Birdwatching

Last month we went by coach to the RSPB reserve at Minsmere. As the journey was quite long, in the region of 2 to 3 hours, we all hoped that we would be rewarded with a good variety of birds. We weren't disappointed! Most of us had hoped to see the elusive Bittern, but
unfortunately it was heard but not seen. Instead we were treated to a magnificent display by a pair of Marsh Harriers, one of the largest birds of prey in this part of England. We watched them for several minutes and then they were joined by two Hobbies, one of our smaller raptors. During our visit we saw many smaller song birds and several types of gull. Some of which were: Kittiwakes, Black headed gulls and Common Terns. We also saw Avocets, Lapwing, Black-tailed Godwit, Sand Martins and their young. Then a Reed Warbler made a visit and gave us plenty of time to confirm that it really was what we thought. All in all, a great day's birdwatching! Diane Wallace
Our July meeting saw members bring along a wealth of personal documents and memorabilia including aerial photos taken in France two days after D-Day, a teenage diary, ration and ID cards, medical cards, 1919 magazines about the Great War, a Concorde ticket, a couple of passports and baptism certificates. There was so much variety that we had to choose the most popular theme which was items to do with school.
School reports, which came in different types or designs were discussed and briefly looked at - with some competition about who was in the most crowded class and had achieved the lowest place! Photos and newspaper articles were produced.
It was unfortunate that we could not look at more of the interesting items that members had brought along at that meeting, but the bonus was that it has given us a lot of inspiration about what the themes of other meetings could be about. The enthusiasm of our members, both to sort out items and to talk about them was inspiring.
Stanford-le-Hope & District U3A –August 2019 Newsletter Page 8
The meeting was drawn to a close with another of the Brian McDonald family tales. He has found a second ancestor using an alias and he could not work out why this one changed his surname (twice it would seem) – neither could we!
The next meeting of the group will be on Wednesday August 21st at 2pm at the Evangelical Church Hall in Fobbing Road, Corringham. Due to holidays and grandparenting duties for some, there will be fewer members present. The themes of the meeting will be some of our childhood memories and helping others to solve their Family History Research Problems. It would really useful if you could email Diane or Peter the details in advance of problems you need help with, so that they can then circulate it for members to think about and bring ideas of a way forward to the meeting.
The computer session on 7th August has been cancelled as the Basildon Library is have a major computer upgrade on that day so the sessions will be restarted on September 4th. The computer sessions are worth coming to because you get two hours of free access to two major genealogical websites and the National Newspaper Library – this is double the normal amount of time allowed. One of our members will be there to help you. The amount of time they can spend with you will depend on how many others need help. Do remember to inform Diane Wallace if you are coming to one of our computer sessions, and also to tell her if you suddenly have to cancel your booking – because someone else might want your place.
Flower Arranging

putting them in a vase. Come along and enjoy a morning creating something
special to take home. We are all enthusiastic and friendly, helping one another

join us!
We also enjoy workshops and days out, where we are guided by professionals.
We meet 1st Wednesday of the month at Gateway Peoples Centre in Stanford

French Conversation
Diane Wallace
We start a session with general chat about what has happened to us since the last meeting we attended – including visits, holidays and family matters. At some point we go onto the revision topic which was decided upon in the previous session.
The revision topics we have looked at this month have been transport, illnesses and accidents, followed by books and films. We not only look at vocabulary but the structures that are used to put the vocabulary into sentences but try to keep it to a few simple examples. This is not exam revision!
Whiplash – the English word which describes the sudden and forceful action that causes the injury - is un coup du lapin in informal French (translating as a rabbit blow/punch). Looking up rabbit punch in an English dictionary it says it is a sharp blow to the back of the neck which can cause unconsciousness or even death – so the French is also appropriate.
It is not just language skills that we are investigating at our sessions. When providing our refreshments, we have tested out various gluten-free bought cakes and biscuits, noting that many manufactured ones are very sweet. Some of us have experimented with home-baking, replacing normal flour with gluten free alternatives, and this can make a change to the texture of the end product.

The Golf group meets on the first and third Monday of each month teeing off at 1pm. The location is Dunton Hills Golf Club along the A128 towards Brentwood but before the A127. Cost is £7 per 18 Hole Round for us Oldies. All holes are par 3 by the way.
We are a small group but extremely happy in walking the course in good weather. The golf is probably not quite as good as The British Open standard but at least we try.
All are welcome to join us whatever the standard of golf you play. We have plenty of golf balls for those who regularly drive into the water hazards of which there are a few!

On 10th July our U3A set off for an evening trip on a Thames Sailing Barge. After arriving in time for a quick drink in one of Maldon’s pubs on the quay side, we boarded Hydrogen and, as we had the barge to ourselves, every one found a spot to sit on the top deck. We set sail alongside the sister barge Thistle. It wasn't long before the sails were raised and we were powered by the light wind. Some of us chose to have a Ploughman's or Smoked Fish Platter as we passed Heybridge Basin and the Blackwater. It was warm but cloudy so that we could not see the sunset. However, when we returned to Maldon Quay, the Morris Dancers were on the dock side so we enjoyed a great end to a lovely evening!

Line Dancing

Line dancing is a weekly class held at Horndon Village Hall, SS17 8LB.
Goodness me, we have just completed five years of weekly line dancing! Our
anniversary was on the 23rd July and, as we are always looking for an excuse for
a social occasion, we all brought a plate to share on the 24th. Some members
have been with us from the start! In fact, members seldom leave and that is
why our waiting list is so long! We have come a very long way in that five years
and know a considerable number of dances now

We continued the theme of learning colours and clothing using a catalogue to
identify and describe the items. We then constructed short sentences asking to
see or buy the articles. This is more difficult than it sounds because of the
grammar involved but everyone did very well.
Describing what one has seen or done requires the knowledge of the past tense
so we took a few tentative steps down this road. Once again, I applaud the
enthusiasm and commitment of the group for their efforts in a difficult area. We
are trying to find a suitable path between enjoying the sessions and learning
enough to be able to converse.
Local History Group
Julia Harding 01375 671519
We continue to get together on the last Monday in the month at the Evangelical Church Hall in Fobbing Road at 2 pm. As the last Monday in August is a Bank Holiday, our next meeting will be Monday, 30th September.
Peter Watson will be joining us at the September meeting to give a talk on the history of Stanford-Le-Hope.
All members are welcome to attend our monthly meetings and join us on our trips out (provided there is space) so please come and join us. We are always interested in hearing about the experiences of those members who grew up in the area.
Visits planned for September are:
• Eltham Palace (by car). Date to be agreed.
It has been very hot of late for dancing so, as well as keeping ourselves hydrated by drinking, we sometimes enjoy an ice-cream or lolly in the break. On hot days, when funds allow, we trot off to the local shop and come back with delicious ice-creams. Then all the weight we have danced off goes on again!

Local Research Projects
Diane Wallace
Sue Green 01375 676441
For our first project we are investigating the changes and growth of Stanford-le-Hope from 1950, including shops, industry, financial services, pubs, churches, transport and entertainment.
July has seen the interviews, and the background work of transcribing them and sorting the topics covered, continuing, as we ready ourselves for when we write it up It helps us to sort out which chapters we may use, and flags up what important areas we need follow up by doing more research.
There are still quite a lot of interviews to transcribe and we need to knuckle down, ignore the sun and work our way through them. To help us speed this up we would welcome help from anyone able to do a bit of typing.
Some interesting and surprising facts have emerged - but you will have to wait to find out what they are!
London Walks

Brian McDonald
With Dave on holiday and Brian unwell it was left to Bernie Smith and Colin
Wale to lead the walk. Many thanks to them both.
First, we were back in the newly refurbished Liberty Bounds for coffee before
taking the train to Kensington where we heard about the Duchess of Bedford
who introduced the practice of afternoon tea. Lunch was taken in Holland Park.
One minute we were in a busy high street and then the walk took us through
some old cobbled mews with plenty of flowers. There were many blue plaques

including ones for Frankie Howard and Joan Sims. The weather was just right
and, hopefully, everybody had a good day.
Lunch and Chat
Chris Brown 01708 852023
The Lunch and Chat Group meets on the first Friday of the month 11:00am at
the Langdon Hills Golf and Country Club, Lower Dunton Road.
We hope we are a friendly and welcoming group and enjoy meeting new
members. We discuss any topic that members bring along and then usually have
a lively and entertaining meal together with a lot of laughter. If you are
interested in joining us please contact Chris Brown so that the right size table
can be booked.
Mixed Craft Group
Kay Alcon 01375 415290
The group works as a team sharing ideas and inspiration, leading the workshops,
passing on skills and knowledge of their chosen craft. There is always plenty of
advice available between members offering techniques and places to go to
obtain materials. We have a swaps table where books and materials are put on
display for anyone to take away usually free of charge. The group meets
monthly on the first Tuesday of every month at the Methodist Church Hall,
High Street, Stanford le Hope SS17 OEY2pm until 4pm and costs £6.00 for four
monthly sessions.
This month we enjoyed making cross-stitched initials.
Do look at the photographs of our group on the Stanford-le-Hope U3A website.

We all met up in mid-
afternoon and went for a
lovely river cruise along
the River Ouse. After a
couple of glasses of
wine, we met up again
for the evening meal.

The next day some of us used our bus passes to pay a visit to Castle Howard
which had statue-lined corridors filled with mementoes from the Grand Tours
made by the Howard Family. Many films have been filmed there including
Brideshead Revisited. After looking around the gardens lunch was in the open-
air. Marc and Kay went to Harrogate by train, which they enjoyed, and Peter
and Beryl went to York Minster. We all met up again for an evening meal.

The train ticket, using our Senior Rail Card, was from Stanford-le-Hope
(including the underground) to Kings Cross and then with LNER to York, with
Stanford-le-Hope & District U3A –August 2019 Newsletter Page 16
reserved seats, at a cost of only £48 return. What good value that was!
LNER were very good in that they emailed us on several occasions reminding us
of our impending travel and not to forget our tickets! I suppose they thought
that seniors might forget (as if we would). They also emailed us once we were
home to make sure the journey was ok and what we thought of it.
We hope to be doing some more trips in the future which will include Liverpool,
Bristol, Edinburgh and anywhere else we fancy, plus we may be going to the
French Battlefields next year.

Carol Munro Drapers Hall London July 2019
Founded over 600 years ago, the Drapers’ Company is incorporated by Royal Charter and is one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies in the City of London. It has evolved into an organisation that addresses contemporary issues, gaining a new relevance through its philanthropic role with schools and almshouses. A Draper was one who bought from the clothmaker to sell the cloth on ie. a middleman. As the trading activities of the guilds expanded, members required a Hall where they could meet to discuss and co-ordinate business. At first, they used individual’s
houses but in the 1420s the Drapers' Guild decided to build its own Hall. This first Hall was in St. Swithin's Lane. The present Hall, situated in Throgmorton Street, was bought from King Henry VIII in 1543 for the sum of 1,800 marks (approximately £1,200). This had been the house of Thomas Cromwell, Earl of
Stanford-le-Hope & District U3A –August 2019 Newsletter Page 17
Essex and Chief Minister to Henry, but had been forfeited to the King on Cromwell's execution in July 1540. Later destroyed by the Great Fire of 1666, Drapers’ Hall was rebuilt between 1667 and 1671 to designs by Edward Jarman and on the same floor plan as the original Nothing starts without a cuppa’ so when 28 of us visited Drapers Hall in July it was tea and biscuits that welcomed us. A guided tour with the Hall’s Archivist Penny followed and we were overwhelmed with the history and magnificence of Drapers Hall. A late lunch at Wetherspoon’s and then time for the Bank of England Museum before the C2C train home. A great day out enjoyed by us all with lots of good feedback. After two years of trying, I finally got the opportunity to take a group to visit one of England’s oldest Music Halls Wilton’s Music Hall Sign by Dick Fox
There have been management changes but thankfully, they have now made it possible to take groups of 15 or more, or you can join a tour group, to look round this very interesting building. Our guide, who made the visit very enjoyable, first of all gave us the history of the place. The building has been renovated in a way that
also retains an aged look. There are some very unusual features including ‘snapshots’ inside, of the outside of the four terraced houses which comprise Wilton’s.

Stanford-le-Hope & District U3A –August 2019 Newsletter Page 19
The area was originally made up of Victorian terraced houses and amongst others, attracted, ‘ladies of the night’. Our guide was very good at conjuring up a picture of the previously gas-lit neighbourhood. Wilton’s has been used as a backdrop for filming and some of the decor, such as the bar and balcony, has been modified by these users.
Performances are still held here in the evenings when the bar is open and food is available. Wilton’s is an easy walk down Royal Mint Street from Fenchurch Street and Tower Hill stations. It has a website if anyone wants to know more
about it. Jenny Lees

pencils should be found beside it but if not, there should be spares inside the box. All the
suggestions put in there will be looked at, but it is helpful if you put your name on the paper
you use, so the Executive Committee can get back to you directly. If the piece of paper you use
is very small – it may not be seen when the box is checked.
Newsletters are printed and saved for members who require it in a larger format, as
long as they have given their name to the Newsletter Editor or another member of the

If you want to see if the large print version would help you, there is usually a spare large

Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery Thursday 24th October 2019
Enjoy the distillery experience.
We will be guided through the distillery by one of their hosts who will take us through the site explaining the processes and answering any questions.
Discover the 10 exotic botanicals which are infused into every drop of gin. You'll go behind the scenes of the still house and discover what makes Bombay
Sapphire so exquisite. We will then visit the Mill Bar to enjoy a complimentary drink suited to your
own taste. Soft drinks will also be available.
**AS THIS IS A WORKING DISTILLERY GUESTS MUST WEAR SUITABLE FOOTWEAR.
NO OPEN TOED SHOES OR HIGH HEELS ON THE EXPERIENCE** The cost of this trip is 43.00 per head.
Tickets will be on sale from 1:30 at the August General Meeting from Christine Gomm or Jean Jardine.

Walking:
Amblers
Tessa Duggan 01375 670212
Jenny Radford 01375 676338
Here's the write up for the amble that wasn't. This is becoming a pattern. Last July the amble had to be cancelled because the Met Office gave out an amber warning for very high temperatures (and they were). This July the amble had to be cancelled because the Met Office warned of extremely high temperatures (and they were). Very sorry to all our amblers that there was no July amble this year either.
Never mind! Next month come and have a gander at the ganders and other
geese and ducks on the lake in Gloucester Park, Cranes Farm Road, Basildon
SS14 3DE, for our August Amble. We may see the cheeky squirrels that live
there, or a graceful heron too. We will meet at 10.30 am in the Sporting Village
Car Park on Thursday 29th August. Look forward to seeing you there.

Leigh on Sea to Southend on 15th August 2019 Do you fancy a walk along the seafront from Leigh-on-Sea towards Southend with a friendly group? Why not join us for this popular summer walk on Thursday 15th August? We will meet on the platform at Stanford-Le-Hope Station at 10.20. in order to catch the 10.30. train. We will get into the back carriage of the train (this is so that if anyone wants to join the train else where they will know where to find us). Alternatively, you can meet us outside Leigh-on-Sea Station at 10.50. in readiness to start the walk at 11.00 heading along the coast to Southend. The walk to the pier at Southend is about three and a half miles and on the way we will pass close to Chalkwell and Westcliff Stations should anyone want to
Stanford-le-Hope & District U3A –August 2019 Newsletter Page 26
shorten the walk. It may be nice to take some refreshments and/or lunch in Southend before our return to Leigh-on-Sea either on foot, train or bus. I'll look forward to seeing you then on what I'm hoping will be a nice sunny day.

A change for the group - one of our members bought along two types of Pimms - one an expensive one and the other a cheaper one, both were enjoyed as well as the massive amounts of fruit. This was followed by Prosecco and Caesar Salad, scones, cream and strawberries. Thanks to all who made this a very enjoyable summery session. We are hoping to organise a BBQ in August for members only!

If you have an idea for a new interest group, or would like to lead (perhaps as part of a team) a completely
new group or another version of an existing group (in order to eliminate a waiting list) please contact
Paul or Jean.
Please let your interest group leader know if you no longer wish or cannot attend their group on a
permanent basis or are likely to have a prolonged absence. Your name can be taken off a full group’s list if
you have not attended for 3 months without notifying the group leader, and you can then be replaced by
another member who is on the waiting list for that interest group

Dates of General Meetings
These are on the second Thursday of the month at The Springhouse Club from
2.00pm until 4.00pm.
Please can members help us by not arriving at the Springhouse Hall until 1.30pm which is
the time from which we have the Hall officially booked. Committee Members and Speakers
need time and space to set up the room to be able to deal with things such as the
projector, attendance, membership and distribution of Newsletters. If members arrive
early it hinders this process.
