  • A Reading from the first Book of Samuel (1 SM 3:3b-10, 19)

Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was. The LORD calledto Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You calledme.” “I did not call you, “ Eli said. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again theLORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am, “ he said. “You called me.” ButEli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.” At that time Samuel was notfamiliar with the LORD, because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet. TheLORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here Iam. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth. So he said toSamuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.”When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, callingout as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be withouteffect.

I confess to almighty Godand to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinnedin my thoughts and in my words,in what I have doneand in what I have failed to do, (And then striking your breast three times)through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;therefore, I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Priest: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy.Priest: Christ have mercy. People: Christ have mercy.Priest: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy.*

*(Or any other option the priest chooses. “The Lord havemercy” can be sung as “Kyrie elison” or the Penitentialhymn “Asperges” may be sung.)

Lord Jesus Christ,Only Begotten Son,Lord God, Lamb of God,Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

  • A Reading from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians (1 COR 6:13c-15a, 17-20)

Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lordis for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you notknow that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to the Lordbecomes one Spirit with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commitsis outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you notknow that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you havefrom God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John (JN 1:35-42) People: Glory to you, O Lord.

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by,he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said andfollowed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them,“What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translatedmeans Teacher —, “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and youwill see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed withhim that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of SimonPeter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first foundhis own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” — which istranslated Christ —. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him andsaid, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which istranslated Peter.

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Responsorial: Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. (PS 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10)

Lector: Alleluia! People Only: Alleluia! (Stand) Lector Only: We have found the Messiah: Jesus Christ, who brings us truth and grace. (Jn 1:41, 17b) People Only: Alleluia!

Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.
