The Best Customers We May Ever Have A friend who is a surgeon stopped by a clothing store in a local mall. He had just returned from a hunting trip and was still attired in cap, plaid jacket and muddy boots. Looking through the showroom for a Christmas gift for this wife, he noticed that each available clerk was obviously ignoring him. None asked if they could help. None even acknowledged his presence. Soon he left, went home, showered, dressed and went to another store where he bought his wife an expensive coat. Then he told her to return to the first store, show them the coat, tell them who her husband was and why they had missed the sale. Though his wife is far too gentle and sweet-spirited to follow that advice, it would have taught the merchant a valuable lesson if she had. Looks are deceiving, and they had inadvertently turned away one of the best customers they could ever have hoped to have.

Christ's disciples were about to do the same thing on their way to Jerusalem. Busy, pushed, stressed out about so many truly "important" things, they were suddenly intruded upon by some mothers who requested that their children get to meet Jesus. "Children?" the disciples answered. "We don't have time for children! There are sick folks to heal, lessons to teach, Pharisees to challenge, temples to cleanse and thrones to establish. Don't bother the Teacher with children." And as the rejected mothers were about to turn away, Jesus realized what had taken place. The author Mark says: "When Jesus saw what happened, he was indignant, and said to them, 'Let the children come to me. Do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall never enter it!' Then he took them in his arms and blessed them ...."

¡Caminado con Jesús!

¡Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario!

Durante años los Israelitas acudieron a Moisés para que les hablara por parte del Señor. De manera similar los discípulos acudían a Jesús para que expulsara a los demonios. Pero hoy primeramente escuchamos que Dios le concedió el don de la profecía a setenta ancianos y después se nos relata que uno que no era parte del grupo expulsa demonios en nombre de Jesús. Moisés y Jesús responden de la misma manera a las objeciones de los demás. Qué imagen más clara usa Santiago para describir los corazones de los ricos engordados para el día de la matanza. Normalmente uno piensa en los animales que se engordan para la matanza, animales que proporcionaran alimentos para poner en nuestros platos. Pero Santiago se refiere a aquellas personas que tonta y avariciosamente acumulan riquezas. Su corazón no está animado por el deseo de compartir con los necesitados. Es más, ellos empobrecen a las mismas personas que desempeñan el trabajo, pues su fin es aumentar sus ganancias. Esto deja sus corazones tan inflados como sus bolsillos. La riqueza de ellos se corromperá con moho. Su riqueza no es elegible para la vida eterna. Dios no disminuye los dones de alguien cuando los distribuyen entre otras personas. ¿Se debilito la habilidad de profetizar de Moisés después de que docenas de ancianos recibieran la misma habilidad? “No”. ¿Fueron los exorcismos Jesús menos efectivos porque otros hicieron lo mismo en su nombre? Por supuesto que “no”. La gracia de Dios no es un recurso limitado, que solo puede alcanzar hasta cierto punto. No podemos ponerle límites a los dones que Dios concede. “Ojala que todo el pueblo de Dios fuera profeta y descendiera sobre todos ellos el Espíritu del Señor” Este es el deseo de Moisés al final de la primera lectura, y no quedara incumplido. El Señor verdaderamente nos ha dado el Espíritu Santo a todos nosotros. En nuestro Bautismos recibimos exactamente lo que Moisés esperaba. Todos tenemos la habilidad de profetizar, esto es de hablar la Palabra de Dios a todos aquellos que encontramos en el camino. De vez en cuando necesitamos que alguien nos recuerde que tenemos ese don y de la obligación que el mismo nos impone. La presencia del Espíritu Santo en nosotros nos obliga a predicar esperanza a los desesperados y conversión a aquellos cuyo corazón no está en el lugar correcto. Los quiero, reciban mi bendición y no se les olvide orar por mí. Baby Bottle Campaign kicks off today on Respect Life Sunday. Pick up a Baby Bottle in your church pew and fill it with your spare change to help Catholic Charities’ Mother and Child Assistance Fund provide help to women and chil-dren right here in Southern Minnesota. The campaign will end November 15, so please have the bottle back no later than Sunday, November 11. Return it to the container marked Baby Bottle in the main entrance of the church or drop it off at the rectory.
