Comments from Deacon Dale Brown We all like spectacular fireworks. They are exciting, impressive, exhilarating. The Church's first Pentecost had some spectacular fireworks. The Apostles and other Christians were gathered "in one place together". We do not know exactly where. Probably it was somewhere inside or near the Temple in Jerusalem, since right after the fireworks, crowds started to gather. It may have been the same large room where Jesus and the Apostles had eaten the Last Supper. We are not certain. So, they were all in one place, and then a thunderous noise like a strong wind, like a tornado, came from the sky. And then flames appeared. Flames of fire just appeared out of nowhere, spontaneously, hovering in the air. And these flames divided up and started floating through the air until they came to rest on each of the people gathered. But the fireworks didn't stop there. Suddenly, the Christians started speaking in languages that they didn't know. A crowd had gathered by now, with visitors from all over the world who were in Jerusalem for the festival. Each one heard the Christians explaining the gospel in their own language. It was a dramatic, spectacular display. But we would be wrong to conclude from this that the Holy Spirit's normal way of acting in our life is through dramatic fireworks. In fact, it's just the opposite. God's action in our life is most often gentle and hardly perceptible at first. How does Jesus send the Spirit to his Apostles after his resurrection? He breathes on them - quietly and subtly. How does St Paul describe the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church? Like the soul of a body - powerful, essential, but invisible and subtle. The Holy Spirit works quietly. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. It should be thought of more regularly and prayed to more often. Won’t you light it’s fireworks in your life!

Prayer for Protection in Time of Pandemic

O Mary,

you always brighten our

path as a sign of salvation

& of hope. We entrust our-

selves to you, Health of the

Sick, who, at the Cross,

took part in Jesus’ pain

while remaining steadfast

in faith.

O loving Mother,

you know what we need,

and we are confident you

will provide for us as at

Cana in Galilee.

Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician,

for those who have fallen ill,

for those who are vulnerable,

and for those who have died.

Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health

and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick

and seeking a cure.

Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of

the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon

himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead

us, through the Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection.

Amen.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God.

In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always

from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Amen.

May 31: PENTECOST One of the most important feast days in the church.

It concludes the Easter Season &

celebrates the beginning of the Church.

It always occurs 50 days after the death &

resurrection of Jesus.

Pentecost is the celebration of the person of the Holy Spirit

coming upon the Apostles, Mary, & the first followers of Je-

sus who were gathered together

in the Upper Room.

The Holy Spirit also gave the Apostles the other gifts and

fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission:

To go out and preach the Gospel to all nations.

It fulfills the New Testament promise from Christ

that the Apostles would be “clothed with power”

before they would be sent out to spread the Gospel.

FYI

The Upper Room in which Jesus and the Apostles shared the

LAST SUPPER, was the first Christian Church.

Prayer for Pregnant Mothers

Dear Father, we ask you to protect the little babies who are being knit together in their mothers’ wombs.

Comfort their mothers & fathers during the time they are growing & developing. Lord Jesus, give these smallest of

persons the strength to come into this world, to fully participate in your creation. Send your Holy Spirit to infuse their souls with love for you. After long, healthy, & loving lives, bring them safely home to your heavenly kingdom.

Amen.
