Father Bob’s Corner . Dear Friends,

“If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

- see Psalm 95:7-8, Hebrews 3:15

The response for today’s Responsorial Psalm reminds us to listen for God’s voice. In fact the revised New Testament of the New American Bible translates part of the phrase as, “Oh that today you would hear his voice.” But our trouble is in listening. We have to be quiet to listen to God. We need to take time to become quiet. How is your quiet time with God going? Mine is doing fairly well, even in spite of some unusual interruptions trying to outdo the usual ones. Praise God, though, things move right along. If you have difficulty with interruptions, keep persevering. Quiet time with God is a treasure.

The Office of Readings had a letter to the Magnesians by Saint Ignatius of Antioch (50 to 98 or 117) on Tuesday, July 19. Saint Ignatius writes, “Let us not be insensible of Christ’s loving kindness. For, if He had acted as we do, we would have been lost indeed.” That’s quite a sobering thought. If Christ acted as we do, we would be lost. Thank God that He acted as the Son of God, one with His human nature! That assures me that we are on the right track when we make the effort to act more like Jesus.

Then on Monday, this past week, there was a good quote from Saint Caesarius of Arles (470-543). In one of his sermons he writes, “Do we all desire to receive mercy? Let us make mercy our patroness now, and she will free us in the world to come…….

…... Yes, there is mercy in heaven, but the road to it is paved by our merciful acts on earth.” Those are good words to hear as we continue our journey in this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Work is being (or has been) completed on the brickwork at the front of St. Patrick Church. The rectory chimney is being rebuilt. That’s the latest news I have received on the physical shape of St. Patrick Church.

Internet service at the Parish Center at St. Paul Parish has been sporadic. I guess most of the problem has been from critters chewing on the cable. Things are fixed by now, but caused a lot of delays during the past couple weeks.

Summer is moving along. The Democratic National Convention ended on Thursday. World Youth Day 2016, will be coming to a close this Sunday. People are coming and going on vacation.

Keep August 14 and 15 free for the program we’re having at St. Paul on Miracles on those days. It should be quite inspiring for our parishioners.

Make sure that God is part of your vacation plans. Search the web or call our office ahead of time to find a vacation church to attend. A couple ladies (sisters-in-law) did just that and joined us for coffee and donuts last week Sunday morning at St. Paul.

Dear Jesus, make us merciful like the Father.

With love and prayers,

Father Bob Edwards

Encountering Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration

“In the Blessed Sacrament, God loves us so tenderly, He empties Himself completely, O who could believe it? Withholding nothing, He gives His all. He gives His flesh for us to eat, He gives His blood for us to drink. He gives His soul, His infinite being to transform us into Himself. Praised be the Blessed Sacrament!”

- St. Louis de Montfort (hymn No. 30, 3rd Stanza) - from the book Bethlehem”, by Fr. Faber

Diocesan & Local Events – July 31, 2016

We Need An “Off” Switch

After all the violence we’ve witnessed in the past months, what does it mean to preach the truth of ancient scriptures? It is not hard to imagine Moses weeping and pleading over the streets of those cities involved with those ancient words: “If only you would heed the voice of the Lord your God, and keep His commandments and statues that are written in the book

of law.” It is not unusual to feel powerless over the

wanton carnage that plays over and over again in the media, “POWERLESS”!!!!

But we are not powerless over our own thoughts and hearts and feelings. Not powerless over the pride we take in our prejudice, or bigotry hidden in our biased opinions, or our own words or deeds. We are not powerless over our freedom to forgive those who have hurt us.

The commandment to love God and our neighbor is neither mysterious nor remote – it is near, we have only to carry it out – right where we are.

Comfort & Strength Comfort & Strength Comfort & Strength Comfort & Strength

Have No Fear for what tomorrow may bring. The same loving God who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. God will either shield you from suffering or give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations. - St. Francis de Sales

Transfiguration of Jesus - ….is an episode in the New Testament narrative in which

Jesus is transfigured & becomes radi-ant upon a mountain. Jesus and three of his apostles go to a mountain, & Jesus begins to shine with bright rays of light. Then the prophets Moses & Elijah appear next to Him. Jesus is then called "Son" by a voice in the sky, assumed to be God the Father.

The transfiguration of The Lord is celebrated on August 6, 2016.
