Can you believe it is December already? The year has flown by and the holiday season usu-ally keeps everyone extremely busy. Now is the time to take a break and plan something fun for the entire family to do for the holidays. Why not come out for a 2 mile walk or run with your family and / or friends to the Jingle Bell 2 Miler?

On Saturday evening, December 17th starting at 5:45 pm, Running Zone Foundation’s Jingle Bell 2 Miler will be held at the Satellite Beach Library. Everyone can enjoy getting into the holiday spirit with a little exercise, a Santa appearance on a fire truck, jingle bells on

everyone’s shoes and Santa hats for the early registrants. Lots of participants wear costumes and go all out for our holiday costume contest.

If you can’t make our event on Saturday eve-ning, I hope you are able to find a fun holiday spirited activity you can enjoy and take a little break from our hectic lives to enjoy your fam-ily and friends.

Happy Holidays from your friends at Running Zone.

We’d like to thank Florida Today sports writer Mark DeCotis and cor-respondent, Lyn Dowling, for their thorough and amazing coverage of this year’s race. If you missed the articles, log on to www.floridatoday.com and search on Space Coast Marathon Their coverage was so good, in fact, that we needed to find a new angle for this article so we didn’t repeat their work. So, after talking to Brevard’s fast-est overall male and female, we talked to some of the folks who also poured their hearts and souls into the event but for reasons or in ways you might not expect: Here, mostly in their own words are what they contributed to and took away from the event:

Volunteer finish line captain, cyndi Bergs (fifth year in the same position) While the average marathon runner is on the course between three and five hours, many of the volunteers put scores of their own time into making sure the participants receive an amazing expe-rience. This is a snapshot of Cyndi’s marathon weekend: (Pre-race) Unpacked 3,700 medals that came individually wrapped in plastic; packed and unpacked trucks with supplies at Running Zone, the expo at KSC and the

race site; assisted in the expo. (Race day) Starting at 3 a.m. Bergs and her crew began unloading trucks; set up the finish line and then laid out the medals towels and patches so they could easily be given to each finisher; decorated the finish area; set up iced towels, water, Gatorade and soda that was available to the athletes; worked the finish line until every athlete had crossed safely and then cleaned up, repacked the trucks and then unpacked them again at Running Zone. “Working behind the scenes of a race allows you to pay attention to details that you know are important to the participants and gives you a good perspective on how much work is really involved to put on a great event. I believe I have one of the best jobs – I get to see everyone accomplish his or her goal as they cross the finish line. I get an adrenaline rush watching the finishers, seeing their family and friends’ support and acknowledging that each participant has their own ‘story’, their own reason to push themselves mentally and physi-

There is something uniquely wonder-ful about winning an award at a large race on our home turf. Often times, just know-ing that our family and friends are rooting for us along the course or at the finish can make us run a little taller and try just a wee bit harder. We wanted to recognize all of our lo-cals who were able to stand on the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon stage to receive their awards from running leg-end Kathrine Switzer and former shuttle pilot and United Space Alliance CEO, Mike McCulley. Many of our runners also qualified for the Boston and/or New York City Marathons with their times. Congratulations to all of you!

cally. It’s a great way to recharge your own determination and…how many other op-portunities will you have to help someone achieve his or her dream?”

Volunteers/coaches/team in training gurus Barry and Michele Birdwell “The Running Zone and Running Zone Foundation have made a big impact on Team in Training both financially and spiritually. Most of our runners have a connection to the mission of curing blood cancer. They feel the mission support as well as the athletic support at all the Run-ning Zone events, and it is especially true at Space Coast Marathon. Brevard’s Best (our pet name for TNT participants) were out in force staffing water stations, directing runners and fans, and helping to cook eggs, pancakes and sausage for the post-race breakfast. After the volunteers at the two water stations on the north end of the course finished, they joined Michele and I at the finish line. There we formed a cheer line, did crowd control and directed the athletes to their final 100 meters toward the finish line. Marla Rhodes, Erin Lausher, Jeff McRoberts, Michelle and myself walked/ran in each one of the very last athletes.

Starting about a half-mile out we each brought them in one by one, passing them to each other so they wouldn’t have to enter the final 100 meters alone. When we all met the very last woman about a mile out, we told her that there was a medal waiting for her at the finish. She replied ‘oh no, they have all gone home. The course is closed.’ We told her ‘no way, the finish line is still up and there are volunteers waiting to hang a medal around your neck’. She was ecstatic and it was priceless to see the Running Zone race management team there along with us hooting and hollering. While working at the TNT booth at the expo, there were constant reminders of why we do all this. We had a man come up and thank us for what we done. He had just lost a friend to blood cancer and was running in his memory. Another gentle-man came by the booth and was looking at our mission board. He had tears in his eyes and told us he had lost a brother. He said that he was so thankful that there were people out there who cared enough to help raise money to find a cure so oth-ers would not have to lose someone like he did. There were happier stories that oth-ers shared about their loved ones who had won the battle because of new drugs and treatment procedures that have been developed over the years. We are mak-ing a difference and we just have to keep fighting!”

Space coast half-Marathon camp coach, Bernie Sher ‘The most rewarding aspect of coach-ing is watching your athletes cross the finish line of their goal race. It’s particu-larly rewarding when the race is their first attempt at a distance or an attempt at a PR (personal record, personal best) they never thought possible at the race distance. The camp, which this year was coached by myself, Barry Birdwell and Rick Foresteire, was established three years ago by Running Zone Foundation

and Health First Health Plans to help promote running and fitness. The pro-gram was divided into three groups: those who had never run before or had run very minimally; those who had a little back-ground and had maybe run a 5K or 10K and those who were gunning for a PR. After twelve weeks of training and encouragement, they were more than ready. Race day proved to be one of high excitement and anxiety but they all came through with flying colors. All met or exceeded their expectations and were overjoyed to cross the finish line and have

their coach hang a hard-earned medal around their neck. Most importantly, they recognized that they had achieved a goal that really very few people can accomplish and they had made a lifestyle change and commit-ment to fitness and good health.”

Florida today sports writer, Mark Decotis Mark has been covering the event since the course was moved to Cocoa in 2003. He also completed the 2004 half-marathon in 3:02:40. “It is heartening to see how much the marathon has grown and how many people are involved. A county of more than a half-million people needs major sporting events as a fulcrum and Space Coast was all that and more. Even more heartening was the spirit and the tireless effort the volunteers and organizers put into the event, treating every runner as if they were the only ones in the race and letting each and every one of them know that they mattered. While no one runner is bigger than a race, in this case the runners, not the race, were the basis, the reason for being. With that approach being sustained, the sky is the limit. Unfortunately the venue could not support many more and the venue is as vital as any other part of the event. As a parallel to Space Coast I think of the Boilermaker 15K in my hometown

of Utica, N.Y. I ran in and reported on the initial editions of the race that has become known around the world, drawing an international field but yet being THE event that local runners point to each and every year. It too had humble beginnings and grew so successful because organizers focused on the most important thing: the experience of the runners, just as is hap-pening here. Being involved in and sharing the energy of a major race as an organizer, a participant or a storyteller is an exhaust-ing yet exhilarating experience and the memories are cherished forever.”

athletes’ friend, Joy andrea“A lot of my 50 friends run. One day, after a long run, one was saying she had a goal for the Space Coast Half Marathon of 1:45 so I piped in and said, ‘well, since I’m not running it, if you need me to run you in the last few miles, let me know.’ She said she would love it. Rewind! I just offered to be a ban-dit! I didn’t think twice. Why not help a friend? Normally this would not be a big deal, but after some fun running com-munity controversy about being a bandit, as opposed to a pacer and being a friend/coach, who knows? Maybe they would ban me from local races and send me to

New York City… Oh. Wait. (Joy will be moving to NYC in a couple of months.) Needless to say, I definitely showed up after the start, parked a mile in, and with another bandito went out to the

Did you ever wonder what goes through the minds of the front-runners in a race? Below we hear from John Davis and Tracy Simso, Brevard’s top overall finishers at Space Coast. Both John and Tracy finished second overall in the half-marathon, followed for third by West Mel-bourne’s Steve Hedgespeth and Meredith Van Veen, formally of Melbourne, but now living in Vero Beach with husband Jim Van Veen, who won the Space Coast Half-Marathon in 2004 in one hour, 17 minutes and 13 seconds. There were no top three overall local finishers in the marathon.

John Davis, 34, Melbourne, 1:20:22What keeps bringing you back? I try to support local races any time that I can, so when we have class acts like Space Coast Runners and Running Zone putting together a great event year after year, I’m always thrilled to run it. Were you and Steve Hedgespeth, who finished third overall, working together and how did the race go for you personally? As Space Coast was three weeks after the New York City marathon (where John ran a 2:59:59), I didn’t really expect to set a PR. Most people say it takes about four weeks to fully recover. As soon as I stepped out the door that morning, I had no intention of running for time - my goal was to get 1000 ROY points. (The race is part of the Space Coast Runners Runner of the Year Series) The weather was low 70s with gusty winds - not a PR day, but I still wanted to be the first Space Coast Runners’ finisher. Steve is a great runner, and I have the utmost respect for him. This event only increased my respect for him. With that being said, I think we were both out for the 1000 ROY points. We took off with a group of about five people going out into some fairly stiff winds. Honestly, the pace was pretty slow and easy all the way out (6:10 or so), and I assumed we would

just keep this up and I would try to kill the last mile for the win. Little did I know the battle that was coming up! Right after the turnaround - maybe mile 7, Steve broke from the group at what looked like a sprint. I would guess he jumped up his pace by 30 seconds per mile. I let him go, wondering why he was taking off so fast. Next thing I know, he was easily a minute in front of me. I knew I had work to do. I slowly started closing the gap, but it took about two miles to catch him where we were finally running side by side again. Closing the gap was tough, es-pecially because we had both broken from the pack at that point. Occasionally we heard reports of ‘the next runner is three minutes ahead’. To me that sounded like an eternity so I had no intention of going for second place - I just wanted to get top three and 1000 ROY points. I also remembered seeing how far the second place guy was in front

of us at the turnaround, so I thought we had no chance. Around mile 10, Steve and I started surging back and forth several times. I still felt good, but I started to wonder how much he had left. With about two miles to go, something completely unexpected happened - we saw the second place guy in front of us. At the breakneck pace Steve and I were running while fighting for the ROY lead, we started closing the gap on him very quickly. We passed him so fast, Steve looked back to check if the guy had a number and was actually in the race. I still can’t believe we caught him. With about a mile to go, I real-ized that I didn’t hear Steve’s breathing anymore, so I knew I finally had a bit of a lead. I picked up the pace as much as I had left. When I turned to go into the park, I didn’t see him on my heels, so I figured I had second place. What did you like best about this year’s event? All in all, it was the toughest strate-gic race I have ever ran at any distance. I have to give a lot of credit to Steve be-cause I never would’ve pushed anywhere near that hard without him pushing the pace. Even though it was two minutes and 30 seconds slower than what I wanted to run, I was really happy with the result, in what was my highest finish at a half marathon.

tracy Simso, 38, Melbourne, 1:30:21What was it like to run the race you’ve worked hard on/at for so many years? It was so wonderful to finally get a chance to run the Space Coast Half-Marathon. I did run the full in 2006 before I started working at Running Zone but although it was a beautiful course, it wasn’t my best experience as far as full marathons go so I always wanted a chance to run again.

Melbourne’s John Davis poses with his 2nd Overall award from the Space Coast Half-Marathon. Think you’re seeing double? The other award is for taking the top spot among those who belong to Space Coast Runners club. His top spot was worth 1,000 points in this season’s Runner of the Year Series.

10-mile mark to await my runner. On the way, it was great to see other friends and to cheer and get some pictures. When my runner came along, I shamelessly entered the race, pushing several people out of the

way to get to her. Just kidding. There was no one around, so I just started running with her. I asked her to tell me the pace, which she did, and off we went! Along the way, we picked up another runner from my Sunday run group, and I started calling him names if he couldn’t keep up… and then made a new friend, and told him the same! The three of them finished the race and my original runner made her goal time. I of course, peeled off before they even made the turn onto the finish chute- mainly so I could go back and pick up a few more runners. I did have to dodge the official race photographer, because I wouldn’t want to waste a digital photo on my non-numbered self. So I didn’t get in anyone’s way, encouraged some runners that I knew, and a few I didn’t; all of who thanked me at the end. I didn’t eat or drink anything on the course (but I was offered a beer), and overall, I had a blast! Sometimes helping others accomplish their goals is much more fulfilling than running a race yourself. Will I be branded as a bandit? Possi-bly. As a good friend? You bet. And guess which one I care about?

Keynote speaker and running legend, Kathrine Switzer This, along with lots of race photos, was posted on her Facebook page: Spacecoast! What a race! Blast offs and countdowns and space suits and a medal to work extra hard for--it was one of the most unique races ever, and I’ll be writing about it in Marathon & Beyond Magazine. Never before has my pasta din-ner speech been included in a whole ‘pro-duction’ of Kennedy Space Center video presentations! It was also astonishing and validating seeing so many of you at the Running Zone store and at my booth at the expo, thank you for coming to see me and get a photo with me. Kat and Alex were our special Facebook photogs and have captured you all on these pages. What

fun we had! Congrats to all of you for great performances, but super-congrats to Denise and Don Piercy and their team for directing a great race! I’ll sure be back!

half-Marathon 1:40 pace group leader, Jessica crate “Pacing is so much different than when I race on my own. The reasons be-ing that you are solely focused on hitting bang-even splits and letting your group know when aid stations are approaching; you must encourage your group to not fall off the pace or go out too fast and keep them positive and motivated the whole time. I had three people achieve PRs; five finished their first half-marathon and one jumped up to my pace group. Along the way, it was so great to see everyone out, run with other athletes once I was done and then loop back and help a really good friend, Stephanie Crosby, in to her first full marathon finish. The reward? Being able to use my talent so I can be a part of helping others achieve their goal and witnessing it hap-pen. For me, sometimes it’s more excit-ing to run someone in than it is for me to finish. On the flip side, it’s a blast and you also get to work the expo, test out new gear and cheer on the course while getting your long run in at a controlled pace.”

What did you like best about the race? The first exciting moment was Denise (Piercy) being willing to consider giv-ing me the time off. (Simso, who works for Piercy at Running Zone, has worked the race for the past four years.) Then Andy, (Simso’s fiancée) worked really hard to get volunteers to work including his (Florida Tech) students and Clemente Center staff. My parents worked even harder cooking breakfast for more than 3,000 people for hours that Sunday morn-ing in order for it to become reality. How was your race and did you run alone or were you and Meredith (Van Veen) working together? The race was so much fun! It was very windy the first half, which wasn’t recip-rocated on the second half, I should add. There was a pack that stayed together the first five miles that included my fiancée, Andy. I was ahead of Meredith until about mile six or six-and-a-half and then

she and Andy, pulled ahead for a while. Around mile 10.5 I finally passed Mer-edith back up and wasn’t going to let the second place finish get taken back. I still had Andy in view and was trying to catch up but just didn’t have enough time. It was awesome coming into the park and having so many friends encouraging me and hearing Andy’s name called over the speaker (as he finished in 1:29:48) always gives me a jolt. Hearing my name called as second place female and know-ing my parents were there to see it and having (co-worker) Amy (Minter) at the finish line was exciting! Andy also made the finish exciting by being there wait-ing for and hugging me shouting ‘that’s my girlfriend’.) Overall I would say that although it wasn’t the time I was hoping for, having Meredith and I going back and forth over the course of the 13.1 miles made it such a fun race and a learning experience for sure!

Melbourne’s Tracy Smith, right, shares a hug with fiancee Andy Dutra after she placed sec-ond overall in the Space Coast Half Marathon.

There were plenty of sweaty hugs, happy cheers and salty tears at the 40th annual Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon finish line in Cocoa’s River-front Park on Nov. 27. A record 3,100 athletes from 41 states, D.C. and 12 countries were presented with enormous space shuttle finishers’ medals, 40th an-niversary patches and a race logo’d beach towel to commemorate the completion of their 13.1 or 26.2-mile space-themed adventures. Many of those runners had shown the same heart and soul prior to race day when Space Coast Marathon posted this plea on their Facebook page on Nov. 15: “Please keep fellow runner, Pete Cara-betta and his wife, Nita, in your thoughts and prayers. Pete, who was signed up for the marathon and has both run and

volunteered in past years, was hit by a car while riding his bike yesterday. The escalade had to be moved off of his body. He suffered a crushed pelvis, lost lots of blood and is in serious condition. If you know Pete, please dedicate one of your

miles to him on race day so he can still ‘finish’ on Nov. 27. Stay safe out there.” The outpouring of love and concern for Pete by friends and strangers was im-

Pete Carabetta’s fellow Fedex employees relayed Pete’s bib #488 to a marathon finish of 3:49.

mediate and overwhelming. The running community – including athletes from other states and countries – offered prayers, sup-port and blood donations. Pam Maxwell and Bonnie Klein, who stayed close with the Ironman’s wife, kept everyone updated on his condition. There was little doubt that those prayers were being heard. It was no surprise that on race day, scores of athletes had inked #488 – Pete’s bib number – on their own bibs and bod-ies, dedicating their race or a portion of it to him. Another two-dozen or so fellow Fed-Ex employees pulled together a team and relayed #488 to the marathon finish line in 3:49.

And many have also taken to heart the inscription that Pete had written on his Facebook page prior to the accident that read ‘never, never, never give up’. Every race finish is special but there is something about the all-inclusive, en-couraging and sometimes surprising vibe of Space Coast that reminds us we are, indeed, part of a special community. While the list of complete Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon results on available at www.runningzone.com/, we’ve listed the finish times of our local friends and neighbors on pages 4 and 6. Congratulations!

Whew – it’s hard to keep up with Kaitlin Shiver. This year alone the 22-year-old Run-ning Zone sponsored athlete led the U.S. in Beijing with her fourth place finish at the ITU U-23 World Championships; was chosen for the USA Triathlon project 2016 program – think Olympics; and finished second overall and in the money in the inaugural five-race USA Triathlon Elite Race Series. And if that weren’t enough, Kaitlin achieved it all while balancing her stud-ies at the University of Florida where she is pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and while planning her Dec. 28 wedding to fellow pro elite triathlete, Ed Donner. We want to congratulate Kaitlin on her incredibly outstanding and consistent triathlon performances and thank her for being a great role model in our community! Following is a recap of Kaitlin’s year in triathlon. 2011 Highlights: Member of the USA Triathlon Project 2016 program • Runner-up in the five-event 2011 USA Triathlon Elite Race Series • Placed fourth in the Oct. 9 series finale in Myrtle Beach, S.C. • Won the Under-23 national title and

finished third overall at the USA Triathlon Elite National Championship on Sept. 24 at Buffalo, N.Y. • Placed second at the Monroe and San Francisco Elite Race Se-ries events, both ITU Pan American Cups • Led the U.S. with a fourth-place finish at the 2011 ITU Under-23 World Champion-

ships on Sept. 10 in Beijing • Also earned third at the Cartagena ITU Pan American Cup and was 17th in the Clermont Elite Race Series Opener on March 5 • Win-ner of the 2011 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship title Tuscaloosa, Ala., on April 9.

Even the Grinch has a soft heart for the Jingle Bell 2-Miler. After all, who wouldn’t love an energetic crowd of ath-letes racing along holiday festooned streets with jingle bells ringing from their toes? This year’s race kicks off at 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 17 from the Satellite Beach Library. Everyone who signs up for this flat, fast race will receive a gorgeous long-sleeved holiday race shirt for their bodies and jingle bells for their shoes. The first 500 to register will also receive a Santa hat. And every one is invited to sport their best Merry Wear for a shot at the Best Holiday Costume award and then enjoy a post-race party with treats provided by Long Doggers. of a 37” Samsung LCD T.V.! And what’s Christmas without kids? During the race, Planet Kid will provide free, fun and safe activities while their parents are racing. After the 2-miler, tiny tots can trot in their own event – the free Santa’s Little Helper Kids’ Run with Zippy the Gecko. They will also be able to tell Santa how good they’ve been – or not - when the Jolly Old Man arrives on the scene on the back of a fire truck! But don’t let the cheery spirit of the event fool you. The race is number four in the seven-race Running Zone Founda-tion Race Series where a minimum of four races has to be run to be eligible for a piece of the $10,000 prize purse.
