WORSHIP JOHN THE BAPTIST

At a school open house a woman could be overheard introducing her husband to some of the other parents. “Oh, Bill, I’d like you to meet Johnny’s father. And over here, this is Marie’s mom; you know, the little girl from our Ellen’s soccer team.”

With satisfied resignation Bill introduced himself not by name: “I’m Ellen’s Dad.”

It’s good to know who you are. Be it someone’s father or mother, son or daughter, husband or wife, it’s important to embrace the full meaning of our various roles.

John the Baptist knows who he is. And who he is not. He is not the Christ. Nor Elijah. Nor like any other prophet God’s people had ever seen.

John the Baptist knows his mission is divine. He’s more than satisfied to be the one to announce the coming of God’s reign. The Christ is near. Make straight your paths. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Our deep gratitude to parishioners and visitors for

your continued support to the ongoing work of Christ at St. Matthias.

OUR NEW CHURCH As of early December, there are some real visible changes starting to appear for the new church. Waterproofing is

now covering more of the exterior sheathing, plywood is covering areas where the manufactured stone will be installed, and the exterior front arches and windows have been framed. The masons have also begun installing the brick exterior on the left side of the church. Interior wall stud framing and the interior electrical rough-in is also continuing. For the St Vincent DePaul building some interior electrical remains and the walls will be closed, taped and floated. Follow along with the construction updates on the parish website under new church and construction journal. There you will find pictures following the construction progress. For your SAFETY, DO NOT ENTER THE CONSTRUCTION AREA including any of the cleared areas of our site even when there are no worked present. While we did meet our financial goals for our campaign, thanks to the generous support of many parishioners, our parish will be taking on a sizable monthly payment. If you are still making payments on a pledge, please continue to do so until fulfilled. Any additional gifts to our campaign will also be appreciated. If you would like to sponsor an element of our new church, we have an updated list of items that are available in the narthex. The requested donations for items range from $2,500 to $100,000. Please pray for the safe construction of our new church and for minimal weather delays. Contact our campaign team through Tom Condon at 281-382-8097 for more information about the campaign or Jerry Strenk at 936-449-6686 with Building Committee questions.

DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND 2020 The 2020 Archdiocesan DSF campaign is underway in the Archdiocese with this year’s theme of "Bring Your Greatest Gifts to the Lord".

The Cardinal has set our parishes goal for this year at $65,000. As of December 01, our parish has contributed $ 62,150.00. Your pledge can be dropped in the collection box, inside the church office or mailed directly to the Archdiocese. Please confirm that your pledge card indicates our parish name. Please pray about how you can support this important campaign that benefits so many needy in the Galveston - Houston area.

Sponsor a New Church Paver The construction of our new church is well underway and is expected to be completed in late 2021. A portion of the sidewalk leading up to the new church has been set aside for special engraved pavers where parishioners and friends of our parish can create a lasting memory of their support for our new church. 4” x 8” and 8” x 8” pavers are available for purchase for you to have your special prayer, your family name, or other message engraved including religious artwork. Orders can be placed online at our parish website, www.st-matthias.net, or using the order form available in the narthex and online. If you plan to purchase multiple pavers, please use a separate order form for each paver or order online where all pavers can be grouped under a single order. If you are interested in ordering multiple pavers with text that spans across them, please contact Tom Mayhew at [email protected]

Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire

to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive

You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult

Did You Know! Last week the RCIA lesson was about the Sacrament of Matrimony. Matrimony is one of the two Sacraments of Service and Mission. Matrimony is more than a civil union with a Church blessing because of its sacramentally and liturgically nature. Catholics believe that a sacramental marriage is a covenant between a man and woman making the love of Christ present to each other and they become a witness of the love of Christ to the world. The minsters of matrimony are the couple who make Christ present to each other. The priest and witnesses represent the Church community. The elements of a sacramental marriage are a baptized man and woman who are free to enter into marriage and expressing their consent by their responses to the questions asked by the priest regarding unity, permanent lifelong commitment and openness to children, the exchange of vows, and consummation of the marriage. The effects of Matrimony are that the couple are united in a permanent bond, receives the promise of Christ that he will help them to carry out their covenant promises and responsibilities and the grace of God to strengthen and perfect their love and union and sanctified them on their way to eternal life. The Church teaches that married love is a sharing in God’s love and shows how God loves us and how we are to love. Married love is self-giving (freely given and unconditional), forgiving (looks beyond issues that divide and seeks reconciliation and healing), faithful (lifelong commitment), intimate (emotional, spiritual and sexual), creative (open to children), and oneness (each a distinct person but their union makes a more complete whole). God, the author of marriage, established the permanence of marriage from the beginning of creation. The Church teaches that a sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved. Although a civil divorce may be necessary to protect the spouse or children from abuse or mistreatment, the Church still considers the couple to be married. A divorced person is encouraged to continue to receive the sacraments. A divorced person who marries again with a living spouse is also encouraged to participate but may not receive Eucharist. They cannot remarry in the Church without a decree of nullity, an annulment. An annulment is not catholic divorce but the official recognition after a thorough investigation that the sacramental marriage did not take place.

One of the callings of a married couple is to help their partner get to heaven. What are you doing or planning to do to assist your spouse in achieving heaven?

ADULT EDUCATION

The St. Vincent de Paul Giving Tree in the Narthex still has a few tags for children of needy families. It’s not too late to select a tag or two to help make Christmas a little brighter for a child. The tags contain suggested gift ideas

but you do not have to buy everything on the tag. For those of you who do not want to shop but would like to contribute, please make your checks payable to St. Vincent de Paul, and we will do the shopping for you. Please bring your packages with the tags attached to the parish office by Tuesday, Dec 15. Gifts will be distributed on Friday morning, Dec 18. Thank you for helping St. Vincent de Paul to help so many this Christmas season.

Stewardship 3rd Sunday of Advent: December 13

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circum-stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

– 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running con-versation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others
