Communion for Sick and Homebound Parishioners St. Rita ministers provide Communion home visits. Contact the Parish Office (355.1292) or Jill Muhs • 355.9810 • [email protected].

Anointing of the Sick Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord’s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest, sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH P-3 REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Parishioners, The Old Testament reading today takes us back to the time of Ezra and Nehemiah, “The priests of the restoration.” The people are portrayed in tears as they hear, for the first time since their exile, a reading of the Law of Moses. But Ezra instructs the people, “Do not be sad and do not weep”…“Do not be saddened this date, for rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength!” These might be the words said to our Church in times of uncertainty—that we might turn our attention as the people of God to the restoration of the Church. Or Ezra’s words might be an encouragement to people who have undergone tragic loss or trauma. In the midst of darkness and despair, we may perceive the light of an opportunity to restore, rebuild, and redeem. Of course there is only one Redeemer for us—Jesus Christ the Lord. And his declaration in the Gospel today could not be more timely and more poignant: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, and freedom for the oppressed. Would that it would be so! But is not the outpouring of the world today a sign that “our Redeemer lives,” as always, using our ears to hear the cries of the poor, our eyes to behold and assess the needs of the oppressed, and our hands to liberate the captives of abuse, starvation, homelessness, and other human indignity? The time of Ezra and Nehemiah and of the Restoration take us back to at least 500 years before the coming of the Messiah. But then in another respect, God’s call to restoration is never too far from any generation, is it? The added blessing for any of us who would help to restore others is that we ourselves are redeemed and restored to the Lord in the process. It is within the mystery of Christ Himself that a sad time may become a time to rejoice, just as His death became a door to the Resurrection.

Amen to that!—Msgr. Richard

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.

— Luke 4:18a

Spotlight on Ministry

St. Rita Bereavement Team

The purpose of this Ministry is to help families when they are in need. We aid in planning the funeral liturgy service and providing Lectors and/or Eucharistic Ministers. We also provide Greeters to serve as ushers, hand out booklets, or assist as needed.

Maybe you would like to consider becoming active in this Ministry? It is a beautiful way to put a “face” on our St. Rita Parish for the families and the funeral attendees.

Sprucing Up!

Have you noticed that the exterior of our Church is looking fresh and clean with a fresh coat of paint? Thanks to the St. Rita Maintenance Team of Lauro and Pepe for their work on the exterior of the church. While it’s not complete, it’s well on the way and looking great!

We’ve also been repairing roofs—both the Church and the Parish Office. The roofs will eventually need to be replaced but, in the meantime, the repairs will prevent damage.

And, thanks to generous volunteers, we have cleaned out one of the storerooms in O’Malley Hall. Our Maintenance Team redid the ceiling and repainted the walls; volunteers tossed, donated, sorted and better stored everything that had been in this room.

These repairs are another way that your “blue envelope” contributions help your parish!

—Mary Lou Butler Our next Maintenance and Repairs collection is the Weekend of February 9-10. If you don’t receive an envelope packet, simply mark your check or any envelope “For Maintenance.” All funds stay at St. Rita. Thank you!
