The Blessing of our Homes: What Is the Significance of the Chalk and the Magi?

Chalk, a substance made of common elements of the earth, is used by teachers to instruct students and by children in their games and play. We use chalk in this ser-vice as an ordinary substance put to holy use. Further, chalk will not permanently mar the dwelling. As its image fades from view over time, those who participated in its original placement will remember it and the purpose for which it was intend-ed. In doing so, they may rededicate themselves to that purpose. After a year pass-es and a new Epiphany arrives, they will have the opportunity once again to cele-brate the themes of this season and once again to seek God's blessing on their homes and on those who come and go through the home. Traditionally we remem-ber the traditional names of the Magi as Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar — Dur-ing the chalking ceremony, the first letters of these three names — C, M, B — are inscribed on the door frame. Some suggest the C M B may also stand for "Christus Mansionem Benedicat," meaning " May Chr ist bless this dwelling." These letters are inscribed between the numbers of the year of the ceremony. Thus, as people are given the opportunity to participate in the chalking of the door, they will inscribe one or more of the symbols: 20 C M B 18 The symbols are usually written on the upper horizontal piece of the door frame of the front entrance to a home or hospital room; but if younger children or people in wheelchairs partici-pate, encourage them to place the symbols anywhere on the door frame they can comfortably reach. (http://www.carmelites.net/news/chalking-door-2017-epiphany-house-blessing/)

Prayer for the Blessing of the homes:

Using the blessed chalk write 20 + C + M + B + 18 on the lintel of your front door (front porch step or other convenient location) while saying together:

The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, followed the star of God’s Son who became human two thousand and eighteen years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen.

Leader: Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and for ever. Amen.

Leslie O’Bryan Foundation: Leslie

O’Bryan provided our Parish the money to build our church in 1966. Upon his death he established a foundation. In December we were surprised to receive from his foun-dation a check for $5,000. In speaking with his daughter, Fr. Greg found out that it would be good to continue support of the churches he helped found. At the end of December we received a second check for the same amount. Please remember in your prayers Mr. Leslie O’Bryan and his family living and dead for their great generosity and thoughtfulness.
