Beverly Denbigh says she was surprised to learn that she had won the Mick Deaver award for fostering good relations with Mizzou students.

Denbigh said she’s just been doing her job the past 30 years in the School of Health Professions Department of Physical Therapy from secretary to office assistant III.

Denbigh knew many of the alumni who returned to campus last fall to celebrate the 50th anniversary of physical therapy at Mizzou, and she frequently receives notes of thanks and updates. When alumni call, she recognizes their name and gets a mental picture of their composite photo from when they were a student in the program.

Denbigh and her husband, John, raised their three children on Mizzou’s Foremost Dairy Farm west of Columbia, where John is the farm manager. But ask anyone in physical therapy and you’ll learn she is considered the “mom” of the department, too.

“I try to bake chocolate chip cookies or bring in food once a week for the students,” she said. “Sometimes, I might not have time to bake so I just buy a bag of tacos at Taco Bell. It could be the only thing they’ve eaten all day so I try to take care of them.”

In the spirit of friendly competition, the first year class held a chocolate chip cookie bake-off. Despite the nine entries, the eighty nine student judges honored Bev with a landslide victory! The associate chair made a $100 donation in Denbigh’s name to the Adult Day Connection in Clark Hall.

“Bev certainly is the key contact once you gain acceptance to the program. She helps the students through the entire process of admissions, parking issues, registration, graduation plans and every other detail in between,” her nominator wrote. “Many students have indicated the decision to come to MU PT is in part due to the assistance and guidance they received from Bev…”

Denbigh’s workload has increased over the years as enrollment in the program has increased, but she isn’t one to complain. She manages curriculum and enrollment records, registration and graduation checks among other things, and her job doesn’t end when a student graduates. As alumni move from state-to-state, Denbigh compiles necessary licensing paperwork.

Denbigh is glad she landed in the physical therapy department in 1986. “The faculty, staff, students, it’s very family-oriented,” she says. “I want to help make sure the students have a smooth transition into the program and when they graduate, I hope they know I want them to come back.”

Brian Weimer’s responsibilities are many, as are his contributions to the MU Police Department. Most people recognize him as the public

information officer for MUPD, but his role reaches far beyond being the “guy in front of the camera.”

“I might take reporter’s phone calls, but our officers are who do the work day-in and day-out to keep our campus a safe place to learn, work and play,” Weimer said. “MUPD has a great team of officers and staff.”

Weimer, second in command at MUPD, oversees policies and procedures; handles recruitment, hiring and training; supervises patrol/investigative/crime prevention staff, among a long list of other duties.

Under his leadership, MUPD earned Advanced Accreditation with Excellence and is in compliance with 100% of all mandatory and optional standards required through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Upon the CALEA accreditation and meeting additional standards specific to campus law enforcement, MUPD also was reaccredited through the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. MUPD is the only university in Missouri to be accredited through both organizations.

“Brian’s work and commitment to the accreditation process has brought national attention to our agency. … His high level of competency and success in the area of police accreditation alone would make him an outstanding candidate,” for the Barbara S. Uehling Award for Administrative Excellence, read his nomination form.

Weimer, who has worked at MU for 23 years, has continued to learn on the job, taking advantage of additional police training along the way. He attended the Southern Police Institute in 2000; received his master’s in criminal justice from Columbia College in 2002; trained at the FBI in 2007; and attended Northwestern’s Police and Command Staff training in 2011.

Besides continuing his education, Weimer remains physically fit and encourages his officers to do so by allowing some on-duty exercise time. “This proactive program goes a long way toward not only keeping officers physically fit, but assists in attracting quality applicants and increases retention rates,” wrote his nominator.

Weimer grew up in Macon, Mo., and enjoys fishing and hunting. He started working at MU four days after he married his wife, Suzanne, in 1992, so Columbia and MU is now their home. The couple has a 13-year-old daughter, Alex.

SHARON A. REEDDirector of External Relations

Trulaske College of Business

Mizzou Alumni Association Award for Alumni Relations Excellence

Sharon Reed has been instrumental in many milestones at the Trulaske College of Business — the dedication of Cornell Hall, the

naming of the college, and the centennial, among the most notable. The relationships Reed has built with the college’s alumni and donors has turned possibilities into realities, including the upcoming groundbreaking for the college’s new Applied Learning Center — a new home for experiential, hands on learning for business and accountancy students.

Reed, the 2016 recipient of the Mizzou Alumni Association Award for Alumni Relations Excellence, is the director of external relations for the Trulaske College of Business. Her ability to engage alumni audiences makes her a natural for the award because attention to detail is what makes all the difference when building relationships.

“From a black-tie gala with special appearances by Marching Mizzou and the Golden Girls, to one-on-one meetings held at a donor’s favorite restaurant, Sharon always pays careful attention to the extra details that make all the difference,” her nominator wrote. “She knows our donors’ favorite drinks, the names of their pets, and whether they prefer red or white, meat or vegetarian.”

Reed has spent her career at MU building relationships. She started at the Missouri Training Institute as an administrative assistant in 1997 and moved on to fill the role of continuing education coordinator before transferring to advancement in 2002.

“For someone to take the time to nominate me means a lot. It’s such a humbling experience, knowing how many staff deserve recognition,” Reed said. “It’s definitely one of my prouder moments but I know that it takes a team. Our custodians keep our building looking as nice as the day we moved into Cornell. The staff work together to further our mission. The faculty build upon our stellar reputation. I’m fortunate to have the support of incredible colleagues, bright students and dedicated alumni to work with every day. I’m blessed!”

Reed, a proud MU alumna herself, is also a “Mizzou mom.” Her oldest daughter, Ashley, just completed her freshman year. When Reed’s not connecting Interim Dean Stephen Ferris with supporters or overseeing other alumni engagement opportunities, she’s working her magic at home. On most summer evenings and weekends, you can find Reed and her husband Russell at one of Missouri’s softball fields cheering on her favorite athletes, daughters Allison and Abigail.

Susan Lasley has worked for the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources since 1989, moving among departments, but happy

to see familiar faces for the past 27 years. Lasley is a leader wherever she goes, transforming accounting

processes to make procedures seamless across the 400 fiscal accounts involving research, teaching and extension activities in the division of plant sciences.

Her nominator wrote: The systems implemented have “increased confidence among faculty members about the accuracy of their individual account status and also the overall financial stability of the division.”

Lasley is the type of employee who will volunteer to serve on committees or identify process improvements that save time and resources. She serves as the chair of the division’s space utilization committee and in 2012 coordinated more than $400,000 in renovations to improve the floral design classroom as well as the undergraduate and graduate class labs. The improvements also provide a more inviting public entrance for administrative staff office space.

“I like a challenge and like to see how I might be able to fix it within the university’s guidelines. I’ve established a lot of relationships over the years, so I know where to go and who to talk with,” Lasley said.

Her rapport with faculty and staff has not gone unnoticed. “She has been able to maintain a tremendous esprit de corps

amongst our staff during times of infrequent raises and budget constraints that have prevented us from replacing some faculty and staff who leave or retire.”

Lasley says that while she might be the one receiving the Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Award for Administrative Professionals, she believes the award is really something staff in the entire division should be proud of.

“This award, to me, truly means that everyone in our division does a good job and that our faculty appreciate our support. I hope all of my co-workers know that we are all successful because we have a great team,” Lasley said.

Outside of work, Lasley likes to get outdoors, whether it be to target shoot, kayak or hike with her husband, Ray, and three rescue dogs. She’s joined her son’s Cross Fit gym and also is a proud grandma to Cheyenne.

Hoke Eichelberger, a carpenter in MU Campus Facilities-Planning, Design and Construction, says the best decision he ever made was

coming to work for MU on Feb. 28, 1994. Eichelberger started in Construction Services doing more concrete

work with the fine quality, detailed craftsmanship that “make positive first impressions to the public every day,” his nominator wrote.

A tour of campus includes items that are displayed in Eichelberger’s own works of art — the Thomas Jefferson monument display; the MU cornerstone; and display cases in Anheuser Busch-Natural Resources and Ellis Library.

“I’ve been fortunate to work on some historical projects that have been on campus long before I came and will be here long after I’m gone,” Eichelberger said. “I’m proud to be an MU staff member. I get to work with a lot of great people.”

Eichelberger’s reputation is unrefuted, and departments often request him by name. Co-workers appreciate his “mellow demeanor” and dependability — “If you need a helping hand, ask Hoke. If you need an unbiased viewpoint, ask Hoke. Hoke is the type of person that if you call at 2 a.m. needing help, he will be there.”

Though Eichelberger is receiving the Chancellor’s Staff Award for Crafts/Maintenance, he made sure to point out that his co-worker, Robert Lewis, was also a nominee. He’s proud to accept the award on behalf of all the tradespeople on campus and gives credit to the entire department.

Those who work quietly behind the scenes often go unnoticed, but Eichelberger has been essential to the renovations in Jesse Hall — Mizzou’s front door — the past 22 years and counting. “Those projects posed many challenges and Hoke along with his team were able to complete them on time and with excellent detail to quality. When it comes to entrusting a historically significant structure like Jesse Hall, Hoke is the consistent choice.”

Outside of work, Eichelberger isn’t one to sit idle, either. He likes to fish, hunt and garden when he’s not spending time with his sons, Robbie and Adam; or chasing his grandchildren with his wife of 37 years, Christie.

Doris Eagle is passionate about sight. By day, she is the executive assistant for the department chair of

Ophthalmology; by night, she is planning her next mission trip to Mexico to deliver eyeglasses to those in need or scheduling the next meeting of the Mizzou chapter Lions Club, an international philanthropic organization that has worked for more than 100 years to prevent blindness and restore eyesight.

“I love helping people. Once you have placed glasses on a child’s face and he sees a family member clearly for the first time, you will do whatever it takes to keep going back” on the Lions Club mission trips. “I’m having so much fun working with the Mizzou students on service projects, too. We made 800 sack lunches for Special Olympics on Saturday. We’re helping to build leaders and lifelong volunteers. Isn’t that cool?” Eagle said, her enthusiasm filling the room.

Eagle started the campus chapter after she was approached by the district governor. It was a natural fit for someone in the department of Ophthalmology to lead the effort. Thirty colleges and universities had chapters, and now, thanks to Eagle, Mizzou does, too.

“We’ve recruited 25 members, but we won’t rest until we are 300 to 400 students strong,” she says.

Eagle’s co-workers who nominated her for the Chancellor’s Staff Award-Clerical/Office Assistant, submitted four nominations on her behalf. Her giving spirit follows her wherever she goes. “Doris is a leader who truly cares about her coworkers. … Doris organizes all baby showers, collecting to give flowers. … Doris will come to your house to check on your dog because she cares about animals as much as people.”

Eagle is instrumental in assisting the chair with everything from confidential matters to research to hosting guests. Her work is always on time and top quality. No day is the same and can include anything from communications efforts, including writing a monthly internal newsletter to events planning and donor relations.

Eagle was shocked when an “unplanned meeting with the department chair turned into a surprise announcement of her award. I was bawling. I didn’t tell my mother or son for days because I thought they might take it back. It’s shocking to be recognized for something you love. Doing my job to the best of my ability is rewarding in itself,” Eagle said.

“There are just not enough wonderful words to describe her; she literally captures the minds and hearts of everyone she touches,” wrote a nominee.

Delvin Mellerup’s title is an engineering technician II, but when he describes what he does, you envision a mad scientist working in a lab,

which is even more fitting when you learn that he works in an old fallout shelter in the Psychological Sciences building on Seventh Street.

Mellerup builds equipment for MU Psychological Sciences. He installed fiber optics on a motorcycle helmet that could transmit and receive signals for low-level brain scanning; and he built an olfactory machine used in sense of smell research. One invention he is particularly proud of is a mock MRI machine that is the same size and makes the same sounds as a real one.

“Some autistic children were having difficulties adjusting to the MRI and so it would take longer to do the scans than what they had scheduled. Now these children can get used to what the machine is like before using the real thing, saving time and money,” Mellerup said.

Mellerup has worked in the department for 28 years. He learned to be a Jack of all trades by helping his father around the house and in electronic classes at the Columbia Area Career Center. Because he had a knack for the trade, he stayed an additional year at the Career Center to continue learning and was the first graduate of the advanced program for adults.

His co-workers appreciate his ability to solve problems, from modifying old furniture to make it ergonomic to organizing moves around research projects and creating various instruments to use in research.

The co-worker who nominated him received 38 responses when she put out a message asking for feedback on Mellerup. Some of Mellerup’s nicknames in the department include “Magic Man,” “Superman,” “Dependable Delvin” and “the Wolf,” a reference to a similarly talented problem solver in the movie “Pulp Fiction.”

The department recognizes his talent, writing “We all wonder how we could possibly ever manage without him” and has rewarded him both monetarily and allowing a flexible work schedule when he has been offered other positions at MU. He works four, 10-hour days and figures he’s not going anywhere.

“I like the people I work with and the flexibility they’ve allowed,” he said. “It’s nice to be appreciated. The thank-you’s that I get from job to job mean just as much to me as an award.”

WHO IS THE STAFF ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC)?

The council consists of 16 members elected by MU staff and includes representation from the following groups:

• (A/P) administrative/ professional, which includes exempt nonacademic administrative professional and managerial staff;

• (T/P) technical/ paraprofessional, which includes nonexempt staff and positions requiring specialized knowledge or skills acquired through experience, technical or other training;

• (C/O) clerical/office, which includes office staff designated nonexempt and not considered technical;

• (C/M) crafts/maintenance, which includes nonexempt skilled, semiskilled and apprenticed crafts, trades staff and service staff.

Staff Advisory Council was formed in 1978 by then-Chancellor Barbara Uehling.
