How are volcanoes distributed over the world?

• Most volcanoes lie along plate boundaries.

• Volcanoes mainly occur on destructive plate boundaries (this also includes super volcanoes.)

• Remember that some volcanoes do not appear on either boundary!

Page 11: restless earth, 13b

How are super volcanoes different to shield or composite volcanoes?

• Super volcanoes are flat and surrounded by mountains.

• Shield and composite volcanoes are taller and take more of a cone shape.

• Do you remember the difference between shield and composite?

Page 12: restless earth, 13b

• Normal volcanoes cannot usually be identified from space.

• Super volcanoes are very large volcanoes that they can only be identified from space/air.

• Normal volcanoes eject millions of tones of ash into the air.

• Super volcanoes eject billions of tones of ash into the air.

• Normal volcanoes can cover ash over an entire state.

• Super volcanoes can cover ash almost an entire country.

Other differences include…
