Lighting up LargsLargs’ seafront is set to become a shining example across south west Scotland when over 40 streetlights are replaced with brand new LED lights.

At the beginning of February Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland, began a short programme of work to replace the dated lighting on Largs seafront. The existing orange-glow bulbs are being replaced by new, bright white LED lights, providing better perception of light in this picturesque part of the Ayrshire town; whilst reducing energy use by up to 60%. The project will concentrate around the ferry terminal and seafront area, providing improved light for visitors and locals alike. It is expected the work will be completed ahead of the busy tourist season. The lighting columns are eight metres high with a black coating protecting them from the rust which affected their predecessors. The LED lights are also guaranteed for up to 20 years so there is less maintenance required.

Gordon Wilson, Contract Director

EditorialFirstly, I would like to welcome you to the first stakeholder newsletter of 2015 and also my first since joining Scotland TranServ as contract director in January this year. I have been delighted to meet with some, but not yet all of our partners and stakeholders and I look forward to working with you all over the next three years and beyond.

It has been a busy start to 2015, particularly with the challenges that winter presents. We have already carried out over 500 winter patrols and over 12,000 tonnes of salt has been distributed across the network from our six depots in Polmadie, Dumfries and Galloway and Ayr. Our winter teams have been working 24/7 since 1 October last year including during the Christmas period; showing a dedication and spirit that is second to none.

As I settle into my new role, I have been making tracks to get to know more of you. I would like to take this opportunity to gather your feedback on how we can work better together and would encourage you to contact me should you wish to discuss any pressing issues or ask any burning questions. Please send your comments, questions or suggestions to [email protected].

I recently had the opportunity to film a brand new video, in which I share my vision for Scotland TranServ going forward. This can be found on our website and I hope that you find this both interesting and insightful.

It is my intention to focus on four key areas to move our business forward; our people, making safety personal, delivering for our client and working cohesively with our employees, stakeholders and partner organisations to become the leading road network management and maintenance provider in Scotland by providing a pro-active, collaborative, customer focused team trusted to deliver an efficient, sustainable service that exceeds client and stakeholder expectations.

Roddy Stoddart, Lighting and Electrical Delivery Manager said:“We are delighted to roll out this replacement programme of LED lighting across South West Scotland, with Largs being one of the first stops on the project. “Replacing the ageing orange-glow streetlights with the new energy and cost efficient LED equivalent will not only improve the town’s appearance and showcase its stunning attractions, but will also be kinder to the environment.”

A751 works finish ahead of schedule

The A751 south of Inch Parks Farm reopened (Friday, 27 March) two days ahead of schedule.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland carried out the £1m maintenance scheme, which began on 9 March. The work has resulted in a significant improvement to the road surface and drainage system on the A751 which joins the A77 to the A75 in Dumfries and Galloway.

Favourable weather conditions and the dedication of operatives working on site has accelerated the work programme which was expected to last until Sunday 29 March. A unique paving system was also used which enabled operatives to lay twice the amount of asphalt in one pass; resulting in a quicker application.

Gordon Wilson, Contract Director for Scotland TranServ said:

“I am delighted to announce that these works have been completed ahead of schedule, opening up this vital lifeline route to over 1,500 motorists and heavy goods traffic that use this route each day.

“These long term improvements will benefit the local area in advance of the busy upcoming summer tourist season.”

This project brings a total investment of almost £4.5m across Dumfries and Galloway’s trunk roads network over the last 12 months.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of its client Transport Scotland is committed to supporting communities and making a significant contribution to the wider economy wherever possible.

Ready, Set, Go! Scotland TranServ is in the running for this year’s GO4SET challenge with St. Andrew’s and St. Bride’s High School in East Kilbride. The team from Scotland TranServ, comprising of Stephen McGuigan, Isla Davidson and Rachel Kennedy is mentoring six pupils over a 10 week programme as part of the initiative developed by the Engineering Development Trust.

As always, a popular part of the challenge is when the pupils visit the mentor company’s place of work. The pupils visited the Polmadie office and depot in January and were treated to a tour of the Control Room and a TRISS vehicle. This was followed by an environmental activity based on noise pollution and an interactive session on endangered species’.

Stephen McGuigan, Senior Engineer (Structures) commented:

“The school project has many aspects including background research, personal statements, model building, publicity boards and each pupil contributing to a live presentation to the judges. “It is most certainly a challenge and it is very rewarding for the mentors to be able to provide advice and guidance to a very enthusiastic team.”

M8 Hillington FootbridgeLocal residents and businesses are set to benefit from the addition of a brand new, £2.5 million footbridge on the M8 near Hillington. Scotland TranServ is currently overseeing the works which are being carried out by contractor Graham Construction in a project which will last 16 weeks.

The new bridge will be constructed off site, then installed under a series of total closures which will take place over three Saturday evenings during April and May.

Scotland TranServ currently manages and maintains over 1,800 structures across south west Scotland. The current bridge no longer conforms to modern day standards and will be replaced by a sustainable, new structure which is partly made of recycled materials and features easy access for cyclists and less-abled pedestrians.

David Thomson, Engineer (Structures) said:“This project will see the old bridge, which has come to the end of its operational lifespan, being replaced by a brand new, sustainable structure which is in keeping with modern day standards and will benefit local residents for years to come.”
