Ken says Rita has seen him thru a lot

over the years knee replacement, other

(NAPS)Investing a little time and effort to make sureour tires are road worthy can pay dividends when itomes to safety. Experts say the first step is to make sureour tires are properly inflated.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safetydministration, underinflated tires contribute to morean 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries each year.mply checking your tire pressure can help you stay safeuring your next trip.

To get the most from your tires this summer, here areme maintenance tips from the worlds largest tire andheel retailerDiscount Tire:

Get Pressure RightLow tire pressure canecrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pounder square inch per month. The specific inflation pressureumber can be found on the vehicle placard located one drivers side doorpost, glove box door, fuel door orthe owners manual. Custom tires and wheels may

ange standard air pressure requirements, so if you cus-mize, have a pro check them out before you go. Dont Overload Vehicle Overloading

ecreases fuel economy due to increased wind drag andargo weight. Handling, control and braking are alsoegatively impacted.

Rotate Before You GoRegular rotation helpschieve uniform tire wear and improves road perform-nce. Tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles havenger life and help to maximize your tire investment.

Straighten UpProper wheel alignment pro-des safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tiresear evenly and last longer.

Bald Isnt BeautifulLack of tread affects thees ability to grip the road. Make sure tires dont haveneven wear, high or low spots or unusually smooth

areas that can decrease traction and increase the risk ofroad accidents.

A Five-Minute FixChecking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay

dividends when it comes to fuel economy and handling.Dont go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to checksince a tire can be 50 percent underinflated but still notappear flat.

Make it a habit to check tire pressure every monthand always before a long trip. Use the vehicle manufac-turers recommended tire pressure.

Additionally, check tire tread depth by using the"penny test." Insert Abe Lincolns head upside down intothe tread. If you see his entire head, its time to replacethe tire.

Dont like pressure? Your tires do

While Juneteenth Day has been celebrated formore than 145 years, this is the third year it is alegal holiday in Wisconsin.

"Milwaukee has long celebrated JuneteenthDay and I am proud that Wisconsin is moving for-ward to recognize this important holiday across thestate," Governor Jim Doyle said during a bill sign-ing ceremony Dec. 1, 2009 at NorthcottNeighborhood House. "Juneteenth Day marks ahistoric milestone in our nations history and cele-brates the freedom that unites all Americans."

Senate Bill 170 made Juneteenth Day, June 19,an official legal holiday. Juneteenth Day is the old-est known celebration commemorating the end of

slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865,slaves in Texas first received word that all slaves inthe U.S. had been freed by President Lincoln.

Milwaukee first celebrated Juneteen1970s, and the annual event continu

The bill was introduced by Sen. S(D-Milwaukee) and was approved Senate in October 2009, with the sfollowing a short time later.

"Wisconsin is now the 32nd starecognize Juneteenth as a state hoholiday observance," said Mona Adboard member of the NationaObservance Foundation (NJOF) andthe Madison Juneteenth CelebratioCo-Chair Annie Weatherby-Flowers,approval. "We have been celebrating

Madison for 20 years. This is reaachievement and I am proud to havespeak at the state capitol in favor of

    Juneteenth a legal holida

Wisconsinrkansas and Oklahoma. It has also appeared in Alabama, orida, and California as African-American Texans migrated.

In many parts of Texas, ex-slaves purchased land, oremancipation grounds," for the Juneteenth gathering.xamples include: Emancipation Park in Houston, purchased in872; what is now Booker T. Washington Park in Mexia; andmancipation park in East Austin.

Celebration of Juneteenth declined during World War II butvived in 1950 at the Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas.terest and participation fell away during the late 1950's and960's as attention focused on expansion of freedom forfrican-Americans. In the 1970's Juneteenth revived in some

ommunities. For example, in Austin the Juneteenth celebrationturned in 1976 after a 25 year hiatus. The preceding information was taken form the Texas State

ontainers in your landscape, large or small.Add vertical interest to any garden or gar-

en space. Select a large attractive containered with tall plants like papyrus and canna.

r elevate a small pot on steppers or an over-

turned pot for added height. Create heightwith smaller pots and plants by strategicallystacking and planting them into a creativeplanting. Try setting any of these planters rightin the garden to create a dramatic focal point.

Create a privacy screen or mask a badview. Use an arbor or other support for hang-ing baskets and then place a few containersbelow for an attractive screen. Or create a gar-den of containers to provide seasonal interestusing a variety of plants. Use trees, shrubs, andornamental grasses for height. Save money by

purchasing smaller plants. Elevate these on

overturned pots for added height and impact.Mask the mechanics by wrapping the pots inburlap. Then add a few colorful self-wateringpots in the foreground for added color andbeauty. Fill these with annuals or perennials foradditional seasonal interest.

Bring the garden right to your back doorfor ease of harvest and added entertainment.A self-watering patio planter, windowbox, orrail planter reduces maintenance and makesharvesting herbs as easy as reaching out thewindow or backdoor. Plus, guests will have fun

harvesting their own fresh mint for mojitos or

greens for their salads.Define outdoor living spa

landscape. Use containersdividers to separate entertaareas from quiet reflective spacer using pots with built in cas temoveable saucers to make moeasier. This way you can exindividual spaces as needed sthe pots.

Picture it. It is 1909, just five years

efore President Woodrow Wilsonould sign a national observance ofMother's Day into effect. Several statesad been celebrating Mother's Day forears, and while listening to a sermonbout the day, young Sonora Smartodd wondered why no day had been

et aside for fathers. Her own fatherad raised her and her siblings single-andedly after their mother had died.here should be such a day, Doddought, and decided to start cam-aigning for one.

Dodd selected her father's birthday,ne 5, for the celebration. However,is did not give officials in her home-wn of Spokane, WA, enough time torepare. They selected the thirdunday in June, June 19, to be Father'say. On June 19, 1910, the firstather's Day celebration took place inpokane. Dodd selected the red roses a tribute for living fathers and thehite rose as a tribute for deceasedthers. Many young men wore roses to

hurch in honor of their fathers on thatay.

Dodd continued campaigning for aational observance of Father's Day,

and other towns hopped onboard, throwing their own Father's Day cele-brations. President Woodrow Wilsongave his support to the cause, speakingat Father's Day services in Spokane in1916. President Calvin Coolidge fol-lowed this with a call for a nationalobservance of Father's Day in 1924.

In spite of Dodd's efforts, it wasn'tuntil 1966 that President Lyndon

Johnson signed a presidential procla -mation establishing the third Sunday in

June as Father' s Day. Pres ident RichardNixon made the national observancepermanent in 1972. Today, over 30countries around the world celebrateFather's Day. Sonora Smart Doddwould be extremely proud of how farher idea has come.
