Solemnnity of the AAssumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
August 15th
~~ August 9, 2020 ~ 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners: Every Summer hidden in the midst of August we have the beautiful
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which we will celebrate this Saturday, August 15th. Although there is no obligation this year to attend Mass, in addition to the 8:00am Mass there will be Mass at 12:15pm to mark this important Solemnity of Our Lady.
It is a dogmatic truth of our Catholic Faith that Mary, after completing the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven. Our belief in Mary’s Assumption flows from our belief in her Immaculate Conception. Death entered the world as a consequence of sin and since Mary was preserved from sin from the very moment of her conception, her body, which bore the Son of God, was spared the corruption of the grave and was assumed immediately into Heaven. Therefore, the Immaculate Virgin Mary already shares fully, Body and Soul, in the Resurrection of her Son, Jesus.
Mary’s Assumption fills us with hope. Unlike Mary, we are infected with sin. Although our souls are immortal and will be purified even after death in anticipation of Heaven, our bodies will return to the dust of the earth awaiting the Resurrection on the Last Day. But what God has already done for Mary is the promise held out to us by the Power of the Cross and Resurrection of her Son, Jesus. As the Church prays for the deceased in the Funeral Mass: “Lord, grant that he/she who was united with your Son in a death like his, may also be one with him in his Resurrection, when from the earth he will raise up in the flesh those who have died, and transform our lowly body after the pattern of his own glorious body.”
Jesus’ Power over sin and death is illustrated in today’s Gospel. We hear that Jesus had the disciples get into a boat and precede Him to the other side while He spent some time alone in prayer. Then during the night the wind was against the boat and it was being tossed about by the waves. The disciples were terrified, and Jesus comes to them walking on the waters and assures them: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” That boat is an image of the Church, and Jesus will always be with His Church to make sure that this “boat” and all its’ passengers will make its way through the rough waters of this world to arrive safely at the shores of Heaven.
In Sacred Scriptures, the image of turbulent waters is an image of the forces of evil and of death. By walking on the waters and calming the waves, Jesus silences the forces of evil and walks over the waters of death – an image of what He would accomplish for us by His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Jesus’ Power over evil and death flows into us in the waters of Baptism and is deepened within us in the Eucharist as the Power of His Cross and Resurrection is renewed in our midst at every Mass and His Risen Life deepened within us as we eat His Body and drink His Blood. As Jesus said: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him and I will raise him up on the last day.”
In our own lives we are so often tossed about by the waves – all the trials and worries and fears that we face, especially in these times. So often when we are going through some difficult trial we may not feel the presence of Jesus. But when things calm down and we take time to reflect, we realize that He was with us all along giving us the strength we needed when we needed it. And we have the greatest assurance of His Presence in the most precious gift of the Eucharist where He continues to say to us what He said to the terrified Apostles in the Gospel, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid.” May God bless us all.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Matthew J. Furey

The RCIA is the process by which our Parish Community assists men and women to respond to God’s call, to
become fully initiated into the Church through the
reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation. It is also appropriate for those who are baptized in other Christian denomination, wishing to fully embrace life in the Catholic Christian community. The process begins in September and concludes at the Easter Vigil the following year. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. in the Nativity Center. Those interested should contact the parish office for details @ 845-473-4222.
The Religious Education Program needs teachers and aides for various grade levels for the 2020-2021 school year. Because of social distancing, the number of children allowed in each classroom will be limited. We also need
certified nurses, first responders, or EMTs to help during our class times. Classes are held on Tuesday nights from 5:30PM-7:00PM and on Wednesday nights from 6:15PM-7:45PM. Our sessions last for 90 minutes per week for 30 weeks. Please contact the office at (845) 471-8728 and leave a message and I will return your call. I can also be reached by email at [email protected]. Our Religious Education Program relies on people who volunteer their time and talents to teach God’s children about their faith. Thank you for your help! Keep safe and well.

We have been back to a full schedule of Sunday and Weekday Masses now for more than a month. Things seem to be running very smoothly with all the necessary precautions in place for the safety of all. Thank you to Peter Strafford and all our volunteers who are at every Mass helping to make everything run so smoothly. Here is a recap of the procedures in place:
1) Up to 50% if the Church’s capacity can now be in attendance to the extent the proper social distancing can be maintained. For us, with every other pew roped off, not much more than 200 people can be in attendance at any one Mass.
2) The Nativity Center is set up for live streaming of the Mass in case we reach capacity in the Church. There are also speakers set up outside the church if anyone prefers to stay outside on the steps or in the parking lot to listen to the Mass and come inside to receive Holy Communion.
3) Everyone must wear a mask in order to enter the Church and keep it on while inside throughout the Mass. Please make sure your mouth and nose are covered. Although this can be a bit uncomfortable, we have to do this for now. Please maintain the six-foot distancing in the pews and on the Communion line.
4) When receiving Holy Communion, please give every consideration to receiving on the palm of your hand for now while we are in this pandemic. If you are extremely uncomfortable receiving in the hand, please wait until all have received and then come up at the end. Please use the hand sanitizers at the entrance to the Church when coming in.
5) All the pews, surfaces, door handles, and bathrooms are being sanitized after every Mass. We are using a peroxide base multi surface cleaner and disinfectant multi-purpose spray which is EPA registered and CDC approved.
6) Thank you for your patience at this difficult time for all of us.
This clothing shed is closed for the time being, due to ongoing economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to reopen at some point in the future. Please DO NOT leave donations or items of any kind outside of the shed. This is called dumping, and it’s illegal.
to date our parish has received 130,945.00 in pledges/gifts toward our goal of 175,500.00 for the 2020 Cardinal’s Appeal, from 371 families. Thank you for your kind support.
The COVID pandemic has affected everyone in so many ways. As for our Parish, we have seen a slow return to Sunday Mass. Many are still unsure and afraid, and that is understandable. Our weekly collections, which are the main source of our Parish income, are down about 30%. That is about $16,000 a month. Over time this will have more and more of a negative impact on our Parish finances. We realize that many of our parishioners are under financial hardship during this pandemic, and that we can only do the best we can. If you choose not to attend Mass at this time, please continue to support the parish, if you can, by mailing in or dropping off your offertory envelop at the Rectory. You can also continue to support the Parish by signing up for on-line giving – WESHARE. Go to stmartindeporres.org, scroll down to online giving and click on https://stmartindeporres.churchg to sign up. Thank you for your love and support of our Parish. May God bless you and your family with His Peace.
