WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR PARISH
World Day of the Sick: February 11
World day of the sick reminds us that service to the sick and
suffering cannot be neglected. It recognizes the great efforts
of doctors, nurses, health care institutions and pastoral care
givers to restore health to those afflicted with
illness and disease.
Pope Francis draws his theme from Matthew 11:28:
Jesus’ words, “Come to me, all you who labour and are
burdened, and will give you rest.”
Pope Francis says, “Those words of Christ express the
solidarity of the Son of Man with all those who are hurt and
afflicted. How many people suffer in both body and soul!
Jesus urges everyone to draw near to him – “Come to me!” –
and he promises them comfort and repose. “When Jesus says
this, he has before him the people he meets every day on the
streets of Galilee: very many simple people, the poor, the
sick, sinners, those who are marginalized by the burden of the
law and the oppressive social system... These people always
followed him to hear his word, a word that gave hope! Jesus’
words always give hope!”
'Hear the Word of God and Do It'
Living in the Word ̶ ̶ At mass, enabled by the Holy Spirit we
offer our lives to God the Father, through Jesus his Son, as an act
of joyful praise and heartfelt thanksgiving for God's saving love.
Through the reception of Holy Communion, we are nourished
with the very Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus and thus receive
from him all that we need for our life as his disciples. This is why
disciples of Jesus have recognized from the early days of the
Church that they cannot live without the Eucharist. (Archbishop Smith, Pastoral Letter, September 14, 2017)
Grace this Week A way to experience Scripture with every meal. Grace with lines inspired by the Readings for February 9.
Leader: Lord Jesus, we thank you for your Word. Through the
good deeds of your people you bring glory to our Father in
heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
All: : Lord, strengthen us to pursue your will.

2020 Knights of Columbus Annual WHEELCHAIR SUNDAY Fundraiser
The Knights of Columbus Annual Wheelchair Sunday fundraising
drive is February 8-March 1 at St. Mary’s. There are many disabled
people in developing countries (over 100 million) that do not have the
gift of mobility and cannot afford a wheelchair on their own. To them,
a wheelchair can change their life. Over the past five years, our parish
has raised $57,010 and sent 297 wheelchairs to the Philippines,
Ukraine, Kenya and our local Red Deer Lending Cupboard. This year
we again will be providing 10 wheelchairs to the Red Deer Lending
Cupboard and the rest will go to the Dominican Republic. The
Lending Cupboard is a local, non-profit organization that loans medi-
cal equipment to those who need it, at no cost. Dominican Republic is
an impoverished country with many disabled people in need of wheel-
chairs. To make it affordable, wheelchairs are purchased and shipped
in bulk, at a cost of $195/each. You can donate after any of the Mass-
es on the February 9, February 16 or March 1 weekends, or drop your
donation off at the parish office/ in the Sunday collection by March 15.
Donation forms will be available at either entrance of the church dur-
ing the campaign. Please use an envelope clearly labelled “Knights of
Columbus Wheelchair Sunday Drive” and make cheques out to
the “Canadian Wheelchair Foundation”.

Kobe Bryant credited Catholic faith for helping him
through ordeals As the world mourns the loss of basketball great
Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven
others killed in a tragic helicopter crash, many recalled how
Bryant gave credit to his Catholic faith for seeing him through
the bad times and strengthening his marriage and family.
Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles called Bryant
“a faithful Catholic” and recalled meeting the famed
basketball player on several occasions. Some news outlets
reported Bryant and his daughter received communion shortly
before the ill-fated flight.

Scam Emails The Archdiocese has now received multiple reports this week
about email scammers targeting our parishioners once again.
These emails look like they come from a pastor, because the
scammers have created fake Gmail accounts in the pastor's
name. Typically, they ask the recipient to purchase gift cards
for someone in need. Please be assured that our priests
NEVER email their parishioners to ask for money or gift
cards out of the blue. If you receive such an email, we
encourage you to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
(online or at 1-888-495-8501).
The advertisements on this page will expire June 28, 2020. To advertise on the next series beginning August 30, 2020 please contact the parish office, 347-3114.
