All Souls’ Day EnvelopesDuring the month of November, the trees shed their leaves

and darkness grows, the natural world among us almost seems to be preparing to hand over its life. During this month the Church - our supernatural world - also focuses us on the life of the world to come. November has always been a time dedicated to remem-bering the souls of those who have “gone before us marked with the sign of faith, especially those for whom we now pray.”

Now you can take an active part in the Church’s liturgical memory by filling out All Souls’ Day envelopes, which are now available in the Church and at the Parish Office.

Please fill out these envelopes for your loved ones, and re-turn them by October 30th .

These envelopes will remain on the altar throughout this month and the next. With this opportunity, we can make sure your loved ones will be remembered in a special way at all of the Masses said in November.

While cremation is “permitted” (but not promoted) by the Church, one of the very problematic issues involved is that often the remains will be left at a funeral home, stuck on a counter, or even forgotten.

During the month of November, St Mary’s Church will serve as a drop off point for people who, for one reason or another, never buried their loved ones.

People may simply leave them on a table in the Parish Center Chapel with an index card indi-cating the name and dates of the deceased person. We’ll open up a single deep plot in the cemetery on November 28th at 915am, and we’ll bury the cremains and conduct a prayer service for all to come. All of this is free of charge.

Ash “Amnesty”

May the souls of the faithful departed throughthe mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Five Marks of the Catholic FamilyThe fourth of five most important differences that distinguish a family

committed to living the Catholic vision of family life:Catholic Families Put Family First

Our family relationships are the primary means God uses to help us become the people he created us to be. Therefore, family life should be the most important activity in our week. Create and protect your rituals – family dinner, time to worship and pray, game or movie night.

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS

Brothers and sisters:Brothers and sisters:Since we have a great high priest who has passed

through the heavens,Jesus, the Son of God,let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priestwho is unable to sympathize with our weak-

nesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every

way,yet without sin.So let us confidently approach the throne of

graceto receive mercy and to find grace for timely

help. The word of the Lord…Thanks be to God.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him,

“Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.”

He replied, “What do you wish me to do for you?”

They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at

your left.”Jesus said to them, “You do not know what

you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which

I am baptized?” They said to him, “We can.” Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink, you

will drink, and with the baptism with which I am bap-

tized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not

mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

When the ten heard this, they became in-dignant at James and John.

Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as

rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority

over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among

you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be

the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be

served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The Gospel of the Lord. . . Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

A READING FROM THE BOOKOF THE PROPHET ISAIAH

The LORD was pleased to crush him in infirmity. If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall see his descendants in a long life, and the will of the LORD shall be accom-plished through him.Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear.

The word of the Lord . . . Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Lord, let your mercy be on us,as we place our trust in you.

Myth: Con rmation is “choosing to be Catholic”.The Catholic Church is not a club, hobby, group, or political party. The Church is the Bride of Christ and its members are His very body. Being Catholic is an identity, an indelible (permanent) part of who we are and who God wants us to be. At our baptism, we died and rose with Jesus Christ (cf. Galatians 2:20) and are now forever a part of the Body of Christ, the Church. Con rmation candi-dates are not “choosing to be Catholic” because they are Catholic already. What they do choose, however, is how they will make use of the gifts given to them in the Church: the sacraments, the Christian community, tools for Christian moral living, and the opportunity for a vibrant and life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Myth: Con rmation is “graduation from CCD”.Knowing, loving, and serving Jesus Christ and his Church are not things that ever end. We are called to be life-long disciples of Jesus, learning more about Him and the Church, continuing to participate in the Church’s life in the sacraments, and serving others for our entire life. Con rma-tion is not a sign that you are “done” learning about faith; it is only a beginning for a lifetime of diving deeper into God’s love.

Myth: Con rmation is “accepting for myself what my parents began at Baptism”.Con rmation completes and strengthens what God began to do in your life at your Baptism, but it is not about proclaiming anything. Remember, Con rmation is about receiving strength by the Holy Spirit to boldly witness the Gospel of Christ in our everyday lives and defending the faith. Myth: Con rmation is “becoming an adult in the Church”.Catholics are not “more” or “less” Catholic based on age. A baby being baptized, a second grader receiving rst Eucharist, a teen receiving Con rmation, a middle-aged person going to Reconcili-ation; an elderly person receiving Anointing of the Sick; all these people are fully Catholic. Con r-mation is not like turning 18 and acquiring the right to vote. In fact, in the Eastern Catholic Church, babies receive Baptism and Con rmation at the same time! They are clearly not “adults in the church,” but receive the sacrament validly.

Myth: Con rmation is required to get married in the Church.False! If a Catholic plans to marry in the Church and wasn’t already con rmed, the priest or dea-con helping with their marriage preparation may suggest that the person go through Con rmation preparation, but Con rmation is not a “prerequisite” for marriage. Remember, Con rmation is not about jumping through hoops. It is a personal Pentecost where we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and are empowered to witness to the Lord with our lives.

Myth: Receiving Con rmation is my right or something I’ve earned. All seven sacraments are gifts of the Church, and it is the Church’s responsibility (locally, the pas-tor’s) to determine if someone is suitably eligible and adequately prepared for any of the sacra-ments. Con rmation, as a gift of the Church, can’t be denied, but it can be postponed if the pastor determines a candidate is not suitably prepared or mature.

Sometimes people say stuff they think is true . . .Like our friends at the Discovery Channel, we’ll “bust” a few myths about various sacraments over the next few weeks.
