James, Joses, Judas, Simon are referred to as brothers,
“brothers” could mean cousins.
Mk 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon?” At the death of Jesus, Mary, the mother of James is identi-
fied. She may be Mary, the wife of Clopus. If this is the
case, then this Mary is the mother of James the Younger
and Joses – all cousins of Jesus who are named in Mk 6:3.
Mk 14:40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses and Salome. Matthew’s account of the death of Jesus also supports
Mary, the mother of James and Joseph, as being the aunt of
Jesus.
Mt 27:56 among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. Taking all of this together we can certainly conclude that
the Scriptures do not contradict the Church teaching that
Mary remained a virgin throughout her life.
Fr. Euk
"They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.... As you sent me into the world, so I send them into the world." In his prayer to God the Father in today's Gospel, Jesus gives an interesting perspective on what it means to follow him. He suggests that--like himself--his dis-ciples have a mission in a world to which they do not be-long. Clearly, their "not belonging" doesn't mean not partici-pating. It doesn't mean being separated from the world or avoiding the world. On the contrary, it means a very real encounter with the world. Jesus came into the world and sincerely engaged people and institutions by teaching, serv-ing, and praying. But all the while, as he told Pontius Pilate, he knew that his kingdom did "not belong to this world" (cf. Jn 18:36). Jesus' work on earth had the greater purpose of serving the kingdom of heaven. As Christians, we should also have our eyes on this eternal kingdom. Through our baptism, we are members of the heavenly realm, and through this sacrament we are also equipped to bring a taste of heaven to earth. Our place in this world is to make connections to God's kingdom. We are not called to ignore the activity of the world and just wait until eternity comes around. Rather, we are called to share the love of God through our acts of service, our dedication to our vocations, and our commitment to making the world a better place for everyone. A proactive approach like this keeps us rooted in our fundamental identity as followers of Jesus. The world may try to distract us from our mission or convince us that it's not important. But we shouldn't buy the lie. After all, we Christians have been "consecrated in truth."
Pastor’s Notes
Scripture Meditation
It is with sadness that Brenda Heffernan, director
of Religious Education, will soon be retiring. Through 18
years of service, Brenda has had the privilege of leading
thousands of St. Veronica’s children through the
sacraments of Penance, Holy Communion and
Confirmation! I am particularly grateful to her for this
outstanding leadership and achievement. She also has led
many adults to the fullness of the faith through our RCIA
program. I hope and pray that the many souls indebted to
her will always remember her in their prayers.
Our new D.R.E. will be Sr. Ann Elizabeth Norton, CR.
We also have another retirement; our music
director, Nancy Condardo. Nancy came on board as
director about three years ago. She helped me to give a
variety of different musical themes to our Masses so that
there would be a variety of choices in the parish. She also
started the children’s choir and enhanced the adult choir at
the 10:30 AM Sunday Mass. Her leadership with the
Christmas Carol Festival was outstanding along with so
many other behind the scenes adjustments. She also
made and left us that beautiful St. Nick’s costume. I
thought we really had a bishop in the room because it was
so realistic. Our new music director is Naomi Capasso.
May God bless them both as they move on to a
more sedate life! And thanks again for making my first
three years here so easy. I am deeply grateful for their
immense contributions to St. Veronica’s!
We know that the Catholic Church teaches that the Mother
of God is a perpetual virgin, but is there a biblical basis for
this? The Scriptures do in fact point to the perpetual
virginity of Mary, but the arguments may not satisfy
all. This analysis will pick your brain, but be patient and do
your best to understand it.
The Gospel of John places Mary, the mother of Jesus by the
cross along with her sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, Jesus’
aunt.
Jn 19:25 But standing by the cross of Jesus were His
mother, and His mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas,
and Mary Magdalene.
The Gospel of Mark indicates that Mary had only one child,
Jesus. The term brethren or brother can also mean cousin
because there is no Hebrew word for cousin. Even today
many nationalities and tribal communities address close
friends as aunts and uncles even though they are not
related.
Mk 3:31 And His mother and His brethren came; and
standing outside they sent to Him and called Him. 32 And
a crowd was sitting about Him; and they said to Him, "Your
mother and Your brethren are outside, asking for You." 33
And He replied, "Who are My mother and My brethren?"
In the following passage, Jesus is referred to as the son of
Mary and not a son of Mary nor one of her sons. While
