Sunday Scripture Speaks...August 9, 2020:

Where do I fix my gaze?

The technology with which the cell phones are evolving has been phenomenal over

the last two decades. With a cell-phone in hand, apart from having access to many

tools and apps, you certainly have a camera to capture people and selfies, portraits

and panoramic, time lapse to slow motion pictures, so on and so forth. Back in the

day, when the photographer had to be called in to capture a portrait picture, you’d

commonly hear the words: “head up, chin down, open eyes, fix your gaze on the lens, and smile.” In a

nutshell, the photographer wants you to look into the lens, and fix your gaze. In the scripture readings for

this Sunday, particularly in the Gospel, we notice how the Divine power is manifested in dramatic ways

presented in the most unassuming events of life. At the request of Peter, “Lord, if it is you, command me to

come to you on the water,” Jesus simply said, ‘Come.’ As long as Peter’s gaze was fixed on Jesus, who

disciples initially thought to be a ghost, Peter was able to walk on the water making his way toward Jesus.

The moment his focus shifted from Jesus to the wind and the depth of the sea, he begin to sink, and shouts,

“Lord, save me.” The gospel underscores an important spiritual lesson: it is not enough to acknowledge

Jesus or even to step into danger for His sake. We are able to do this only when our gaze is firmly fixed on

Him, with the faith in the power that comes from Him. If we only depend on ourselves, and the created

realities around us, we are prone to sink even into deeper chaos. The boat on the Sea of Galilee, with the

disciples being tossed by the aggressive winds and storm represent the Church from its inception to this day

and beyond: you and me, all of us together. While the storms of life are unavoidable, our faith compels us to

fix our gaze on the Creator, Jesus Christ. Where do I fix my gaze? On the Creator or on the created realities?

Blessings upon these young people receiving their Confirmation on August 2, 2020. “May God bless you with a good life, full of love, joy, and contentment. ... “On this

special day, our prayer is that you will always remember that Jesus loves you and that you have faith in Him.” “May the Lord bless you with His guidance from this day forward.

And may you have faith in His plan.”

SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS

(EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942)

August 9

“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our

people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch

bishops’ condemnation of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from

Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led

to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to

the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one sitting, then

declared, “That is the Truth!” Baptized on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast

of Jesus’ initiation into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of

Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne,

transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi

persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She

died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
