~~ April 19, 2020 ~ Sunday of Divine Mercy
Dear Parishioners: There were no overflowing crowds here or in Churches throughout the world as there usually
are for Easter, but the Church here and throughout the world is celebrating Easter nonetheless. Christ is Risen! He is truly Risen! Nothing can take our joy away from us for He is with us.
Today is the Octave Day of Easter as we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This beautiful and powerful devotion to our Lord’s Mercy came out of private revelations to a cloister nun in Poland, Sister Faustina, during the 1920’s and 1930’s when there were so many manifestations of evil going on in the world (on the threshold of World War II and the holocaust). Saint John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina on the Second Sunday of Easter in 2000, and at that time instituted this Feast of Divine Mercy to be celebrated each year on the Second Sunday of Easter.
The Divine Mercy message adds nothing new to Divine Revelation, but re-presents for our times the most fundamental teaching of the Gospel: that we trust in God’s mercy, that we seek His Mercy especially in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and then extend that mercy to others by forgiving one another as Christ has forgiven us and dedicating ourselves to works of Mercy. And how we see the works of Mercy being done by so many in these days caring for the sick, in the doctors, nurses, first responders putting themselves at risk caring for others, in those putting themselves at risk in providing vital services, in those giving comfort to those grieving or struggling from anxiety, in so many looking out for the needs of others. How much these times remind of our dependence on God and on others.
Our Lord made a special promise to St. Faustina that all who make a good Confession and receive Holy Communion in honor of this Feast of Divine Mercy will obtain complete forgiveness of sins and release from all punishments due to sin. Obviously the inability to make a good Confession and receive Holy Communion is beyond your control under the current extraordinary circumstances, but please make a sincere Act of Contrition and an Act of Spiritual Communion with the intention to get to Confession and receive Holy Communion when it becomes possible and the flood gates of Grace and Mercy will be open to you nonetheless.
I love the image of Divine Mercy which Jesus gave to Saint Faustina, with rays radiating out from within His Sacred Heart, representing the blood and water that flowed from His wounded side on the Cross, a font of Grace and Mercy flowing out into the world and into our souls through the sacraments, washing away sin and giving New Life.
We continue to see so much sin and evil in our world, but Easter assures has that God’s love is stronger than evil, stronger than our sins, stronger than death. Let us continue to implore the Mercy of God “in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world,” as we pray in the Divine Mercy Chaplet. As Saint John Paul II put it, “God has placed a limit on evil in the world: Divine Mercy.” Indeed, our Lord revealed to Saint Faustina that: “The world will never find Peace until it turns to my Mercy.”
Let us pray that His Peace will at last come to our world, to our country, to our families, and to every human heart. In the face of these troubling times we are in, let us always keep in our hearts that beautiful and simple Divine Mercy prayer: “Jesus, I trust in You.” May God bless us all. The message of The Divine Mercy is simple.
It is that God loves us – all of us. And, He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.
The History of the Chaplet of The Divine Mercy
In 1935, St. Faustina received a vision of an angel sent by God to chastise a certain city. She began to pray for mercy, but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly she saw the Holy Trinity and felt the power of Jesus’ grace within her. At the same time she found herself pleading with God for mercy with words she heard interiorly: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us. (Diary, 475) As she continued saying this inspired prayer, the angel became helpless and could not carry out the deserved punishment (see 474). The next day, as she was entering the chapel, she again heard this interior voice, instructing her how to recite the prayer that our Lord later called "the Chaplet." This time, after "have mercy on us" were added the words "and on the whole world" (476). From then on, she recited this form of prayer almost constantly, offering it especially for the dying. In subsequent revelations, the Lord made it clear that the Chaplet was not just for her, but for the whole world. He also attached extraordinary promises to its recitation. Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you (1541). Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death (687). When they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior (1541). Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this Chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy (687). I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy (687). Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. (1731) Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist, so it is especially appropriate to use it after having received Holy Communion at Holy Mass. It may be said at any time, but our Lord specifically told St. Faustina to recite it during the nine days before the Feast of Mercy (the first Sunday after Easter). He then added: "By this Novena, [of Chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls." (796) You can join us in praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3:00pm this Divine Mercy Sunday before the Blessed Sacrament. We will send it to you through Flocknotes.
HHOW TO PRAY THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. (Repeat 3 times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You! Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostle's Creed For each of the five decades (On each “Our Father” bead of the rosary, pray) Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. (On each of the 10 “Hail Mary” beads, pray) For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Concluding prayer (Repeat 3 times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.
Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You Sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though You were
already there, I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You; permit not that I should ever be separated from You. Amen.
Nine Day Novena for an end to the
Coronavirus Pandemic (as adapted from Bishop Douglas J. Lucia
special novena prayer for an end to Coronavirus pandemic) O Mary, full of Grace, Patroness of this nation and Mother of the Church, in this time of illness and worldwide need we seek your intercession for the human family before your Son’s throne of grace and mercy. We ask for strength in adversity, health in weakness, and comfort in sorrow. Help us Oh Blessed Mother to be filled with confidence and trust in the tender compassion of our God. Let us not be afraid like our own St. Martin de Porres who entrusted his life and ministry among the outcast of society into the care of our Divine Physician. Continue to watch over all who are sick as well as those who care for them and give wisdom to all who are seeking a cure. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen Thank you to all who have been continuing your support of our church and for your generous Easter donations at this difficult time.
