The theme for the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which is celebrated Jan. 18-25, is “Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power.” The theme, taken from Exodus 15:6, points

to the glorious power of God to draw people together in the desire for Christian unity.

Throughout the Biblical narrative of salvation, we find the unrelenting determination of the Lord to form a people whom He could call His own. The formation of such a people, united in a sacred covenant with God, is integral to the Lord’s plan of salvation. The prophets repeatedly remind Israel that their covenant demanded that relationships among its various social groups should be characterized by justice, compassion and mercy.

Reconciliation often demands repentance, reparation and healing of memories.

As Jesus prepared to seal the new covenant in His own blood, His earnest prayer to the Father was that those given to Him by the Father would be one, just as He and the Father were one. When Christians discover their unity in Jesus, they participate in Christ’s glory, with the same glory that He had lived in the Father’s presence before the world existed. Therefore, God’s covenanted people must always strive to be a reconciled community that serves as an effective sign of how to live in justice and peace for all the people of the earth.

Today, the Bible continues to be a source of consolation and liberation, inspiring Christians to address the conditions that

currently undermine the Body of Christ. The Church, like Israel, is called to be a sign and an active agent of reconciliation.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a 100-year history, beginning as an eight-day period of prayer in 1908 called the “Church Unity Octave,”. The octave begins with the feast of the Chair of St. Peter (Jan. 18) and ends on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (Jan. 25). Pope Pius X gave his blessing to the Church Unity Octave and in 1916, Pope Benedict XV extended its observance to the universal Church. Excerpted from the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute.

May we pray for unity among us and all Christian Churches - Fr. Lance

Ministries & Outreaches

It’s time to do some winter cleaning! St. Virgil Appalachia Outreach Team will be conducting a Winter 2018 clothing drive from January 21 through January 27. We will be accepting clothes, bedding, stuffed animals, purses, belts, & shoes. WE CANNOT ACCEPT FURNITURE DONATIONS. Please place ALL items in black plastic garbage bags. The garage will be open from 9am – 4pm on January 21 – 26 and on January 27 from 7:30am –

12:00noon. There will not be an attendant at the garages during those times, so please pile the bags as far back in the garage as you can. If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Drake at [email protected] or 201-513-7667.

Haiti Food Drive

The Annual Haiti Food Drive will continue this weekend. As I’m sure you already know, our format is different, because we were unable to secure warehouse space. As a result, we are asking for monetary donations in lieu of purchasing food items. The group will buy the food at the time of the shipment. Donations can be made in the form of cash or check written to “Saint Virgil Parish” or “Missionaries of the Poor” and left in the box on the table. All details are one the display table next to the altar. The drive will conclude on Sunday, February 4. It benefits

those served at an orphanage, elderly home and AIDS Centre in Cap Haitian, Haiti, by the Missionaries of the Poor. Thank you for your support! If you have any questions, please contact Mike Shields at 862-222-0919.

2017 Outreach Programs

Operation Chillout – Summer Outreach

As a collection partner for Operation Chillout, our parish was asked to collect new baseball caps and tee shirts during July and August of 2017. Although these are popular vacation months for us, we still donated 324 caps and 179 tee shirts. An additional $300 in checks and cash was collected and used to purchase some of these items. Overall, Operation Chillout collected 1,500 new caps and tee shirts from all its collection partners. These items were delivered to 35 New Jersey locations the homeless, primarily veterans, congregate.

Operation Chillout – Winter Outreach

Through your generosity, during our November/December collection, we provided homeless veterans with 89 sets of thermal underwear, 43 pairs of warm gloves, 98 pairs of socks, 24 winter hats, 14 hoodies, plus other miscellaneous clothing items. Cash and check payable to St. Virgil’s totaled $560; these monetary donations were used to purchase clothing. Checks payable to Operation Chillout totaled an additional $825. With this recent onset of very cold weather, your gifts are very much appreciated by those who prefer to stay outdoors.

Rosary Society Outreach

In December, the Rosary Society sponsored a collection of new toys and clothing for the Jersey Battered Women’s Service’s annual Holiday Boutique. We delivered two SUV loads full of educational games and toys, stuffed animals, craft kits, puzzles, coloring books, jewelry, cosmetics, clothing and accessories for women and children. Many other items, too numerous to mention, were also contributed. Handmade items included sweaters, vests, hats, scarves, and mittens. Your generosity helped bring joy to these families who might not otherwise have had a happy holiday.

Coins for Babies

Between last Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, parishioners were asked to collect coins in baby bottles provided by the parish. To date, $2,742.41 has been generously donated. This money is used to purchase much-needed items for Birthright International in Dover: diapers and diaper bags, diaper cream, baby wash, petroleum jelly, crib sheets, and clothing for babies up to 245 months. Enough money was spent at Shop Rite in November to qualify for a free turkey which was donated to the Youth Ministry’s Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Although this collection officially runs between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, many of you still drop off bags of coins and bills for this worthy cause. This enables us to continue providing the necessities and enables Birthright to continue its efforts to encourage women to keep their babies.

Star of Bethlehem Thank Yours

From St. Peter’s Orphanage… Thank you for remembering the children of St. Peter’s Orphanage once again this holiday season. Your donation of a variety of gift cards in the amount of $800 was very helpful to us in fulfilling the needs and wishes of our boys this Christmastime. Your thoughtful gift made it possible for us to accomplish our goal of creating joyful memories from the deserving young men who entrust us with their care. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude, and sincere appreciate for your generous support of our home. May your kindness be rewarded with peace, love and joy throughout the year ahead. Kelly McNamara, LCSW, Executive Director

From Birthright… Many thanks…for your generous donations all year. It is wonderful to be able to contact Jane when we are getting low on supplies and have her deliver them in a day or two. What great service! We are very grateful for what your parish does for Birthright. Anne Kopet, Volunteer

From Family Promise of Morris County… Thank you for your extremely generous donation! Each year, donors like you make it possible for us to provide emergency food and shelter to homeless children and their families. In addition, we move these families from temporary shelter into well-furnished apartments of their own. This past year, we provided emergency shelter to 32 individuals, including 13 children, and 50 households remained housed and self-sufficient thanks to our programs and services that are made possible by your faithful support. Jon K. Thomsen, Associate Executive Director

From Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders on behalf of the Office of Temporary Assistance… …thank you and the congregation of St. Virgil’s Church once again for another generous donation of gift cards to the Office of Temporary Assistance. The gift cards will help those served by the OTA to purchase necessities that their benefits cannot provide. These items include prescription and non-prescription medicines, diapers and baby items, clothing, bedding, small appliances, school supplies, gas cards, personal care products, and household cleaning items. We are truly fortunate that your parish continues to include OTA in this charitable event each year and we wish you and your church’s congregation the very best of the holiday season. Douglas R. Cabana, Freehold Director

From a parishioner… I cannot adequately express the depth of my gratitude to the St. Virgil’s family. As I am no longer able to provide for my own family your very generous gift gave my family a very happy holiday that we would not have had with your kindness. Thank you to the Star of Bethlehem program!

Weekly Reflections

Evangelization Corner

Now that the festivities of the Christmas season have past and we return to ordinary time we may be looking to getting back to the usual day to day tasks. It can also become an easy time for our love and our hearts to grow lukewarm. We need to be reminded and inspired regularly of the great gift God has given us — to be an instrument in leading other people to salvation. Evangelization means bringing people to the truth.

The Gospel last weekend (John 1:35-42) gave us an example of what and how to evangelize. One might say that it presented a "best practice" for us about how evangelization works. The Gospel tells us that in listening to the preaching of John the Baptist, Andrew was led to believe in Jesus and to follow him. Andrew's encounter with Jesus led Andrew to go and bring his brother Peter to Jesus. This is what we call "one-on-one evangelization." We need to tell someone the story of our encounter with Jesus. This is where we need to put our focus -- telling about Jesus and helping others to realize that Jesus is present in our lives and in their lives.

As a parish and as individual Catholics our prime task is to help people come to know Jesus Christ and to recognize his presence in our lives and their lives – that is what it is to evangelize. Evangelization is not a seasonal responsibility. It is something that needs us to be ready every day to open our hearts and our souls to others. We need to continually evangelize and to do this we need to be willing to reach out to those who have fallen away from their faith as well as those who have never heard the Good News of Jesus Christ.

While the Parish is fundamentally a place of encounter with the Lord: in the sacraments, its people, its outreach to the poor, to the alienated and to the unevangelized, evangelization begins with each individual and his or her relationship with Jesus and with the desire to proclaim Jesus Christ is their savior in order to lead others to him.

God bless and may His grace be with each of us as we continue on our journey with Christ. St. Virgil’s Evangelization Ministry

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 1:14-20

Today, in Mark’s Gospel, we continue to follow the accounts of Christ calling His followers to Himself. It was written many years before last week’s Gospel by John and has been relied upon by other Gospels. So, we can see how blended they are. It also shows how well respected the Gospel of Mark is and its credibility through the writing of the four Gospels.

A point of the readings that was not lost by the readers of that time, but is not so obvious to us today, was the manner in which the Apostles were “called” by Jesus. There were many teachers roaming the countryside during this time. A major difference between Christ and other teachers is that Christ chose His Apostles, whereas other teachers were chosen by their “students” who followed them. Christ called the men from their boats and from their jobs, He called them to follow Him, and they responded by leaving their families and occupations to do just that.

To this day Christians have felt chosen, called by the grace of God to their relationship with Christ. The followers we are referring to, all with the exception of John the beloved apostle, were put to death for proclaiming Christ as the Messiah. Following the teaching of John the Baptist the message began with “repent.” Those who were called to follow Christ were not to be hypocrites, like the Pharisees. They were to repent and believe in the Gospel, the Kingdom of God was there.

This is the very beginning of the faith we still proclaim to this day. To be a Christian should begin as a very humbling thing. Many times we turn it all around and make it look like we have taken this upon ourselves. If we remember that we are chosen, it should give us more confidence that whatever God wants us to do, we will be fitted to depend upon Him to complete the good works though us, not because of us. “I have called you by name, you are mine.”

Lord, let us feel Your strength when we strive to accomplish Your will.

Celebrant / Homilist: Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York and Chairman, Committee on Pro-Life Activities. From Thursday, January 18 until Friday, January 26, 2018: Join 9 Days for Life, the U.S. bishops' annual pro-life novena! "Our prayers matter. Every prayer matters, and if you can't start at the beginning, jump in when you can!" — Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York The National Prayer Vigil for Life is an all-night pro-life prayer vigil held on the eve of the March for Life each January.

Over 20,000 pilgrims from across the nation pray through the night for an end to abortion and a greater respect for all human life. It is held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The vigil schedule includes the Opening Mass celebrated in the Great Upper Church. Prayer continues throughout the night with the National Rosary for Life, Night Prayer and Holy Hours for Life. The following morning, the prayer vigil concludes with Morning Prayer, Benediction and the Closing Mass the next morning. The National Prayer Vigil for Life is one small part of the Church's "great prayer for life." It is sponsored by the USCCB Pro-Life Secretariat, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and The Catholic University of America Office of Campus Ministry. “A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world.

Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer.” - Pope St. John Paul II [Go to www.usccb.org and click on 9 days of prayer.]
