Third Sunday of Easter Acts 2:14,22-28; 1 Peter 1:17-21; Luke 24:13-35

Take a look around the church and see the other people with whom you are worshiping – we as Jesus’ followers come in a variety of ages and experiences, races and languages. If you look below the surface, you might find even greater differences – such as various depths of understanding of Jesus, and varying abilities to see Jesus in their daily lives. Today’s readings give us a variety of ways to understand Jesus – the resurrected Lord.

In our readings today, we hear of what could be seen as competing images of Jesus: both the long-

awaited Messiah, ready to take the throne of David, and as the unblemished lamb who shed his blood for our sake. In Acts, Peter says that Jesus was delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God to suffer cruci-fixion and a horrible death to win our salvation – then to rise from the dead to restore our life, and ascend into heaven where he now sits at the right hand of the Father.

Turning to the Gospel, we see a compassionate and loving Jesus, walking with two of his despondent

disciples as they describe their state of mind and the events of the past days. Jesus accepts them where they are, and helps them to understand that he is the fulfillment of the prophets in the Hebrew Scriptures. Then Je-sus fully revealed himself through the breaking of the bread.

Jesus’ great love for the two disciples shines forth in his patience and understanding. Jesus brings them

around in the way that they need to be taught – with a lengthy explanation of Scripture and a reminder of his actions during the Last Supper. Most importantly, Jesus shows a willingness to walk with the disciples, to let them tell their own story, and to teach them at their level, in the way that they will best understand.

Let us take some time today to ponder Christ’s passion, death and resurrection by which we are

saved and redeemed, and given the promise and hope of eternal life. Let’s focus on appreciating more fully God’s gift of salvation, and try to live more fully in the power of the Resurrection so we can give a more faithful witness to the Gospel. Let’s also do our best to imitate the actions of Jesus in today’s Gospel by being willing to walk along with people we encounter in our daily lives – especially making an effort to listen to their stories with patience and gentleness. We just might be able to help them better understand what Jesus means in their lives.

At the same time, let us walk with open hearts and minds, knowing that for us, the people we encoun-

ter might be Jesus, walking with us to give us hope and to lead us on our way. I thank you for joining us in prayer today and I pray that your Easter journey continue to be a faith-

filled journey for yourself and those with whom you encounter. Father Tony

Our Spiritual “Humor” for the Week (The Risen Lord is watching)_Up at the head table in the cafeteria, one of the nuns had placed a big bowl of bright red, fresh, juicy apples. Beside the bowl, she placed a note which read, "Take only one. Remember, Jesus is watching." At the other end of the table was a bowl full of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, still warm from the oven. Beside the bowl was a little note scrawled in a child's handwriting which read, "Take all you want. Jesus is watching the apples!"

A couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were excessively mischievous. They were always getting into trouble and their parents knew that if any mischief occurred in their neighborhood their sons were probably involved. The boys’ mother heard that a priest in the downtown parish had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The pastor agreed, but asked to see them individually. So the mother sent her 8-year-old first, in the morning, and fixed the appointment of the older boy with the priest in the afternoon. The priest, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, “Where is God?” The boy’s mouth dropped open and he made no response. So the priest repeated the question in an even sterner tone, “Where is God!!?” Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy’s face and bellowed, “WHERE IS GOD!?” The boy screamed and ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door be-hind him. When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, “What happened?” The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, “We are in BIG trouble this time, Dave. God is missing - and they think WE did it!”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Some monks and nuns trace their community ori-gins back a thousand years or so, before it became cus-tomary to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in tabernacles. In their rules of life, which evolved from the lifestyle and prayer of their predecessors, the core experience of Christ’s presence is at the altar itself, and in the symbol of assembly for prayer. To this day, when the monks or nuns file into their church in procession, they march two by two, and then bow profoundly to the altar before turning and bowing in reverence toward the brother or sister at their side. It is probably more difficult, in prac-tice, to revere the presence of Christ in a person who irks you by taking the car keys, shirking a work duty, or burning the toast! We can trace in these religious orders’ enduring customs the ancient appreciation for the altar as the cen-ter of the church building, and of the community of the faithful as the Body of Christ. Usually, a monastery to-day will reserve the Blessed Sacrament in some quiet corner of the monastic church, in a fairly small space, more suitable for private prayer than for the gathering of the whole community. In a cloister, the architecture may allow the public limited access to this space. Liturgical law tells us, in both monasteries and parish churches, that there is no need for more than a few hosts in the place of reservation, just enough for viaticum, the “food for the journey” that is the final sacramental celebration for a dying Christian. —Rev. ON THE ROAD One central metaphor employed to describe the Christian life is a journey. In today’s second reading, Peter addresses the early Christian community: “Conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your so-journing” (1 Peter 1:17). When we think of a journey, we normally think of some kind of movement from point A to point B. The Christian journey, begun in the waters of baptism (point A) has as its ultimate destination eternal life with God in heaven (point B). Unfortunately we find ourselves on all kinds of detours along the way. Because of sin, we make foolish turns and sometimes seem una-ble to detect the presence of the Lord. Today’s story of the two disciples on their way to Emmaus illustrates for us the fact that, even when we are dejected or on one of our many detours, the Lord is there, walking right beside us.
