Calling All Parishioners in the Medical Field

We are calling upon all our medical professionals to join us in participating in a refresher course on the proper use of our church AED machine. We hope we never have to use it; but should the need arise, our parishioners will be better taken care of. Once we have all volunteers lined up, we will then schedule the class/meeting. We do thank those who have al-ready answered the call by sharing your name. We hope to schedule a meeting for the training very soon. Please call the church office (687-5121) with your name and phone number if you have not al-ready answered this very important call.

St Vincent de Paul Society, St Mary’s of the Pines Conference A Request for Assistance from a Friend in Need in February Friend in Need receives $882 SS Retirement Benefits Her rent is $255, all bills included. She moved to Shreveport after being displaced and left homeless after hurricane Harvey hit Houston in September of 2018. She lost everything except a few clothes she managed to grab before being rescued. She saw an add in the paper for Cedar Hill Apartments, a rent-control apartment complex for people age 62 and older in Shreveport, while she was living with friends in the Baton Rouge area, and applied for an apartment. She called the St Vincent Help Line on February 21 requesting a mattress set. We contacted her, and she told us her story that all she had was a suit case with a few clothes. She was scheduled to move in on 02/25. Though your generosity, the parishioners of St May of the Pines and other Catholic Churches in the Shreveport Bossier area, St Vincent de Paul maintains a small storage area where we keep donated furniture and household items. She took procession of her apartment on Monday, February 25, but it was raining and we could not deliver her any-thing. We called her and offered to loan her an air mattress until we could deliver her furniture, but she said no she could sleep on the floor because she did not want to be too much trouble. At the time she called we did not have any mattress sets but purchased a reconditioned mattress set for her. On Tuesday morning, 02/26, we delivered the mat-tress set, bed frame, couch, two small recliners, two lamps, one end table, one small table with leaves, pots, pans, dishes and bed linens. We also brought her a box of food. At the time she only had one coffee cup. She was very appreciative and asked that we thank everyone who had donated. This is just one story of how your donations change the lives of others who are not as fortunate as we and in need of a Hand-Up to improve theirs.

Calls Received from the St Vincent de Paul help line for February 2019 Calls Received 45 Home Visits made 35 Hours of time spent in service 146 Miles driven in service 400 Food Baskets delivered 7 Furniture delivered 9 pieces plus pots, pans, dishes,

bed linens We are only 9 disciples of God and could use more volunteers to assist in God’s outreach to the Friends in Need in our area. Please remember us in your prayers and consider sharing your time and talent with us. With your kind donations, St Vincent DePaul can give that one person or family the Hand-Up that may help change their lives. Thank you for your prayers and donations, St Vincent de Paul Society, St Mary of the Pines Conference

MID-LENT CHECK-IN God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the Israel-ites: I AM sent me to you . . . The LORD, the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham,

the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to con-sider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrec-tion, to our reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repentance involves working to secure justice for all and helping our neighbor to live in God’s ways. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit.
