When Pope Francis

addressed Congress

Pope Francis, in an address to a joint

meeting of Congress, encouraged

lawmakers to work together to solve the

problems of ordinary Americans and to

show compassion for people across the

globe who are suffering from war and

hunger.

His message touched on some of the

biggest political controversies of our

day, — immigration and the migration

crisis in Europe, the death penalty,

abortion, the arms trade, poverty and

religious extremism. “We must accept

all people as our children . . . We must

protect life at all stages.”

He did not tell us who we should be

but focused on who we already are.

"A nation can be considered great when

it defends liberty as Lincoln did, when it

fosters a culture which enables people to

'dream' of full rights for all their brothers

and sisters, as Martin Luther King

sought to do; when it strives for justice

and the cause of the oppressed, as

Dorothy Day did by her tireless work,

the fruit of a faith which becomes

dialogue and sows peace in the

contemplative style of Thomas Merton."

(all Americans)

In conclusion, the pope says:

"In these remarks I have sought to

present some of the richness of your

cultural heritage, of the spirit of the

American people. It is my desire that

this spirit continue to develop and grow,

so that as many young people as

possible can inherit and dwell in a land

which has inspired so many people to

dream. "God bless America!"

Operation Christmas Child

This year, we will be participating in

Operation Christmas Child again, which

is run by Samaritan’s Purse. Through

this program, we are filling shoe boxes

to be sent to needy children in third

world countries. For many of these

children, this may be the only Christmas

gift they have ever received.

Here is a list of acceptable items to be

put in the boxes, most of which can be

purchased pretty inexpensively from the

dollar store. Please feel free to visit their

website for more information,

www.samaritanspurse.org.

Please, nothing used or damaged, toy

guns or knives, military figures,

chocolate or food, lotions or liquids,

medications or vitamins, breakable

items like snow globes or glass, or

aerosol cans.

Each box costs $7 to send, please send

in a dollar to cover this cost. All items

must be returned by November 7.

Our 6th grade class will be packing these

boxes. This program only runs until mid

-November to allow time for the boxes

to be processed and mailed to the

appropriate places.

We are also in need of standard sized

shoe boxes with lids or flip tops, if you

can help, please send that in as well.

Please feel free to contact me if you

have any questions, my phone number is

586-292-5403 or e-mail me at

[email protected].

PROSPER THE WORK

OF OUR HANDS Teach us to number our days aright,

that we may gain wisdom of heart.

Return, O Lord! How long? Have

pity on your servants! Fill us at

daybreak with your kindness, that we

may shout for joy and gladness all

our days. Make us glad, for the days

when you afflicted us, for the years

when we saw evil. Let your work be

seen by your servants and your glory

by their children; and may the

gracious care of the Lord our God be

ours; prosper the work of our hands

for us! Prosper the work of our

hands!

What is true wisdom? The Book of Wis-

dom, written in Greek about 100 BC,

conveys the spirituality of Judaism after

the exile and focuses on divine wisdom.

Today’s passage is part of a prayer for

wisdom. The author uses Solomon’s

voice to express the value of divinely

given wisdom, which is more valuable

than royal trappings, riches, health, and

beauty. Throughout the wisdom litera-

ture of the Old Testament, wisdom is

portrayed as knowing how to live rightly

in God’s eyes.

According to the Letter to the Hebrews,

the Word of God penetrates the human

heart, inviting discernment. It is the en-

counter with this Word that allows one

to live in wisdom.

In our gospel today, a man questions

Jesus about eternal life. Both the ques-

tion and the answer involve action, not

just belief. Initially, Jesus reminds him

of the commandments, and yet the man

wishes for more. So Jesus lovingly in-

vites him to give up everything, to count

God as his all, and then come follow

him. This is the ultimate path of wis-

dom, looking only to God for our way of

life. However, the man goes away sad,

still tied to his possessions. Jesus

acknowledges that he has suggested a

difficult, humanly impossible thing.

Nevertheless, God’s grace makes it pos-

sible and ultimately rewarding.

Peter reminds Jesus that the disciples

have already given up everything, proba-

bly referring to their boats, nets, and life

as they knew it. The answer affirms the

disciples’ choice and reinforces Jesus’

message to give up everything for the

sake of him and the Gospel. The last line

of this reading holds a surprise. Not only

will the disciples receive a hundredfold

of goods and relations, but also persecu-

tions. This word sharpens the radical

force of Jesus’ teaching-to hand over

everything to God, even our sense of

well-being, trusting in his ultimate plan.

“And the wisdom to know

the difference”

This is the last line of the Serenity Pray-

er, written by Reinhold Neibuhr in the

early 1930’s. This particular prayer has

been used by many different organiza-

tion, in the original form, or a variation,

but the words are so powerful, I guess I

have always called it the Reminder

Prayer. There are three requests to the

Lord in this prayer, to give us serenity,

courage and wisdom, all the important

ingredients to help us through each day

and to find contentment within our-

selves.

In the first line we are asking for sereni-

ty, finding a place where we can be

calm and peaceful, allowing yourself, if

only for a minute, to offer your day and

thoughts to God, and helping you in any

challenges that may come your way for

that day. “Peace is what I leave with

you; it is my own peace that I give you.

I do not give it as the world does. Do

not be worried and upset; do not be

afraid.” (John 14:27)

Courage, when I was younger I used to

think this was reserved for our “soldiers,

policemen, firemen” those wonderful

men and women who are prepared and

ready to come to our aid at every mo-

ment of the day. As I grew older I see

courage every moment of the day. I see

courage in the strength of a young cou-

ple working together when a disabled

child enters the world who will need

constant care for his/hers lifetime, cour-

age in families dealing with sudden un-

employment, mounting bills, but stay

together to work it out, courage in peo-

ple battling their own health issues,

sometimes even terminal, who continue

to put a smile on their face and greet

everyone they know with that smile, and

showing their courage and strength to us

all. Yes, courage is everywhere around

us, and we all have it, sometimes it has

to be nurtured, but it takes our own

courage to help another find their cour-

age. “Don’t be afraid, for I am with

you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am

your God. I will strengthen you and

help you. I will hold you up with my

victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Wisdom, to me this is the most confus-

ing. Proverbs 2, tells us, “For the Lord

gives wisdom; from his mouth comes

knowledge and understanding.”

Knowledge and understanding, I know I

have had many moments in my life

when I sure could have used some

knowledge on a certain subject, or could

have been more understanding, but per-

haps this is what we are to gain for our-

selves and others as we walk our spiritu-

al path.

The Author, John Piper, explains,

“Wisdom isn’t simply intelligence or

knowledge or even understanding. It is

the ability to use these to think and act

in such a way that common sense pre-

vails and choices are beneficial and pro-

ductive. Experience might be one of the

most valuable tools in acquiring wis-

dom. It is the ability to discern or judge

what is true, right, or lasting. An exam-

ple of this is knowledge and knowing

how to use a gun; wisdom is knowing

when to use it and when to keep it hol-

stered.” Pope Francis also gives us a

very good lesson in wisdom by explain-

ing “it is to see the world, to see situa-

tion, circumstances, problems, every-

thing through God’s eyes. Sometimes

we see things according to our liking or

according to the condition of our heart,

with love. Wisdom is what the Holy

Spirit works in us as to enable us to see

things with the eyes of God. We must

go beyond the outward appearance of

reality and scrutinize the depths of

God’s thoughts and His plan for salva-

tion.” “If any of you lacks wisdom, you

should ask God, who gives generously

to all without finding fault, and it will be

given to you.” (James 1:5)

“Happy is the man who finds wisdom

and the man who gets understand-

ing.” (Proverbs 3:13)

Peace and blessing,

Karyn

Prayer for Vocations Loving and generous God,

you called the prophets to

bring your word to your chosen people.

Your Son, Jesus, called the first disciples

to be bold proclaimers of the good news.

In the modern world, you continue to

call your sons and daughters to the

priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated

life.

Calm the chaos and soothe the sounds of

our world, and allow more to hear your

soft voice calling them to pick up their

cross and follow.

May the Holy Spirit fall upon your

church in a profound way, so that we

may experience a tremendous harvest of

grace.

May vocations increase ever abundantly

and may your church stand as a witness

to the world of the good news of your

Son, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Learn to listen like a teddy bear, with ears

Learn to forgive like a teddy bear, with an

Learn to love like a teddy bear, with arms

Do not ask for your life’s load lightened, but

for courage to endure.

Do not ask for fulfillment in all your life, do
