Each time we partake of it we need to consider what it represents. Our intention today is to take a closer look at what the scriptures say concerning it in order to help us partake of it in a way that is pleasing to God. The first thing we will notice is that it was instituted by the Son of God just before His death on the cross.

The Lord’s Supper

•Partaking of the Lord’s Supper is something that we should not do simply out of habit.

• Each time we partake of it we need to consider what it represents.

•Our intention today is to take a closer look at what the scriptures say concerning it in order to help us partake of it in a way that is pleasing to God.

• The first thing we will notice is that it was instituted by the Son of God just before His death on the cross.

The Lord’s Supper

• The account of Jesus instituting the Lord’s Supper is found in Matthew, Mark and Luke

•Mt 26:17 ¶ Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?"

• 18 And He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples."'"

The Lord’s Supper

• 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

• These events took place on the Thursday evening before Jesus was crucified.

•We see a very important point made by Matthew.

•He says it was the 1st day of the feast of unleavened bread.

• This will be important when it comes to determining what type of bread to use when partaking of the Lord’s Supper.

The Lord’s Supper

•During this feast only unleavened bread was to be eaten.

• Ex 12:18 'In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.

• 19 'For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land.

• 20 'You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.'"

The Lord’s Supper

• The feast unleavened bread was a reminder to the Jews of how they left Egypt in haste.

• Since this was the case they did not have time to allow the dough their bread was made of to rise before cooking it.

• This unleavened bread would have been the only type of bread Jesus would have used during this feast.

•Mt 26:20 When it was evening, he sat at table with the twelve disciples;

• 21 and as they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me."

The Lord’s Supper

• 22 And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after another, "Is it I, Lord?"

• 23 He answered, "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me.

• 24 The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born."

• 25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, "Is it I, Master?" He said to him, "You have said so."

The Lord’s Supper

• 26 ¶ Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."

• 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you;

• 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

• 29 I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."

The Lord’s Supper

•While they were eating, Jesus took the unleavened bread and blessed it.

• Jesus blessing it was the same thing as giving thanks to God for it. Luke says He gave thanks.

• In other words, He prayed to God thanking Him for the bread.

•He then broke it apart and distributed it to each of his disciples.

•He then explains to them what this bread represents.

The Lord’s Supper

• It represents His body that was going to offered on the cross the next day for the sins of all mankind.

• Jesus then tells them all to drink of the “fruit of the vine” which is grape juice.

•He says this grape juice represents the blood He would shed on that cross so that man might be able to have forgiveness of sins.

The Lord’s Supper

• From Matthew’s account we learn:• It was instituted by Christ• Its elements were unleavened bread and grape juice• It represented the sacrifice He would make on the

cross.

• From Luke’s account we learn why Jesus wanted his disciples to partake of the Supper.

The Lord’s Supper

• Lu 22:19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.“

• There is a purpose behind us partaking of the Lord’s Supper.

• Jesus wants this done so Christians would remember His sacrifice on the cross.

The Lord’s Supper

•Around the world a lot of emphasis is placed on celebrating and remembering the birth of Jesus about which the Bible says nothing.

•But it seems very little emphasis is placed on remembering His death by partaking of the Supper that He commanded to be done.

•What a shame it is when we put more emphasis on the traditions of men rather than the commands of God.

•Paul addresses the subject of the Lord’s Supper with the Church at Corinth.

The Lord’s Supper

•Many of the Corinthian’s had been guilty of turning the Lord’s Supper into a drunken feast.

•Paul corrects this sin by telling them the proper way to partake of it.

•1Co 11:23 ¶ For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;

• 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

The Lord’s Supper

• 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

• 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.

•Paul also says we are to do this in remembrance of Christ and His death

•He also says as often as we eat it (which means every time we eat it) we proclaim the Lord’s death.

The Lord’s Supper

•As we eat the bread that represents His body and drink the grape juice that represents His blood we are publicly proclaiming our faith in the fact that our Lord and Savior died for our sins on the cross.

• The last part of verse 26 tells us how long Christians are to continue to partake of the Lord’s Supper.• “till He comes”

• This is to be done continually by the members of His Church until Christ comes again!

•Next Paul addresses our frame of mind while partaking of it.

The Lord’s Supper

•1Co 11:27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

• 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

• 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

The Lord’s Supper

• 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

• 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

• 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

The Lord’s Supper

•33 Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.

• 34 But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.

The Lord’s Supper

• The Corinthians had been guilty of partaking in an unworthy manner.

• They were treating the Lord’s Supper as a common meal

•By treating as a common meal they were not discerning the Lord’s body.

• They were not thinking about what the fruit of the vine and unleavened bread represented.

• The blood and body of Christ.

•We need to consider what these emblems represent when we partake of the Lord’s supper as well

Page 11: The Lord’s Supper · 2019-11-17 · The Lord’s Supper The Lord’s Supper •Partaking of the Lord’s Supper is something that we should not do simply out of habit. •Each time

The Lord’s Supper

•1Co 11:20 Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper.

• 21 For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk.

• 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.

•What a sad situation to see Christians treating the Lord’s Supper in such a way.

The Lord’s Supper

• They were not eating it as a group

• Some were not eating it at all

•Others were becoming drunk while partaking.

• They were treating the Lord’s Supper as a frivolous and common thing.

• It was their attitude towards the Lord’s Supper that made them do it unworthily.

• If we are going to partake of it in a worthy manner then we must approach it with the proper attitude.

•We must center our minds on what it represents

The Lord’s Supper

•Our thoughts must be on what it represents and the terrible price that Jesus paid for our sins.

•God wants us to remember these things.

• Finally lets look at when it was partaken of by the early Church.

• There is only one scripture in the New Testament that tells us when the Church observed the Lord’s Supper.

• In Acts 20 Paul has started his journey back to Jerusalem. He was in a hurry because he wanted to be there by the day of Pentecost.

The Lord’s Supper•Although he was in a hurry he spent 7 days in Troas.

• I believe it was so he could address that congregation and partake of the Lord’s Supper with them on the 1st day of the week.

•Ac 20:6 But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

• 7 ¶ Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.

The Lord’s Supper

• “Break bread” is talking about eating the Lord’s Supper.

•Remember what Jesus did when He instituted it? He broke the bread.

•Notice here what their purpose was for gathering on the first day of the week.• the disciples came together to break bread

• They gathered to partake of the Lord’s Supper on Sunday.

• If this could have been done any other day then surely they would have in order for Paul to get on his way.

The Lord’s Supper

•No where in the scriptures does it say this was done once a month, once a quarter or once a year.

• It says they did this on the first day of the week.

• If God had wanted this done monthly, quarterly or yearly He would have told us.

• Instead He wanted it done weekly and told us what day of the week to do it on.

• Its strange how many churches misunderstand this but they won’t miss a single Sunday when it comes to taking up a collection.

The Lord’s Supper

•1Co 16:2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.

• That doesn’t say every first day of the week either.

•But many will pass the plate multiple times every Sunday.

• This one example of the Apostle Paul and the Christians at Troas partaking of the Lord’s Supper on the 1st day of the week is all we need.

•Doing it any other day or with any other regularity is simply going beyond what is written

Conclusion

•Hopefully this lesson has helped us understand just what the Lord’s Supper is and why we partake of it.

•We absolutely do not want to partake of it simply out of habit

• It has a purpose and plan for it’s observance revealed to us in the scriptures

•We need to remember:• It was instituted by Christ• The unleavened bread represents His body that was

crucified for our sins• The grape juice represents His blood that was shed on

the cross for our sins•We need to partake of it in a worthy manner by

focusing our minds on His sacrifice.• It is to be done on every first day of the week and only
