We give our flesh when we give our real self in all its weakness. We give our flesh when we keep loving even when it causes us pain. So here we are at various stages of our journey to the Promised Land. Jesus invites us to come as we are and he will give himself to us in communion. On the strength of this food we will be able to take the next step of love that will take us to our goal. The Father has drawn us here to be with his Son, coming to us through Word and Sacrament. Let us receive the Eucharist with gratitude as food for our journey!

Food for the Journey

Whenever we go on a journey, we must be sure that we have enough food to sustain us. It’s not much of a problem for travelers these days in America – because most people can stop almost anywhere and buy something to eat. But it wasn’t always this way a few generations ago.

Every human being is on a spiritual journey and we need spiritual nourishment along the way. In today’s

Gospel, Jesus speaks of himself as life-giving bread. He is offering himself as nourishment for our souls and it is through communion with him that we experience real life.

He tells us that the bread that he is giving is his ‘flesh’. By this he means his weakness, his vulnerability, his acceptance of the human condition with its pains and disappointments, but also with its utter dependence on the Spirit of God. It is the ‘flesh’ that connects us. It is the ‘flesh’ that draws us together in our common dependence upon God. We give our ‘flesh’ to someone when we give ourselves in all that it means to be part of the human condition. We give our flesh when we give our time, our activity, our energy, our work.

Diocesan Capital Campaign: ‘The Perfect Fit’ The Diocese of Crookston and the Sisters of Saint Benedict have announced the diocese’s intent to purchase the Mount Saint Benedict campus located in Crookston. The diocese has launched a capital campaign called ‘The Perfect Fit’ to finance the project. They are working to raise $12 million to purchase the property and an additional $3 million for a maintenance endowment. Bishop Emeritus Victor H. Balke is the Honorary Chairperson of the capitol campaign.

Bishop Richard E. Pates, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Crookston, has issued an invitation for people to contribute to the capital campaign. “With your help, the sisters’ facility, with its modern accommodations, offices, and chapel, will become the Pastoral Center of the Diocese of Crookston and a retreat center employed to deepen the faith of Catholics in parishes and schools across northwest Minnesota,” said Bishop Pates. “Importantly, the purchase will allow the sisters to continue to live their monastic communal life in a private section of the facility without an upsetting relocation.”

The current Mount Saint Benedict campus was built in 2015. It has five residential wings, two dining spaces, large and small meeting areas, 44 private retreat rooms, a chapel that holds 135, and office space. The entire building is handicap accessible and meeting areas have state of the art technology.

Two residential wings will be reserved for use by the sisters, who will rent the space from the diocese. They will also retain a few offices near the chapel. The reception area, parlors, dining facilities, large conference room and main chapel spaces will be shared with the diocesan pastoral and retreat center.

Two residential wings will be used as a regional retreat center with a commercial kitchen and dining facilities, large meeting space and chapel available. The peaceful grounds and location next to Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception are also very well suited for retreats. The space could be used for Cursillo weekends, pre-marriage retreats, priest study days, teacher workshops, parish staff retreats, committee meetings, and gatherings of groups such as the Knights of Columbus or Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

There are multiple ways to give to the project. The diocese welcomes one-time financial gifts, or pledges extending up to three years, with reminder notices delivered according to a preferred schedule. Checks should be made payable to the Diocese of Crookston Catholic Community Foundation. All gifts are tax deductible as provided by law and receipts will be provided. Gifts of grain, soybeans, land as well as wills and bequests can also be arranged. To discuss any of these options further, please contact Reathel Giannonatti, Executive Director of the Diocese of Crookston Catholic Community Foundation, at 218-281-4533.

Newman Centers at College Campus Soon your Graduates will be moving towards their future college. In most of the universities there is a Newman Center that cares for the spiritual needs of Catholic students. Newman Centers personnel have contacted us. If your college-going children want to be a part of the Campus Ministry Program, there are several ways to connect. One is through an app: Newman Connect app, which is free and can be found on the Apple and Google Play stores; or, you can sign up online at https://signupnc.newmanministry.com/. Please encourage your son / daughter to take advantage of this opportunity which provides spiritual enrichment in the college setting. ~ Ardis Johnson

A Milestone Year for Bishop Emeritus Balke In September, Bishop Emeritus Victor H. Balke will turn 90 and also celebrate the 45th anniversary of his Episcopal Ordination. An open house to recognize these milestones will take place at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston, on September 12th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. All Diocese of Crookston faithful are invited.

Bishop Balke arrived in the Diocese of Crookston from Illinois at the age of 44 and served as the sixth Bishop of Crookston from September 2, 1976, to November 30, 2007. His years as bishop were punctuated by a zeal for liturgy and care for his people in spiritual and practical ways.

After retiring, Bishop Balke lived in Moorhead until macular degeneration made driving to the church a problem. He moved to the rectory at Sacred Heart, East Grand Forks, in 2014. The rectory is adjacent to the church, making it more convenient for him to participate in parish life.

“These ninety years have been filled with countless blessings from God, and what comes to my mind are these words from one of our psalms: ‘You are my God, I thank you; my God, I praise you’,” said Bishop Balke. “My forty-five years as Bishop, both in service and in retirement, have been very joyfully spent with dedicated priests and deacons, with women and men in religious communities, and with wonderful and generous lay people; to all of them, I send my gratitude, love, and prayers.”

We thank the KC members of

St. Mother Teresa Council, namely:

Bob DeCrans, Jesse Clack, Doug Scraper & Chuck Tangeman for reinstalling the

pro-life monument at the side of our Lady of the Pines Church,

Nevis.
