There was the belief that God punished sin immedi- ately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today’s first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, “The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today’s Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declar- ing that she is forgiven because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sin- ners, if only we love enough! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on July 9/10.

House Blessings Parishioners may request a house blessing by contacting the parish office, 702-459-7778. You will be contacted by Deacon John or Deacon Dan.

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 12, 2016 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 12, 2016

I’m writing this the day before we leave on our Mission Trip to Jamaica (June 4—11); by the time YOU read this, we will be back! First of all, thank you for all the generous support you gave to the Jamaican Mission Trip! We received so many items from our parishioners and I know that these donations will have been greatly appreciated by the different persons, places and institutions we visited in Jamaica.

During the summer, it’s always a good time to look at our parish and its programs and ministries and see what changes could and should be made. So, I have two areas now that I would like to bring to your attention. The first is our parish Social Committee. Many of the members have been serving on this committee for over eight years and are ready to hand some of the responsibility over to new people. Most of them are willing to help the new “leaders” of the Social Committee. I think it’s always good, every once in a while, to step back from something one has been involved in (like those serving on this committee for several years) and, at the same time, to welcome “new blood”. The work of the Social Committee is to schedule, plan and run the social/fun events of our parish. Some of these events are the following: annual picnic, family Christmas party, post-Easter Vigil meal; in the past, we have also had an Oktoberfest (want to do that again this year!), a Sock Hop, an International Pot Luck. I’m thinking that normally we would have about four social events during the course of a year — roughly about one every three months. I am hoping that some young parishioners, married or single, might take over this ministry. It would be ideal if three or four younger couples who are friends of each other (or willing to meet ‘new” friends!) would take this on as a group effort. As said above, the long-serving members would be willing to stay on and help out, but are ready to “pass the torch” on to someone new. Is that you? Call Kathy or Yvonne at the office if you are so interested; I will then call together a meeting and we’ll go from there. The second group is one that I tried to start a few months ago, but got so busy with the Capital Campaign that I didn’t give it the attention it needed; and that is, a Young Adults group for Holy Spirit. “Young” is vague, but usually it means those out of high school (about age 18) up to mid 30’s. I think the group should be open to single and married (with children). It’s not meant to be a “Matching” club, but a group of young parishioners who want to get together for social events, spiritual activities and outreach opportunities. There are already a few young adults and some “older adults” who have had great experience in starting up such groups. All I need now is a list of those interested in starting this group and becoming active members. Again, call Kathy or Yvonne at the office if you are so interested; I will then call together a meeting and we’ll go from there. Thanks again for your spiritual and material support for the Mission Trip to Jamaica. In the next few weeks, we will start to publish reflections from each of those who went on the trip this year. Have a great week!

New Mass Times start August 7th! Beginning August 7th, the 8:00 a.m. Mass will change to 7:30 a.m., and the 10:00 a.m. Mass will change to 9:30 a.m.!

Food for the Poor Please remember to bring food items for Casa de Luz each weekend. Boxed and canned items are

most appreciated. When you grocery shop, buy an extra staple item such as peanut butter, jelly, cereals, tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, etc. and leave it in you car to bring with you to Mass.

NEW BEGINNINGS

A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation

New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss

in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails.

• HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ’s saving death and resurrection.

Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778

• HEALING Grief Facilitation -“Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled” (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778

• CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved -“If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member” (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ’s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support.

As our liturgical year winds down and we move into Summer, I want to thank SO many who contribute time and talent to make our music ministry so strong and beautiful! Our Cabaret Night was the most recent example of just how blessed we are in this community - as Fr. Bill said in a recent column, it was an AMAZING night - a special thank you to DON BOWSHER, who not only provided the wonderful venue set-up (lights and sound) but also put together and led the awesome house band - featuring Merril Serra (drums), Leila Hegle (Bass), with Michael Sankuer (sax) and of course, you can’t beat the combination of Don and Jonathan on “keys”. Special thanks to Shawn Kellar (sound) and Kayla Falco (followspot) and Christine Kellar and Desiree Bowsher for putting together an awesome program! And of course, thank you so much to the 18 singers who came forward to perform - what TALENT! I also want to send a special shout out to Sharon Chadwick for always sharing her technical expertise so generously! It has indeed been a wonderful year, and our ministry continues to thrive and grow - Over the next few weeks, I’d like to highlight different aspects of our music ministry! I’ll start with the littlest….SpiritKids is our children’s choir (grades 2-6) who, under the vibrant leadership of Natalie Carson (with much help from Sara Hidalgo, Sal Pacheco, Howie Agster and our fabulous youth musicians - Emily, Eliana and Jennifer) sang at10am once a month throughout the year, and learned about ministry as they led music for our Children’s Sacramental celebrations of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist! They also performed at a wonderful Christmas pageant, and some of them participated in our Easter Vigil celebration! Thank you parents for lending us your kids with such support and enthusiasm - We’re looking forward to continuing to sing God’s praise together next year (watch the bulletin in August/September for our rehearsal schedule) Next up: SpiritSONG/youth music ministry!
