshman finished the Harris Family Medical Center 5K in 18:42 for tenth overall. On Oct 22, Fisher set a course record with his Ghostly Gecko 5K victory of 16:14. Prior to the 2009 event, Fisher had run only two other races – the 2007 (21:36) and 2008 (20:16) Harris 5K. Incredibly, his train-ing for those races consisted of “a little light running the week before” each one. In 2009, Fisher – just like every other athlete who has ever crossed a running finish line - wondered just how fast he could go if he actually trained for the 5K. “My mom called Jackie Clifton (Run-ning Zone Race Team member and running coach) to see if she could offer some advice,” Fisher said. “(Clifton) asked if she could come to our house to run with us and give us some suggestions. She talked with me about my running and told me she thought I had some real potential. I was excited after she left to try out some of the things she sug-

gested to see how well I could do.” After just one month of putting Clifton’s

advice into practice, Fisher’s 2009 Harris 5K time plummeted to 18:42, good enough for third in his age group and tenth overall. “Basically, I got motivated to run when Mrs. Clifton came over to talk with us, and I haven’t stopped since, said Fisher. “She encouraged me to do Doug Butler’s summer camp, which I did, and I started conditioning with the Brevard Heat that summer as well.” Brevard Heat, a member of Florida High School Athletic Association, is one of two programs in the state that offers competitive high school sports opportunities to those who are homeschooled. “The team just felt like a good fit,” said Fisher, who was homeschooled until he be-gan college. “I enjoyed working with (coach) John Davis.” Under the tutelage of Davis and en-joying the camaraderie of his teammates, Fisher’s 5K race times steadily and consis-tently dropped from the high 18-somethings to 17-somethings to his latest 16:14. “Michael not only has an incredible work ethic, but he has the rare ability to hit every workout exactly at the goal pace I give

The Brooks PureProject™ collection intro-duces a unique way to experience your run by promoting a natural stride in an incred-ibly lightweight shoe. Knowing that simply removing parts of the shoe would result in poor performance, Brooks took a proac-tive approach to biomechanical needs by developing five innovative technologies that engage the foot naturally, and with significantly fewer parts than a standard shoe. Breathable fabrics, radically flexible materials, and an extremely low profile complete the package to bring you a run for the senses. It’s what they call the “Feel More with Less” experience.

PureConnectFeel the run from head to big toe with the radically light-weight and flex-ible PureCon-nect. Neutral runners who crave less shoe and more free-dom will love

the maximum breathability of an open mesh upper built on a slim and nimble underfoot. A split toe groove extends through the forefoot allowing the runner to really engage the foot and get a greater sense of connection to the ground. This is a shoe for those who want as little as possible between them and the road.

PureFlowNeutral to Guidance runners can experi-ence a run for the senses without losing the comfort of dynamic cushioning. The PureFlow brings a little more shoe and a whole lot of technology to a slick aesthetic. With a wider Nav Band coming up the lateral side and grabbing the midsole, the foot receives arch support without the bulki-ness of underfoot materials. him,” said Davis. “Most runners tend to either take the workouts too easy or too hard and in either case, they don’t achieve the maximum benefit.” “But the most amazing thing about Mi-chael is that his potential is a complete un-known since he has only been running for a few short years. If put in a running program for a few years with other elite runners, the sky is the limit.” While Fisher is looking into the engi-neering and architecture programs at some of the colleges with powerhouse running programs, it is his love of the sport – not the fast times and awards – that keep him motivated. “I really look forward to my workouts and my runs are typically the best part of my day,” Fisher said. “It’s something I really enjoy and I’d do it even if my times weren’t improving. The fact that I see my times get-ting faster with hard work is just icing on the cake.”

There are some scary statistics out there and we’re not talking about numbers dressed up in Halloween costumes. According to the U.S. Center for Dis-ease Control, 10 to 15 percent of the kids in the state of Florida are obese. Not chubby, not pleasingly plump, but obese. Add on another 15-20 percent who are ‘merely’ over-weight, and it’s not hard to see a health care crisis in the making. For several years now, it has been proven that kids who are overweight are more likely to have:n High blood pressure and high cholesterol that increases the risk for heart disease.n Increased risk of impaired glucose toler-ance, insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.n Breathing problems such as sleep apnea and asthma.n Joint problems and musculoskeletal dis-comfort.n Fatty liver disease, gallstones and heart-burn.n Greater risk of social and psychological problems, such as discrimination and poor self-esteem.n Early onset puberty, which brings a whole new set of emotional and physical issues into play for kids as young as seven-years-old these days. As it does for adults, eating healthy and

getting plenty of exercise goes a long way toward keeping our kids healthy. While it is probably no longer safe just to let kids roam around outdoors for hours alone, there are plenty of organized op-portunities for kids and parents to be active together. Below is an interview with Melbourne’s Erin Schuck and her seven-year-old son, Colin. They show how parents who use local opportunities to model a healthy lifestyle early on in their child’s life can have a huge

impact on whether their child willingly chooses the fun of fitness over video games on the couch.RZ: I remember like it was yesterday you pushing Colin in the baby-jogger during the Thursday night fun runs. What were you

since i’m changing my technique, will my muscles be sore?

You will very likely experience some soreness. Chances are you have been under-working

to reassess your mechanics.

how long does it take to master Gfr?

Every individual is unique. If you run every day or if you are naturally in-tune with your body,

changes can come within a few days. For some it takes six months, even a year. “Mastering”

changes can come within a few days. For some it takes six months, even a year. “Mastering”

GFR requires practice, reassessment, and more practice.

Running faster, more effficiently,

and injury free is what runners

strive for. With a focus on proper

mechanics, Good form runninG aims to help runners of all ages

and abilities achieve these goals.

> Experienced coaches

> Individualized film review

> Instruction on the "4 points" of GFR

> Informative handout with visual

examples of key GFR topics.

as a participant in the Gfr clinics you will recieve:

are you sure that Gfr will work for me?

Yes. GFR has had an incredibly positive response and success rate. We believe the reason for

that is the fact that GFR simply encourages you to move your body the way it was designed.

since i’m changing my technique, will my muscles be sore?

You will very likely experience some soreness. Chances are you have been under-working

some of the key running muscles. However if the soreness persists past a few runs, you need

to reassess your mechanics.

If you ever forget the joy of these adventurous activities, just come watch the pirate-themed Salty Dog Kids’ Duathlon that takes place each October for kids ages six to 12. You’ll get your stoke back as you see how hard each child tries and how joyful they are at the finish line. “The Salty Dog kind of grew out of Health First Health Plans wanting to add a children’s event the day before the triathlon (Battle of the Bridges pre-sented by Health First Health Plans),” said Denise Piercy, race director for the Running Zone Foundation event. “They

wanted us to produce it to make it a part of a family weekend.” At this year’s race on Oct. 1, itty-bitty Barbie bikes were racked next to hand-me-down ten-speeds as more than 60 kids got ready to start the first run of their wave in the run-bike-run event. Those six to nine-year-olds zoomed through 400 meters, peddled a furious two miles and then topped in off with an 800-meter trot. Their older siblings and friends ages 10 through 12 did twice the distance. In the six-to-nine wave, Melbourne

hoping to achieve with that?ES: On (Colin’s) first birthday we invested in a BOB stroller from Running Zone. I needed to run for many reasons – stress, health, so-cializing – but what I realized was that it was so I could spend quality time with my son! It was the one thing that we did together and I believe we both looked forward to our miles on the road. We ran at Running Zone every Thurs-day night for years, at one point he got too heavy to push through the trails and he loved running on that stretch of sand. In addition, I would take him in the stroller with me to Coach Butler’s running camp. I can’t count how many times we ran around the BCC parking lot!RZ: How do you think Colin gaining an early interest in being active has helped him?ES: Now that he is older and out of the stroller, I see that he has always been a very active young boy. He has never been one to veg on the couch. He has always preferred to be shooting hoops, throwing the football or racing around the neighborhood on his bike. He has an interest in running, and I hope that

it us because we have exposed him to the sport at a young age. As far as I remember, Colin has done nine races in a stroller and seven solo including two duathlons. We are proud to say that we have given Colin many opportunities to be active, but that is not hard to do in Brevard County. There are numerous opportunities from rec-reation leagues to school clubs. Many local 5K races also offer Kiddie Fun Runs at their conclusion and most of them are free. These are great opportunities for kids to race across the finish line and, hopefully, catch the bug. With these free kids’ races and now the free child care at the Running Zone Foundation Race Series events, it really is a win-win for the parents who ran the run and then want their little kids to race as well.RZ: Colin, how long have you been running and what do you like about doing so?CS: I have been running for three years. I like to run and race my friends on the play-ground at school. I also like to do the short Running Zone races and get medals.RZ: Tell us about some of the races, kids’ runs and/or fun runs you really love and why?

CS: The Salty Dog Duathlon is my favorite race. I liked it better this year because I got a new, faster bike. I liked the Stingray and Rhino races at the Zoo. I like to race at the zoo because it is a short race (3k or 1.8 miles) and I do not get so tired. I like going to the Running Zone fun runs on Thursdays so I can eat pizza and give out prizes.RZ: You did really well in the Salty Dog Duathlon. What did you do to prepare for it?CS: Not much, but I do run a lot at soc-cer practice and I race my bike around the neighborhood. I did go to the (duathlon) clinic with coaches Suzie (Enlow) and Linda (Cowart) and I’m glad I did! At the practice I stopped too fast on my bike and flipped over. I laughed and learned that I can’t brake that fast.RZ: What do you like better: just running or running and biking together?CS: Definitely both together.RZ:Why?CS: Because I get a break from running when I get to ride my bike.

PureCadenceLean construction fuses with a responsive fit in the PureCadence. For Guidance to Sup-port runners, this shoe delivers more support through smart, streamlined features such as a wider Nav Band that’s locked in to the medial strike pod. A rein-forced heel counter secures the foot and the internal PDRB helps prevent overpronation. The PureCadence gives runners who need more stability the chance to experience the feel of a natural foot strike with a lightweight, breathable shoe.

PureGritFree your feet and embrace the trail with the PureGrit. Working with Scott Jurek, we developed a unique one-piece

A sleek grip lug pattern and wide base protect the feet but still allow the runner to get in touch with the ground. Top it off with an ultralight mesh and conforming foam upper for a fit that really hugs the foot.

During the heavy heat of summer, scores of local athletes train to participate in one of the many fall or winter races beyond our county line. Below we pro-vide a thumbnail of some of October’s events and congratulate all of Brevard’s amazing participants!

Daytona beach half Marathon finishers, (13.1 miles), oct. 30Can you say windy? Although the race started with a lap around the weather-protected Daytona International Speed-way, runners were soon exposed to the elements as the out-and-back course headed toward the Atlantic. Athletes had to fight 15-20 mile-per-hour north, northeast winds and higher gusts as they fought their way over and back across the Halifax River Bridge. In spite of the gusty punches, race highlights includeda new PR for Kelley Semenko; age group wins for Matt Ma-honey and Lisa Petrillo - with Lisa also winning some bubbly and a pair of shoes and third-place finish for Melbourne’s Doug Nichols in the 45-49 age group and Titusville’s Marty Winkle in the 65-69 division. (26.2 miles), oct. 30Mingling with 30,000 fellow athletes from 54 countries to race in the nation’s capitol is exciting enough, but add snow flurries the day before the event and the intensity level becomes exponential if you’re from Florida. Thankfully, race day dawned sunny and clear yet still bone-chilling cold

but Brevard’s locals were prepared and ready! Those qualifying for Boston under the faster times that went into effect on Sept. 24 included Theresa Miller and Angela Wells, both from Merritt Island. the weekend known as amelia For the past few years, many of our local multisport athletes have set their sights on a half-iron distance race called the Atlantic Coast Triathlon. Because there are also the AmeliaMan sprint and Olympic-distance triathlons the same day in the same location (which is really Ferandina Beach) and put on by the same organization, people simply say they’re ‘training for Amelia’.

The race swims take place in the Atlantic – this year wetsuit legal – and the bike and runs courses are flat, fast and provide some wonderful shade on the run. In addition to our many local ath-letes getting on the podium in each of the three races, Melbourne’s John Davis and Jessica Crate turned in the fastest men’s and women’s 10K splits in the Olympic-distance. We also have to give a shout out to Satellite Beaches Meagan Campbell who, after winning the 35-39 age group of the half-iron distance, puffed out 35+ guy-style push-ups. Amazing stuff! CONGRATS to all of our locals who trained so hard to cross these finish lines:
