STEWARDSHP THOUGHT:
“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” - John 15:12-13 Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? Jesus
says that if we love Him we would be willing to offer whatever we have to Him, not because we want praise and glory, but simply because we love Him. Does your giving seem mechanical out of obligation or do you share freely out of love?

I had the remainder of a tooth removed during oral surgery this past week. I tried to remain calm, but found myself clutching the armrests while the procedure took place. Filling out forms, waiting for the lidocaine to take effect and the procedure itself – those were the three major parts of my office visit. The first two parts each took longer than having the tooth removed. Interesting! Enjoy the remainder of the Easter Season and (finally?) the warmer weather.
With love and prayers,
Father Bob Edwards

Dear Friends,
No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. - John 15:13
It’s interesting to see how many people have an idea of what John 3:16 says. But today’s gospel has a whopper of a line, too. We can “lay down” our lives for each other by what is called a ”white martyrdom”. A white martyr does not shed blood like a “red martyr,” but the witness can still be very powerful. Christians choose to make their lives a “living sacrifice” (see Romans 12) each day for the glory of God. In fact, living this way helped prepare those who were “red martyrs” to be open to the grace of making the ultimate sacrifice in witness to God.
Be sure to pray for Bishop Murry who is at the Cleveland Clinic for intensive chemotherapy because of a diagnosis of a type of acute leukemia. Reports have been in the news and periodic updates will be given at www.doy.org. See the green box on the right, labeled ‘Latest News.”
In two homilies last weekend, I mentioned Alfie Evans of Great Britain who recently died. An observant parishioner reminded me that the fact that Alfie had as much care as he did was because of Great Britain’s socialized medicine. I was reminded, too, that there are many children in our country that may not have gotten that far through the system. The topic is controversial. Another case in the news is Vincent Lambert, an adult, in France. These cases remind me that we all need more prayer, study, conversation and reflection on the intricacies of life issues. Saint Joseph the Worker (whose feast was May 1) is a good patron to inspire us.

The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord The Ascension of the Lord is celebrated on Sunday, May 13th.
Forty days after the resurrection, Jesus and His disciples went to Mount Olivet,
near Jerusalem. There, Jesus promised His followers that they would soon receive the Holy Spirit, and He instructed them to remain in Jerusalem until the Spirit had come. Then Jesus blessed them, and as He gave the blessing, He began to ascend into heaven. The account of Jesus' Ascension is found in Luke 24:50-51 and Acts 1:9-11. The Ascension of Jesus Christ signaled the end of His earthly ministry. God the Father had lovingly sent His Son into the world at Bethlehem, and now the Son was returning to the Father. The period of human limitation was at an end.
Although the traditional date of the Ascension is forty days after Easter, most dioceses in the United States celebrate the Holy Day the following Sunday.
MOTHERS’ DAY The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.
