Partners in the Promise As a society, during these days we can be in some-

thing of a "postpartum" depression. Our celebrations of Christmas and the New Year are over, and after today many of us will put away the decorations and the last visible remnants of the celebrations of the past weeks. The apostle Paul today uses the expression "partners in the promise." This is an uplifting phrase for us to reflect upon, and to think of as our own calling in these days following the birth of the Lord. What is this promise? We can find it in the gifts the magi bring: it is a promise of being a royal priesthood (gold), a holy nation (frankincense), a people set apart for self-giving (myrrh). We find more of the promise in Isaiah--a light shines upon us! In the psalm we know a promise of a world of flowering justice, profound peace, the poor rescued, pity for the lowly and the poor. This is the promise; and one of the best ways for us to lift ourselves out of any possi-ble low spirits we may be suffering is to live out our part-nership in this promise each and every day. We Pray for the Deceased

Please pray for these members of our parish family who passed away recently:

Roberto Araiza, Gia Dacanay,

Eduardo David, Jesus Ledesma,

Juan Jose Ramirez.

May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

Today’s Scripture First Reading--Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The Lord shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6).

Psalm -- Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Ps72). Second Reading -- The Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6).

Gospel -- Magi from the east arrived, looking for the new-born king of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12).

You have the right to embrace your spirituality. If faith is a part of your life, express it in ways that seem

appropriate to you. Allow yourself to be around people who understand and support your religious beliefs.

St. Justin Martyr Parish Bereavement Support Group

On Thursday, January 15 St. Justin Martyr Church will begin a new Bereavement Support Group (in ENGLISH) for those among us who need companionship and guidance while working through the death of a loved one. We will meet on six Thursdays, from 2-4 p.m. in the Parish Center. This confi-dential group looks forward to supporting you during this dif-ficult time.

Please contact Jo Ann Davis, Parish Coordinator at 714-774-2595, ext. 106 if you are interested in being part of this Be-

reavement Support Group session.

Treasures from our Tradition Epiphany celebrates the wake-up calls of life, the

showings of God's majesty and power in the person of Jesus. The feast alerts us to look for signs of the Lord's grace and action in our lives today. In this context, the call of the Second Vatican Council to reform the sacra-mental life of the Church, including our pattern of care for the sick, is indeed a holy awakening.

Prior to the 1960s, our care for the sick had collapsed in the popular imagination into something everyone called "last rites." An immensely complicated ritual, with anointing accompanied by quickly muttered Latin prayers, was enacted for a marginally conscious person at "death's door." By the time a priest was called, the sick person might not be able to receive viaticum, or derive much personal benefit from the ritual. The healing effects of the sacrament, investing suffering with the dignity of a link to Christ's cross, and the immense assurance of for-giveness for a person reviewing the life journey, were hidden. Suddenly, an epiphany swept through the Church, and the way we care for the sick was utterly transformed. It took several centuries, however, for the Church to reach that moment of renewal. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Have you considered the ministry of being a lector at our parish?

A lector’s proclamation of the Word of God can evoke faith in others by demonstrating one’s own faith. Lectors pub-licly read Scripture and proclaim the Word at Sunday and weekday Masses and other liturgies. More men and women are needed to become a part of this ministry at St. Justin, which is truly a service to the Church.

If you are interested, please fill out a discernment form available online (go to saintjustin.org > Ministries > Worship > Lectors) and in the Parish Office. You may choose the Mass times at which you would be willing to serve. Lectors must have received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation, and if married, be married in the Catholic Church. Fr. Ven Amidar will be reviewing the forms received and speaking to those who are interested. Training will be provided in January-February.

Do you know a parishioner that you think would be a good lector? Why not suggest it to them!

Peace and Justice corner Injure not the poor because they are poor, nor crush the needy at

the gate; for the Lord will defend their cause, and will plunder the lives of those who plunder them. (Proverbs 22: 22-23)

Postage Stamps Needed Deacon Ray is collecting USED postage stamps throughout the

year. Commemorative and foreign stamps are especially desirable. Stamp collections are a true treasure also. He sends the stamps to a group of sisters in Minnesota who process and sell them, and their pro-ceeds are given the their missions in Chile. There must be a 1/4” margin around the stamp to help with ease of removal and maintain-ing stamp value. If it is on a postcard, please leave the postcard intact (sometimes the postcards have more value than the stamp.) Please put cancelled stamps in an envelope for Deacon Ray and drop them in the collection basket or the Parish Office.

¿Cómo busco a Dios?

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
