The season gets us in the mood for Christmas, the coming of Christ, and helps us prepare our hearts and our lives. It is a season of being joyful, living up to our name as St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy. The word ADVENT comes from the Latin word “adventus” which means “to come”. The mystery of the great day of Christmas has every right to the honor of being prepared for by prayer and works of penance. This period of preparation dates back at least to the fifth century. The celebration of Advent has a two-fold purpose. One is the penitential preparation for the coming of Christ. The liturgical color for Advent is purple, just like Lent—as both are seasons that prepare us for great feast days. Also Advent (like Lent) includes an element of penance in the sense of preparing, quieting and disciplining our hearts for the full joy of Christmas. This penitential dimension is expressed through the color purple, but also through the restrained manner of decorating the church and altar: for instance, we normally do not use flowers or other “decorations” around the altar during Advent +except, of course, for the Advent Wreath. Even the wreath, however, should be simple, without excessive decoration. The second purpose of Advent is our preparation for the final coming of the Son of Man. Advent is by no means a “mini” Lent. Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight. We don’t dwell on our sins and faults, as we do during Lent, although it is good to prepare by cleansing our heart of sins in order for Christ’s coming. Advent is a season of hope. As a mother-to-be prepares to become a mother, she has many hopes for her soon to be born child. She knows that the birth of her child will change her life forever. We, too, have many hopes that with the coming of Christ, our lives and our world will be transformed. May you have a blessed season of preparation and joyful waiting. Fr. Ken From t he Desk of Fr. Parish Mission Statement

Our Parish Family, under the influence of the Gospel, strives to be bold and fearless disciples of Jesus Christ. We witness to our Catholic

faith by living the Eucharist. We are the hands and feet of Christ in our service and in our joyful proclamation of the goodness of God.

Advent is my favorite season of the year. The season gets us in the mood for Christmas, the coming of Christ, and helps us prepare our hearts and our lives. It is a season of being joyful, living up to our name as St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy. The word ADVENT comes from the Latin word “adventus” which means “to come”. The

mystery of the great day of Christmas has every right to the honor of being prepared for by prayer and works of penance.

The Bottom Line A bishop was having a reception at the diocese’s ministry center, called the John Paul Auditorium, a fine old building with high ceilings. A string quartet was playing in a corner, but because the acoustics were so fine, the music flowed throughout. A visitor attended the reception and was quite impressed with both the architecture and the acoustic. He asked the diocesan director of development, “Of Course this magnificent auditorium is named for the late pope, right?” “No, “replied the director, “it’s named after John Paul, the business writer.” “Never heard of him,” snorted the visitor. “What did he write?” “A check,” said the development director.

IN FORMATION

This year’s Christian Service Christmas Giving Tree will be supporting the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. They have asked us to donate items for families who struggle to get needs that are not normally available to them. On the tags you will see a list of items that are needed for the families that will be getting food baskets (provided by the Capuchins), in addition to receiving these items. We ask that if you do choose a tag, that you bring back your unwrapped donation to the gathering space in the back of the church or to the parish office.

We ask that you have your donated items in by Monday, December 12th. Thank you for your continued support.

COATS FOR KIDS

Beginning this week and ending on Sunday December 18th, the Knights of Columbus will be collecting “Coats for Kids” during our annual drive for Holy Cross Children’s Services. A collection box will be located in the Gathering Space of the Church to deposit new unwrapped coats of all sizes for children in our area. Charity is one of the Founding Principles of the Knights of Columbus. God Bless you for your generosity!

Thanksgiving Thank You

The Thanksgiving meals offered free to the community at Newburg United Methodist Church were once again a huge success thanks to our parish par-ticipation.

Seven parishioners helped set up on November 23rd and 16 helpers volun-teered throughout Thanksgiving Day. Smiling faces enjoyed over 50 pies for dessert that were donated by our gener-ous parishioners from the choir pie sale. Checks totaling $215.00 were graciously accepted by the coordinator.

Thanks to everyone who supported this ecumenical outreach project.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION

As you prepare for this Christmas season, please don’t forget to add the parish to your gift list. You have a few options available for you to give:

• Dropping your Christmas envelope in the collection basket at Mass

• On-line at www.stmarycooj.org (see instructions in article below)

• By mail or by dropping your monetary gift off at the parish office.

Donations postmarked or received after December 31, 2016 will be recorded for the 2017 tax year. Your offertory package contains your Christmas envelope. These envelopes are ideal to use. Should you forget your envelope, you can write “for Christmas” on your check or on the outside of any envelope and your gift will be counted in the Christmas Collection. You have until January 15, 2017 to get your Christmas gift in. During the Christmas season, any offertory you make that is marked “for Christmas” does not get assessed tax from the Archdiocese. Another option available to you is to make a stock donation. Visit the AOD website http://www.aod.org/being-catholic/ways-to-give/share-your-treasure/stock-gifts/ for more details OR phone Carol, our bookkeeper at 313-977-6223.

Your Christmas gifts will be used for the operation of the parish. Our gas and electric bills are going to increase during the winter months and these Christmas funds will be of great help during those months. The parish is also responsible to pay the CSA shortfall if we should not meet our target. You have shown such great generosity towards St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, your home parish, through your prayers and your monetary gifts. Thank you and may the good Lord continue to bless you and your family.

THANK YOU!

Dear Parishioners of Saint Mary, Cause of Our Joy Parish, There certainly was a lot of JOY here at the Seminary on Halloween! Thank you SO MUCH for your candy donation to the seminarians at Sacred Heart Major Seminary this year. We spent the entire Halloween evening passing out thousands of pounds of candy to our neighborhood kids. We also provided games, snacks and prayer ministry to the kids and their families. Your donation helps us to witness to the love of Christ right here in the heart of the Archdiocese. Thank you again and God bless!
