Gathering(Please stand as you are able) Call to Worship God is Our Refuge
Reformation Call to Worship P If God is for us, C who can be against us. P We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are
called according to God’s purpose. C In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. P Almighty Lord, our ears are open to your Word. Our eyes are open to your
presence. C For the promises made through your prophet Jeremiah are certain and
sure: "This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them."
Gathering Song #504 A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Opening Litany P God gathers us together today with every community seeking renewal and new
life around the globe, uniting us as one people celebrating God’s gift of resurrection.
C The spirit of God is renewing the church!
2 P Where mission developers and missionaries are sharing the gospel in new
contexts, C The spirit of God is renewing the church! P Where we have not yet begun to share the good news, C The spirit of God is renewing the church! P Where communities are discerning new directions and praying for hope, C The spirit of God is renewing the church! P Where people of faith are struggling to see a way forward, searching for vision
and purpose, C The spirit of God is renewing the church! P Here, today, God breathes life into us, C The spirit of God is renewing the church!
Apostolic Greeting page 98 Prayer of the Day
P Let us pray, C Almighty God, gracious Lord, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, your
faithful people. Keep us steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort us in all temptations, defend us against all our enemies, and bestow on your Church your saving peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
(Please be seated) Anthem God Wants Us to Praise Him by Ruth Elaine Schram This Little Light of Mine arr. by John Paradowski Praise Kids! Word Drama Martin and Katie Luther at Home Annette Olson and Steve Winters First Reading Jeremiah 31:31-34
The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people to live upright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the poor and needy [Jer. 22:16]. The renewed covenant is possible only because the Lord will forgive iniquity and not remember sin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets.
Responsive Psalm Psalm 46
L God of shelter, God of strength, C Mighty Fortress, saving God:
3 L even if the earth shudders, even if mountains tumble into sea depth, making the
waters churn and seethe, we shall not be afraid. C You are with us, God our stronghold, God of Jacob. L Joy streams through your city, through your sacred dwelling. C You are with us, God; the city cannot fall. L At dawn you scatter the enemy; kingdoms topple, earth crumbles at the sound of
your voice. C You are with us, God our stronghold, God of Jacob. L Come! Let us see God’s wonders, God’s saving deeds! C God breaks the bow, snaps the spear, burns the shield, and stamps out war. L “Be still!” says God, “Know that I hold power over all peoples.” C You are with us, God our stronghold, God of Jacob.
Second Reading Romans 3:19-28
Paul’s words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and the other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ’s death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.
(Please stand as you are able) Gospel Acclamation #517 Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word Gospel John 8:31-36
Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truth that sets people free from sin.

5 Offertory Prayer page 107 Confession & Forgiveness
P “Nathan said to David, ‘The Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die.’” C We come before you, Lord, seeking your forgiveness. P Almighty and Everlasting God, you are a God rich in forgiveness: C God of grace we confess that we have not followed you in all that we say and
do, that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed. We confess our broken relationships, our weak discipleship, and our basic insecurities. Renew us with your Spirit; give us strength of faith and courage to be disciples of faith, hope and love.
P “Thus it is written, that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins must be proclaimed in his name.” That Word is now proclaimed to you.
C We come before you, Lord, ready to receive good gifts from you. Amen. Words of Institution page 108 The Lord’s Prayer page 112 [Traditional Version] Invitation to Communion page 112 (Please be seated) Luther’s statement on Holy Communion What is communion? It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, under the bread and
the wine, instituted by Christ himself for us Christians to eat and drink. In this sacrament is given to us the forgiveness of sins, and where there is forgiveness of sins there is life and salvation.
We have, therefore, two principal sacraments in the church, baptism and the bread. Baptism leads us into a new life on earth; the bread guides us through death into eternal life.
Finally, the blessing of this sacrament is fellowship and love, by which we are strengthened against death and all evil. This fellowship is twofold: on the one hand we partake of Christ and all saints, on the other hand we permit all Christians to be partakers of us, in whatever way they and we are able; so that by this sacrament all self-seeking love is uprooted and gives place to love which seeks the common good of all, and through this mutual love there is one bread, one drink, one body, one community, --that is the true union of Christian brethren.

Baptism is not simply water, but it is the water connected with God’s Word. What benefits does baptism confer? It works forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and gives everlasting salvation to all who believe. It is not the just the water that does it, but the Word of God, which is in and with the water, and faith which trusts this Word of God in the water. For without the Word of God the water is simply water, and
4 no baptism. But with the Word of God, it is a baptism. Therefore, go forth baptizing in the name of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
