Parish Mission Statement

The Parish of St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, inspired by Mary’s “Yes” and led by the Holy Spirit,

strives to be a faith-filled community, joyfully welcoming all to witness and to celebrate the Gospel.

Community Prayer for the Church

Eucharistic Adoration & Prayer

Monday, October 1

6:00-7:30pm in Church

This Monday and again on Monday,

October 15, we will have a time of

prayer for the church, the victim-

survivors of abuse, the sanctification of

bishops, priests and all those who work

in the church. Feel free to stop in for a

few moments of prayer, or stay the whole

time.

Each night the Eucharist will be exposed

in adoration. We will start with a Bible

reading and then continue in silence. We

will ask that no one prays aloud as to

give everyone the chance to pray as they

wish.

Please join us as we celebrate the feast of

St. Francis of Assisi who is the patron saint of animals.

Saturday, October 6 at Noon

We will meet at the baseball field (back of parking lot)

Anointing of the Sick

THIS Friday, October 5

The celebration of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is intended for anyone who

is seriously impaired by sickness, chronic illness, old age, addictions, or emotional

problems and for those who are about to undergo surgery, serious medical testing or

be admitted to the hospital. You do not need to receive the sacrament every month,

only when your medical condition changes drastically. The Sacrament of Anointing of

the Sick takes place monthly at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy. It will be this Friday,

October 5 beginning with the celebration of the 8:30am Mass.

To make arrangements to celebrate the sacrament at other times,

please contact our parish office. Patients in hospitals and residents

in nursing homes can be anointed if they did not celebrate the

sacrament prior to admission. They or their family members should

contact the institution’s Catholic chaplain to make similar

arrangements, or call the parish office.

With the beginning of

October right around the

corner it is once again

time for our Halloween

Candy Collection! For a

number of years we have

been supporting our local

seminarian, Dcn. Derik Peterman, and

collecting candy for Sacred Heart Major

Seminary. Each year the seminary

community opens their doors and their

hearts to over 2000 children from the

surrounding Detroit neighborhood so that

the kids can have a fun and safe place to

play games and trick-or-treat. In a similar

fashion, last year, our parish held a Trunk

or Treat event here at St Mary COOJ that

helped 400 kids safely celebrate

Halloween in our Community.

There are multiple ways that you can

help with these two events. First is to

drop candy off in the Gathering space

throughout October, and we will make

sure it gets to these two events for

distribution. Second, you can come to the

St Mary COOJ Trunk or Treat event on

Oct. 27th, 6:30-8:30, to distribute candy

in our parking lot (we will have more

articles giving detail about this in the

near future). Lastly, you can donate

money to either event: for our parish you

can just drop a well-marked envelop in

the collection basket, for Sacred Heart

checks can be made payable to “Sacred

Heart Major Seminary” with

“Halloween” on the memo line and sent

to: Sacred Heart Major Seminary

Joyful Women Adult Movie

Night – Pizza and a Movie!

Joyful Women is sponsoring a FREE

adult movie night in the Social Hall on

Thursday, October 4th, 2018. Movie,

popcorn and beverage provided FREE

of charge; pizza available for $1.00 a

slice.

The movie is Beauty and the Beast.

This (mostly) non-animated version of

the classic fairy tale is a live-action re-

telling, staying true to the original

music while updating the score with

several new songs. This is the journey

of Belle (Emma Watson), a beautiful

and independent young woman who is

taken prisoner by a beast (Dan Stevens)

in his castle. Despite her fears, she

befriends the castle's enchanted staff

and learns to look beyond the Beast's

hideous exterior and realize the kind

heart and soul of the true Prince within.

Rated PG.

Doors open at 5:30 pm, with movie

starting at 6:00 pm. All ladies and men

of the parish and their guests are

welcome! Metal folding chairs

provided … feel free to bring your own

more comfortable chair and/or cushion!

Fifth Sunday Rosary

This Sunday,

September 30

The Knights will once again be leading a

Fifth Sunday Rosary at 11:15 am this Sun-

day. This will be after the 10:00 Mass and

just before the Noon Mass. All are en-

couraged to come a few minutes early or

stay just a little bit longer to participate in

this communal devotion. If you have been

shy about starting this devotion, the

Knights will help you along. Charity,

Unity, and Fraternity are our guiding prin-

ciples; see you and your families there in

support of a Culture of Life!

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY

Next Sunday—LIFE CHAIN!

St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, is co-sponsoring a LIFE CHAIN with

LIFESPAN near the intersection of Warren & Wayne Rds. from 2-3:30 pm as a

link in the National Life Chain held on Respect Life Sunday. It is a visual statement of

solidarity by the Christian community that the Church supports the sanctity of life

from conception while praying for our nation & an end to abortion.

It’s important for our parish to participate as there is an Abortion Center in Westland

where pre-born babies are killed to the sixth month of pregnancy! We need to commit

ourselves to love and protect the preborn and their mothers – 96% who later regret

their abortion. Abortions are neither safe nor rare. Let’s challenge our community to

be aware and to care. (Very poor turnout last year).

We pray 90 min. holding one of the following provided approved pro-life signs:

“ABORTION KILLS CHILDREN”, “JESUS FORGIVES AND HEALS”,

“ADOPTION: THE LOVING OPTION”, “LORD, FORGIVE US AND OUR

NATION”, “ABORTION HURTS WOMEN”, “PRAY TO END ABORTION”,

“LIFE—THE FIRST INALIENABLE RIGHT”.

We need you! Bring a chair if you can’t stand and a rosary.

The car in America has become an emblem

for individuality and personal expression.

Sports fans fly team flags and yuletide

enthusiasts add a wreath to the front grill.

But Halloween aficionados are taking

celebrations to new heights. Trunk-or-Treat

celebrations provide the opportunity for

Halloween fans to deck out their car with

ready-made Halloween diorama that can

instantly be revealed in a parking lot, as

fellow tailgaters review the spectacle.

Trunk-or-treat is a safe, fun, community-

building activity, bringing people together

for an outdoor event one last time before

the winter cold sends us indoors.

Trunk-or-Treat is a fun-for-the-whole

family Halloween Alternative Event.

Families are invited to come to St. Mary,

Cause of Our Joy parking lot between

6:30pm and 8:30pm on Saturday, October

27th with your children to trick-or-treat.

Grandparents are invited to bring your

grandkids and join in the fun. Our

parishioners will be decorating their cars

(optional), vans or trucks starting at 5:45pm

Dear friends and family,

My last year at the seminary is now underway! My classes and other

obligations are already picking up, but I would like to catch you up on

what I have been up to. The last time I wrote was near the beginning of

my internship assignment at St. Edward on the Lake in Lakeport, MI.

My summer there was great! I learned a lot from my time with the

pastor and the people. As a deacon there, I had plenty more to do than

I did last summer. Besides visiting people in nursing homes and the hospital, I spent a

good deal of time preparing for preaching. I preached one Sunday per month and then

once during the week. That gave me a lot of good practice with the whole process and

more confidence in actually giving my homily. Preaching is incredible. It is during the

homily that the priest or deacon is to open up the scriptures as Our Lord did on the

road to Emmaus and to prepare the people for the Eucharistic feast. I know that I still

have much to learn in this area, but was excited to give it my best shot this summer at

the parish.

Also as a deacon, I got to baptize a few children and witness a marriage. One of the

baptisms was the first child of some college friends of mine. We all knew each other

from the church at Michigan State, St. John Student Center, and had our fair share of

fun together. Though all of the baptisms were amazing to perform, that one was par-

ticularly special because of my connection with the family. Later, another friend who

was at that baptism asked me what it was like. He wondered if my experience was

similar to a powerful encounter with the Holy Spirit one might have in a time of pray-

er. My answer to him was that it was related but very different. In a prayer experience

where God gives someone a particular grace, God intends the grace or experience for

that person. Whether it is a powerful emotional experience or simply a deeper

knowledge of God’s love, it is for that person and is more or less contained in them. In

a baptism, the grace is not for me. It is for the person I am baptizing. I am aware of the

presence of the Holy Spirit by faith but the feeling is different. Instead, it feels like the

Holy Spirit is passing through me, as water passes through a pipe. God is simply using

me as an instrument to pour His saving grace into the soul of someone else. Thank

you, Jesus!

Coming back to the seminary was so good. I was glad to catch up with friends, meet

the new seminarians, and jump into my sixth and final year of seminary. The classes I

am taking this semester are History of the Catholic Church in the US, Johannine Liter-

ature (The Gospel of John, his 3 letters, and Revelation), Theology of the New Evan-

gelization, Nature and Practice of Spiritual Direction, and an Integrating Seminar. It

looks like I will have a lot of reading but not too many papers to write this semester.

Of course, we still have the regular schedule of silent prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours

(praying the psalms), and Mass each day. For my ministry assignment this year, I will

continue to go up to St. Edward on the weekends to serve at the Sunday liturgies.

Clearly, this is going to be a busy year! In addition to life as a seminarian, it has been

a difficult time in the Church in general. But I was very encouraged in coming back to

the seminary. There are more men here than there were last year; to the point that new

dorm rooms and classrooms had to be arranged. And all of us are excited to follow

Jesus more closely as we grow in holiness and prepare to serve Him as His priests.

Mark your calendars, because my ordination will be on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at

Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit! As always, I truly appreciate your continued

prayers.

Until next time, I remain yours in Christ,

Dcn. Derik Peterman
