“To Change the Church” - subtitle: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism - is a recently published book by Ross Douthat. I was gifted this book by a concerned parishioner. I have to admit that it was very good reading, appetizing and delicious to my mind. Ross is not only a brilliant writer and has a honed skill in articulating

thoughts and patterns, but also a man of faith with a critical mind and a positive desire to see our Catholic Church prosper and multiply.

Ross creatively weaves the story of the Catholic Church right up to our present days. For the first three-quarters of his book I was surprised to note that he was presenting a history without any mention of God as the primary player, the author who allows us to scribble in His Kingdom. It is only in the final chapters

Fr. Lance’s Letter

that the Holy Spirit shines through as the creator of our Church.

While the two opposing sides: the conservatives and the liberals are given due mention and show their moves and motives, there is the hope that we are doing the work of Christ, open to His inspirations and blessed with authentic Disciples who have guided us through the storms of life.

The Francis era is Douthat’s main focus. His question is whether the church, the ship of Christ is being guided wisely or is floundering without proper direction. We are all part of the Catholic Church and have a huge stake in belonging to the People of God. At every Mass celebrated throughout the world we pray especially for Pope Francis by name. He is the Vicar of Christ. He has been chosen to lead us, guide us and bring us deeper into God’s Kingdom on this earth.

Ross Douthat has an immense resource of material and people in high places, beside his own talents, to author this book “To Change the Church”. Allow me to quote from his last chapter: “So, yes, the story could end with Francis as its hero. But to choose a path that might have only two destinations - hero or heretic - is an act of great and dangerous presumption, even for a pope. Especially for a pope.” (page 207). One might not agree with all that Ross brings out in his book, but it surely opens up a lot of questions about our Catholic history, our Catholic Leadership and our Catholic doctrine. Nevertheless, I personally believe that our loving God gave us His Son and continues to manage us through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit so that we will continue to go out into the whole world, preach and teach, make disciples and baptize people into His Kingdom.

Let us as parishioners of St. Virgil stand together in worship of our God every weekend, in our love of each other and in service to those in need. - Fr. Lance

Faith Formation

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Our Parish Religious Education Program only runs with the help of committed volunteers. We are in need of educators to teach the curriculum in grades kindergarten through 8th grade. There are 12 classes from

September to March. If you have a love of teaching and sharing God's Love with the children, please consider volunteering. One three-hour VIRTUS training is required and provided. There are opportunities to assist or teach at various levels. It's truly a rewarding experience!

Please visit the website for the PREP volunteer form. Thank you! The Thursday evening Bible study is now starting the book of Revelation. This intriguing and strange book is one of the most talked about in the bible. Is it about the 'rapture' and strange monsters? Or is it about the Kingdom established by Christ in His Church, which is intimately connected to His Kingdom in Heaven? Also, what does it have to do with the Mass? Do you want to know what will happen when Jesus comes again? What has happened already and what is happening now? Join us on Thursday evenings at 7 PM in the School Library.

Carnival Results

There are so many to thank for the success of this year’s carnival. We hope that we included everyone who contributed in some way, financially or with man-power. If we missed you, please know that we are deeply appreciative of your help. We know the success of this event is not possible without all your help. Of course, what would a St. Virgil’s Carnival be without rain—again, we had our share. Yet, despite the weather, we had an extraordinarily successful carnival. With all our income and expenses posted for the event, we have earned $67,913.12! Again, a “big top” thank you to all.

Rosary Society for Sight & Sound Trip – “ Jesus”

Don’t miss this new show at Sight & Sound. An Amish style all you can eat lunch is also included before the show. $149 per person. RETURN - Our Children Back to the Church Would you like your child to come back to Jesus, in the Church He founded? We have a small group at our church, St. Virgil's, dealing with this question. Perhaps you read about it in the Jan 18 Beacon? Everyone is welcome to visit our group, examining ways that could possibly help parents bring their loved ones back to the faith. We pray together, share our stories, and support each one’s efforts. We use a book entitled Return, How to Draw Your Children Back to the Church, which recommends steps a parent could take to encourage dialogue and create an environment in which parent and child are comfortable discussing matters of faith. Please, stop in to see if this approach makes sense in your life and offers you hope. Please call the St Virgil Church office, 973-538-1418, and join us on Thursday mornings at 11AM in the School Library.

Coins for Babies Outreach

Please return your "Coins for Babies" bottles. Collection baskets are located at the church entrances. You may also bring them to the parish office (summer hours: 9:00am - 2:00pm). If you didn't get a baby bottle, any container or bag will do.

Your contributions provide new and expectant mothers with the basic necessities for their babies. During the 2017/2018 campaign, we were able to provide Birthright in Dover with 16 diaper bags, 210 boxes of diapers, 111 bottles of baby wash, 182 packs of baby wipes, 102 jars of petroleum jelly, 90 tubes of diaper cream as well as new seasonal clothing, socks, sleepwear, bibs, towels, wash cloths, blankets and crib sheets. We purchase only those items specifically requested and deliver as needed.

A number of very generous and caring parishioners contribute throughout the year. Additional contributions may be brought to the parish office or you can contact Jane Flynn at [email protected]. Knit and crocheted baby blankets and clothing are always appreciated.

Please be as generous as possible to this very worthy cause.

Weekly Reflections

Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist Luke 1:5-17

Luke introduces us to John the Baptist, who is in all four Gospels. John was a cousin of Christ and a prophet whom was chosen as the precursor of Christ, to prepare the way of the Lord, calling people to repentance and baptizing them. Luke reveals that it had been foretold that John “will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.” John the Baptist preached and baptized before Christ made his public appearance and was known to have great humility. The Gospels tell of Christ’s Baptism by John at the River Jordan, the first appearance of Christ assuming His role at the beginning His ministry. And when Christ came to John to be “baptized,” at first John refused, saying that he was “not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals.” (Luke 3:16).

John the Baptist is a man we are called to emulate. So, what was Christ trying to get us to see through this prophet? John tirelessly called his followers to repent, and he said if you have two coats, give one to someone who has none. John continually pointed to Christ as the Messiah. His role in life was to lead others to Christ; he preached good news to the people. Christ is revealing to us that, too, is our job in life, and the only one that really matters.

So, let this be our meditation and challenge for this week. Let us use John as our guide, as our hero who had great courage in fulfilling his role in life and who led others to Christ.

Lord, like John the Baptist, give us the courage to lead others to You!

EVANGELIZATION CORNER

Addressing those who have never heard God’s message of love or those who have forgotten His message begins with a

decision to receive and respond to God's love.

We must first have the desire and a strong and unapologetic commitment to proclaim and to demonstrate His truth in our everyday activities and encounters. Second, we must communicate His love to others, especially young people, in ways that they understand and in ways that captivate their interest. We must communicate God’s message in ways that people can witness and in areas which will capture their attention. While it is essential to communicate God’s message of love, sometimes mere words fail to deliver the message we want or intend to convey.

What we do, our actions and our involvement, will say much about who we are and what we believe.

We can become more involved in your faith by reaching out in the practical ways to those around you -- family, friends, co-workers, neighbors -- and demonstrate the love you have received from God. For as it is written in Matthew 25:36 – “For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me."

There are many volunteer opportunities at St. Virgil’s through which you can demonstrate your faith in a very visible way: The Interfaith Food Pantry and The Haiti Food

Drive The Haiti Water Purification Project Operation Chill Out The St. Virgil’s Clothing Drive Morris View Health Care Center or Sunrise

Assisted Living and Arbor Terrace Volunteers The Prayer Shawl Ministries Bringing Holy Communion to the Sick and

Homebound The Lazarus or the Bereavement Ministries Appalachia Outreach (e.g., building homes for the

poor).

There are many other opportunities that address various social concerns: Star of Bethlehem, Respect Life Ministry, Right to Life, Birth Right, Coins for Babies Outreach and the Knights of Columbus There are also activities to help you to bring people back to faith such as the Return Support Ministry, Pre-Cana Conferences and Baptismal Prep.

May His grace be with each of us as we continue on our journey with Jesus.
