A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah (IS 35:4-7A)
Thus says the LORD: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be
strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with
divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the
blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap
like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Streams will burst
forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. The burning sands will
become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water.
Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
September 9, 2018The Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
(The people’s responses in bold represent wording that Pope Benedict had changed in the Mass throughout the world.)
Greeting
Priest: The Lord be with you.People: And with your spirit.
The Confiteor
I confess to almighty Godand to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinnedin my thoughts and in my words,in what I have doneand in what I have failed to do, (And then striking your breast three times)through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;therefore, I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Priest: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy.Priest: Christ have mercy. People: Christ have mercy.Priest: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy.*
*(Or any other option the priest chooses. “The Lord havemercy” can be sung as “Kyrie elÁison” or the Penitentialhymn “Asperges” may be sung.)
Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King.O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ,Only Begotten Son,Lord God, Lamb of God,Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

A Reading from the Letter of St. James (JAS 2:1-5) My brothers and sisters, show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious LordJesus Christ. For if a man with gold rings and fine clothes comes into your assembly, and apoor person in shabby clothes also comes in, and you pay attention to the one wearing thefine clothes and say, “Sit here, please,” while you say to the poor one, “Stand there,” or“Sit at my feet,” have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges withevil designs? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Did not God choose those who arepoor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to thosewho love him?
Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark (MK 7:31-37)People: Glory to you, O Lord.
Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a
speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by
himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting,
touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
“Ephphatha !”— that is, “Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears were
opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them
not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it.
They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He
makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
The Responsorial: Praise the Lord, my soul! (PS 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10)
Lector: Alleluia People Only: Alleluia (Stand)Lector Only: Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom
and cured every disease among the people.People Only: Alleluia
Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.

Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation He came down
from heaven,At the words that follow, up to and including and became Man, all bow
and by the Holy Spirit was Incarnate of the
Virgin Mary and became Man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius
Pilate,
He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of
Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
Who with the Father and the Son is adored and
glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All
Jesus, my Lord, my God, my all!How can I love Thee as I ought? And how revere this wondrous gift,So far surpassing hope or thought?
Refrain:Sweet Sacrament, we Thee adore!Oh, make us love Thee more and more.Oh, make us love Thee more and more.
Had I but Mary's sinless heartTo love Thee with, my dearest King,Oh, with what bursts of fervent praise,Thy goodness, Jesus, would I sing!Refrain
Oh! See upon the altar placedThe Victim of divinest love!Let all the earth be low adore,And join the choirs of heav’n above.Refrain
Offertory
Come, Holy Ghost
Come Holy Ghost, Creator Blest,
And in our hearts take up Thy rest;
Come with Thy grace and heav’nly aid
To fill the hearts which Thou hast made,
To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.
O Comforter to Thee we cry,
Thou heav’nly Gift of God most high;
Thou fount of life and fire of love,
And sweet anointing from above,
And sweet anointing from above.
Praise be to Thee Father and Son,
And Holy Spirit, with them one;
And may the Son on us bestow
The gifts that from the Spirit flow,
The gifts that from the Spirit flow.
Entrance
Let There be Peace on Earth
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth,
The peace that was meant to be!
With God as our Father, brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me.
Let this be the moment now.
With ev’ry breath I take,
Let this be my solemn vow;
To take each moment and live each moment
In peace eternally!
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin
with me!
Concluding
In the Breaking of the Bread
In the walking on the road, we saw Him.In the telling of our hopes, we saw Him.In the burning of our hearts, we saw the Lord.At the meal He took the bread and then He blessed it, broke it, offered it.In the breaking of the bread.
Refrain:We saw Him!Suddenly our eyes were opened, and we knew He was alive! There within our midst was Jesus, and we knew He was alive! In the breaking of the bread, He is here with us again. And we know He is alive!Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia!
We set out to find His friends and tell them.We went to Jerusalem to tell them; And with joy we told them, “We have seen the Lord!”And as we were speaking there He stood among us, blessed us, said to us,“Now my peace I leave with you.”

Luther as a deliberate revolutionary, Gregory describes the cultural, political, and intellectual trends
that informed him and helped give rise to the Reformation, which led to social upheavals across Europe.

Prayer to St. Michael
St. Michael the Archangel, defendus in battle. Be our defense againstthe wickedness and snares of theDevil. May God rebuke him, wehumbly pray, and do thou, O Princeof the heavenly hosts, by the powerof God, thrust into Hell Satan, andall the evil spirits, who prowl aboutthe world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
