Earthquake in Nepal

All Catholics in the Diocese of Trenton are asked to pray

for the victims of the tragic earthquake in Nepal. The

devastation there is almost incomprehensible to us. Any-

one able and willing to help is encouraged to contribute

directly online:www.crs.org or send contributions directly

to: Nepal Earthquake Relief, Catholic Relief Services, P.O.

Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297-0303

"If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you." What a lovely promise! Imagine how satisfying it would be to ask for whatever we wanted and then to see that wish grant-ed. Truly, it would be difficult to think of anyone who would not love to see a promise like this fulfilled. But we know Jesus isn't a genie in a magic lamp sent to indulge every selfish whim. So, what's the catch? Well, as Jesus puts it in today's Gospel, this promise is extended to those who "remain" in him. He uses the beautiful analogy of the vine and the branches to explain what this means. "A branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine ... I am the vine, you are the branches." The idea here is that we are to be connected to Jesus so closely that our very life, our growth, our ac-tions, indeed even our desires come from him as their source. When we are authentically rooted in Christ, and when his words remain in us, then that cannot help but transform us into people who want what Jesus wants. And when we want what he wants, why wouldn't he give it to us? This brings to mind a quote from St. Alphonsus Liguori. "In cold and heat, in rain and wind," said this wise doctor of the church, "the soul united to God says: 'I want it to be warm, to be cold, windy, to rain, because God wills it.'" In a similar vein, another doctor of the church, St. Therese of Lisieux, said that God has "always given me what I've desired, or rather, He's made me desire what He wanted to give me." This is the secret to constant con-tentment. No matter what life brings, when we truly de-sire to embrace God's will, we are bound to be happy.

Pastor’s Notes

Scripture Meditation

Jesus describes our relationship with Him like branches

on a vine. Special care is needed if vines are to produce

good fruit. When vines mature, they have two kinds of

branches. The non-fruit bearing branches which are

worthless because they are soft and cannot be used in

ritual fires in the temple. They represent those who

refuse to listen to Jesus. This wood is generally burned

in a barn fire which is symbolic of hell.

The fruit bearing vines are valuable because they are

useful in worship of God, especially the wine produced

from them. But why does the vine dresser prune these

branches and make the vines "weep?" If they are not

pruned, the strength of the vine is wasted because they

produce a lower quality of wine. The pruned vines

represent the people of God who suffer sorrows in this

life by ridicule or persecutions, yet remain loyal to God’s

commandments. They are purified in these sufferings

and nourished by Jesus, their supernatural

Source. These fruit-bearing branches represent the

saints.

Obedience to Jesus’ Word is the key to a special unity

between God and man. Characteristic of this unity is the

ability to think and act like God. Prayers to God will

never be denied by God because, to the obedient, they

are always God’s will. God will abide in anyone who is

willing to encounter Jesus – but only on His terms. The

mission of Christ and the action of the Holy Spirit are

brought to fruition in the true followers of the Church.

May is a special month in the Church which is dedicated

to the Blessed Mother. For Mary, receiving the

Eucharist, when the Apostles offered Mass, must have

been a welcoming once again of the unison of her

Immaculate Heart with the Sacred Heart of her

Son. Mary could relive what she and He had

experienced at the Cross, the supreme act of love and

obedience of her son to save us from our sins. She also

could relive in obedience to Jesus’ own command to us

to “Do this in remembrance of Me.” All that Christ did

with regard to His mother for our sake at the Cross is

also present. To her He gave the beloved disciple and by

extension each of us: “Behold, your son!” To each of us

He also says “Behold your mother!” Mary is present,

with the Church and, as the mother of the Church, at

each of our celebrations of the Eucharist. The Church

and the Eucharist are inseparably united and the same

can be said of Mary and the Eucharist. During this

month of May let us ask God to help us to understand

how important is the Sunday Mass. Let us also pray that

we come to understand that even Mary beacons us to

unite ourselves to the Holy Eucharist.

Fr. Euk
