DDecember 8, 2019 ~ Second Sunday of Advent
Dear Parishioners: How beautiful our Church looks for this Holy Season of Advent, a serene and noble simplicity in anticipation of the
joy of Christmas. It obviously doesn’t happen without a lot of work. A special thank you to the men of our Knights of Columbus who spent much of the day before and the day after Thanksgiving getting the Church inside and out ready for this Holy Season.
Now we come to the Second Sunday of Advent when each year the Gospel takes us back to the Jordan River and the preaching of John the Baptist. The people of Israel patiently waited for centuries for the promised Messiah to come. All the prophets spoke of His coming up until John the Baptist who pointed Him out when at last He came. John appeared in the desert preaching from the top of his lungs as the Church continues to do today: “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.” John is the “Voice crying out in the wilderness” spoken of by the Prophet Isaiah in our first reading: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” That is, make straight His path into our lives and into our hearts.
Repentance, conversion, is at the heart of our Advent preparation. That is, turning away from the darkness of sin and turning toward the light of Christ. What are the sins, what are the obstacles in my life preventing the coming of Jesus more fully into my heart? Whatever it may be, our Lord wants to take it from us and give us His Peace. That is precisely what Jesus does for us every time we come to Him and make a good Confession in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. God’s Love is so much stronger than our sins. Indeed, the more serious our sins the more intense is His desire to embrace us and welcome us home. There is no greater gift we could receive this Christmas than the inner peace, serenity, and joy that flow from this beautiful Sacrament of Divine Mercy.
The Prophet Isaiah and John the Baptist are two great Advent figures we hear from in today’s readings, and this week we celebrate two great Feasts of the greatest Advent figure of all, Our Blessed Mother Mary, with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on Monday and the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe on Thursday. From the very moment of her conception, Mary was free from sin and filled with Grace. That is why Jesus was born of her, to free us from sin and fill us with Grace. One hundred and two years ago at Fatima, Mary told us that her Immaculate Heart would triumph in the end over all the evil in the world. For a heart like Mary’s - pure, humble, undefiled, free from sin and filled with Grace - is more powerful than all the evil in the world put together, and the only way to true and lasting Peace.
May we live Advent well so that we can experience in our hearts this Christmas that Peace that Christ was born to bring us and that nothing in this world could ever give or take away. May God bless us all.
Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Matthew J.
