SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

Dear brothers and sisters, This week as we enter the season of Lent, Holy Mother Church reminds us that “Lent is a special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Through its twofold themes of repentance and Baptism, Lent disposes both the catechumens and the faithful to celebrate the Pascal Mystery.” Our Ash Wednesday liturgy reminds us of the Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, which help us to build up our spiritual strength and renew our Easter faith. However, we do well to remem-ber that these are not the goals of Lent but means to attain the goal of our spiritual renewal through repen-tance and conversion as we prepare to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection. Therefore, during the season of Lent, we need to make sure that each of the three disciplines gets our attention. During Lent we should strive to pray more, especially as a family and attend Mass at least one more day of the week. Tuesday evening Mass provides an opportunity for working people to go to the celebration of the Eucharist. Please also try to participate in the Stations of the Cross on Fridays. We should keep in mind that we have to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and abstain from meat on all Fridays of Lent. Many people keep the great tradition of giving up something for Lent. However, what we give up should benefit the needy of our community. In other words, our almsgiving should reflect a spirit of sacri-fice as well as generosity. In order to help our parishioners, this year we will distribute “Family Lenten Sacrifice” cups. This is not to simply collect donations but to encourage people to save what they sacrifice and deposit the amount in the cup. You may bring your savings to the church on Easter Sunday, either in a specially-marked envelope or in the cup itself. It is very meaningful if you also encourage your children to give up something during Lent and save it to help those in need. After Easter, we will donate the amount to Catholic Charities that serves the needy people of our area. Fr. Briggs and I cordially wish all of you a very fruitful season of Lent and pray that we take this journey together to ascend to the joyful mountain of Easter.

Fr. Jose Kallukalam
