The voice from the cloud says, “Listen to him.” Where and how do you listen to the Lord?

Fr. Del’s Points to Ponder Lent is about many things: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving come to mind immediately. Giving up and doing extra may come to mind next when considering the meaning of Lent. Liturgically, everything we do during these forty days finds its culmination in celebrating the Easter Vigil. Lent is about getting ready.

At the heart of our observance is a deeper realization that God’s mercy is always an invitation to each of us from God. We do not earn forgiveness from God, nor do we merit mercy in such a way that God pays us back for being sorry. Forgiveness from God is a perpetual offer given to us just for the taking when we open our hearts to receive this too-good-to-be-true gift.

Please seriously consider celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Lent as a part of your Lenten observance. For many people there is a fear of celebrating the Sacrament due to lingering memories of being forced to “go to Confession” as a sort of punishment for sinning. For others, there is apprehension because “it’s been so long that I’m not sure what to do.” For still others there is a quiet voice that proclaims “I don’t need to go, I can say I’m sorry to God any time I want.”

These responses all have an element of truth. We would recognize today that celebrating the Sacrament out of mere routine, or a punishment, is not helpful. If it’s been awhile since celebrating the Sacrament, it is up to the priest to lead you through the rite, not the penitent. And, yes, we can say that we are sorry to God any time we feel moved.

The reality is that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is so much more than any of these responses. The Sacrament is a celebration of God’s mercy that restores us to full relationship with God and one another. There is both a vertical (God) and horizontal (other people) dimension of right relationship that the Sacrament celebrates. We can not do this on our own.

This year, you will note that we have expanded times to celebrate the Sacrament during the Lenten Season. The Regional Penance Service will have nine confessors. Parents, please assure that you make time for your children to celebrate the Sacrament — please go with them as an example to them.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is that time that we celebrate God’s mercy and forgiveness, offered to us at all times whenever we choose to accept this gift.

As always we are trying to balance getting high quality work with doing it at the lowest possible cost – discounts or donations of materials and labor are especially welcome. • Flooring including installation of carpet tile, large format (6 x 6 to 12 x 12) ceramic tile and VCT.

Sunday, March 1, 2020Our Own Deserts

Today’s Readings: Genesis 2:7–9; 3:1–7; Psalm 51:3–4, 5–6, 12–13, 17; Romans 5:12–19 or 5:12, 17–19; Matthew 4:1–11. Each reading today keeps us mindful of our need for God. After breathing life into human beings, God placed them in a rich, fertile garden where all their needs were met. Enticed by the possibility that they might exceed their limi-tations, the man and woman seize the chance to decide for themselves what will make them safe and happy.

St. Paul discusses how sin spread from the first human beings to each new generation. Everyone experiences evil in some form, and because all of us sin, we participate in and extend the reach of evil. Sin is thus inescapable, as inescap-able as its ultimate repercussion, death. Into the midst of our

hopeless situation comes God’s grace, “the gracious gift” of Jesus Christ.

Jesus models perfect trust and obedience. There in the desert he humbly depends upon God’s word rather than his arguments as he withstands the devil’s attempts to make him meet his needs, test God’s love, and claim lordship over the world without first laying down his life for it.

These temptations are particular to Jesus. We face our trials and temptations. The readings remind us that we can-not overcome them by ourselves. Lent is thus a time when we not only try to resist sin, we discover how much we need God to help us.

They are to be a just and compassion-ate community, a people worthy of his name. God’s expecta-tions as we hear them in the Gospel are not substantially different. Those whom God brings into his kingdom have set themselves apart by loving other people in concrete ways. Choose a Corporal Work of Mercy to perform this week. Today’s Readings: Leviticus 19:1–2, 11–18; Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 15; Matthew 25:31–46.

Tuesday, March 3Powerful WordsWhen God speaks, things change. When our prayer is guided by the spirit of Christ, our words become part of God’s life-changing action in the world. Because we do not always know how to pray, Jesus tells us to put God’s Kingdom first, to ask God to meet our basic needs, and to make us more like God, who is the very source of forgiveness and who triumphs over evil. Practice the life-changing mercy of God by praying for someone you are struggling to forgive. Today’s Readings: Isaiah 55:10–11; Psalm 34:4–5, 6–7, 16–17, 18–19; Matthew 6:7–15.

Wednesday, March 4ResistanceJonah preached to foreigners, yet the entire people accepted his prophetic warning and repented. Jesus, by contrast, is among his own people, and they are rejecting him and all he embodies. Sometimes we simply do not want to repent. God calls us to change in some way, but we resist. We ask for more time, we want proof that we have to change, or we tell ourselves that God isn’t challenging us after all. What part of ourselves most needs to change? Today turn that part of yourself over to God. Today’s Readings: Jonah 3:1–10; Psalm 51:3–4, 12–13, 18–19; Luke 11:29–32.

Thursday, March 5Ask, Seek, KnockEsther prays for the protection of her people, who had just been sentenced to a collective death. Her grief-filled prayer is fervent and trusting, and God answers it. Esther models the prayer Jesus urges us to offer. We are to pray with hope, com-passion, and persistence. God is eager to share his goodness with us. If it seems that God is not answering your prayers, ask him why. Today’s Readings: Esther C:12, 14–16, 23–25; Psalm 138:1–2ab, 2cde–3, 7c–8; Matthew 7:7–12.

Friday, March 6Worship and JusticeEzekiel addresses complaints that God is punishing people for the sins of their ancestors. The prophet responds that the people themselves have sinned. These sins, enumerated right before this passage, include acts of injustice. The people have not only failed to worship God, they have also failed to care for their neighbor. Worship and justice are inseparable, as we learn again in the Gospel passage. What gift of justice or reconciliation can you offer to God this Sunday? Today’s Readings: Ezekiel 18:21–28; Psalm 130:1–2, 3–4, 5–7a, 7bc–8; Matthew 5:20–26.

Saturday, March 7Sts. Perpetua and FelicityPerpetua and Felicity were killed in the early third century because they had become Christians. Despite the violence that awaited them, both women and their companions remained steadfast in their new faith. By their martyrdom, they became “sacred to the Lord.” Their courageous witness in the face of persecution inspired others to accept Christianity. Watch for the chance to be a courageous wit-ness by responding with loving kindness toward someone who seems undeserving. Today’s Readings: Deuteronomy 26:16–19; Psalm 119:1–2, 4–5, 7–8; Matthew 5:43–48.


COOKING FOR THE FAMILY...Students learn 8 basic cooking skills, create a full meal to enjoy in class, get fresh produce to take home each class, and receive a cooking kit to take home at the end of the series. Each recipe learned features a healthy meal that can feed a family of 4 for under $10.00! Volunteers for this program assist the students and Chef Instructor with setting up, clean up and cooking during the cooking classes. A meal is provided at the end of each class for volunteers as well. No cooking experience is necessary.

Mass Plus – A New Parish Learning Opportunity. The most important thing we do as a parish, Fr. Del always reminds us, is Sunday Mass. You know how Mass goes, what to do or say. But what is happening on a deeper level? How can you more deeply pray the Mass, and not just attend it?

This school year the Faith Formation Commission is offering a monthly event called Mass Plus – an addition to 9:30 or 11:30 a.m. Mass. Stay after 9:30 or come early for 11:30 a.m., or come back if you’ve been to 4:00 or 8:00 p.m.! Adults and kids 4th grade & up start together, then adults stay with Emily Besl and children go with Bill Frantz to explore the meaning of the Mass and why we do the things we do.

MEET OUR ELECT!St. Veronica Parish welcomes these new members who will be initiated into Christ and the Church with the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at this year’s Easter Vigil. On the 1st Sunday of Lent, at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, they each sign their name in the Book of the Elect, showing their response to God’s call. At the Rite of Election at the cathedral that afternoon, they are “chosen” (elected) for baptism this year. Please keep them in your prayers during Lent!

I’m from Cincinnati. My husband Dave Ehrhardt and I enrolled our son Jeffrey in St. Veronica when he was in pre-school, and we have been coming to church here for 5 years now.

I am looking forward to being baptized, becoming part of this community, and being closer to God. Preparing for baptism and participating in the catechumenate sessions has been an unforgettable experience and I have really enjoyed becoming part of the parish and meeting new people.

I enjoy photography, spending time with my son, and helping others.

I’m originally from California and moved here in 1996. I was not raised in any specific religion so I have searched on my own.

Our son Christopher, age 8, has been going to St. Veronica since kindergarten and we started attending church as a family last year. Christopher has now been baptized as a Catholic, and my husband Tim was just received into the Catholic Church here. I’m looking forward to practicing the sacraments, and being a member of the parish with so many fellow parents of our son's friends. The catechumenate meetings have been informative, enjoyable, and have really helped my faith grow.

I'm an IT director at a local Software developer. I enjoy teaching my son the craft of video gaming, spending time with family and friends, and singing.

I am 11 years old and am in the 6th grade at Clermont Northeastern Middle School.

I’ve been going to St. Veronica on Sundays for about a year and I think it is a friendly parish. I have enjoyed getting ready for baptism and learning more about the faith. I’m really looking forward to becoming Catholic and being able to receive the sacraments with my family.

I love drawing, video games, reading, and animals. I just adopted a puppy and named him Barry.

I’m from Pearl, Mississippi, and I was raised Baptist. My husband Greg Frede went to school at St. Veronica and we have been coming to church here for about a year.

I’m looking forward to being able to take communion with the rest of the church and being able to delve into the religion and learn more. I’ve really enjoyed the fellowship I have gained in this process.

I work as a Payables Clerk for Performance Auto Group, and I like roller skating, karaoke, and relaxing at home with our dog and two cats.

I am in 6th grade at St. Veronica - this is my first year at the school. My family includes my Mom and Dad, two older sisters, two younger twin brothers, a dog, and a bearded dragon.

I have grown up in a Christian home and started my formal religious journey about a year ago, though I have attended Mass at St. Veronica from time to time for several years. I have enjoyed learning about Jesus and look forward to being closer to God.

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled on Sundays, either at Mass or at 12:30 p.m. Expectant parents should plan on attending the Baptismal Preparation Program, held six times a year. Call the Parish Office to schedule the Baptism and Preparation Program. The Sacrament of Baptism for adults and school age children is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, along with the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation occurs in steps and stages throughout the year with weekly meetings on Sunday after 9:30 a.m. Mass. Call Emily Besl at 688-3143, or the Parish Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING The Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation or Confession) is celebrated each Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m., or by appointment with the pastor. Seasonal Penance Services are also celebrated. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick may be scheduled by calling the pastor before a medical procedure, or in the event of a serious illness, or after each Mass on the fifth Sunday of the month. When hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office; this is the only way we know if a parishioner has been hospitalized. In case of medical emergency or death, call the Parish Office and follow prompts.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled by calling the pastor or deacon to begin the process of marriage preparation, at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. A date for the wedding is set only after meeting with the pastor or deacon. Discernment for the Sacrament of Orders (ordination to the Priesthood and Diaconate) is facilitated by contacting the pastor or Vocation Director of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Those interested in pursuing Religious Life may also make these contacts.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Religious Education Program (R.E.P.) for children (ages 3 years through 8th Grade) begins each year in September and ends in May. Call Theresa Kearney, Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation, or Barb Farwick, Administrative Assistant, at 688-3155 for more information.
