Ash Wednesday

Many of our parishioners today, especially our young adults, are living in a society that tells them not to believe in the need for penance or to think about death and faith. We are told that sin and death are to be mocked. As Catholics, we are now entering a time in our church of penance, a time to reflect on death. We do this as we unite ourselves with Jesus in his death and resurrection. In his dying, we see the suffering, and in His rising, we also are resurrected. This coming Wednesday we invite all of our congregation to receive ashes on their foreheads. It is a day that symbolizes two things, death and repentance. The ashes symbolize the dust; from death, we decompose to dust. That dust is represented by the ashes.

We will spend time this Lent focusing on our own mortality and on our own sinfulness. We go into this solemn time of the year but still wait in great anticipation for the joy of Easter. Jesus died for our sins and with His resurrection, we gain Christ’s ultimate victory over sin.

Closing of Ordinary Time ServicePlease join us on Tuesday, Feb. 25 as we clear the altar and close the triptych doors. We go from a beautifully decorated altar to a bare empty space to prepare us for weeks of penance. We will then burn last year’s palms to create ashes.

There will be an ice cream social immediately following the closing service. It is our Fat Tuesday celebration before we begin a time of fasting and entering our penitential season.

1 | TEACHING RELIGION Fr. Jacob was a huge help at St. Cecilia School last week when he

jumped in to help at the school with a number of the teachers home sick. He taught religion

classes and really enjoyed spending time at the school with the upper grade students.

2 | HELLO, STEPHEN JAMES! Cody and Angela Egner welcomed their new baby boy on

February 9. He was 7 lbs. and 15 oz. He joins big brothers Charlie and Patrick.

3 | SOCIAL ACTION COMMISSION St. Anthony parishioners Malachi Lawrence and

Dave Scharfenberger are currently serving on the Archdiocesan Social Action Commission.

This is the second time in the last 5 years that St. Anthony has had two representatives on

the commission.

4-5 | WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD Welcome, Parker Quinn Vitris, daughter of Mat-

thew and Maureen Vitris, who was baptized by Msgr. Francis Schoenauer. Welcome, Vincent

Thomas Calhoun, son of Christopher and Kathryn Calhoun, who was baptized by Fr. Jacob.

6 | FIRST COMMUNION Last Saturday choir director and organists Sarah and Pete

Schmid celebrated their son Isaacs’s First Holy Communion at St. Margaret-St. John.

7 | ST. CECILIA 8TH GRADE DINNER The meal prepared by the teachers and served by

the 8th grade students was over the top! What an amazing evening of delicious food and

wonderful company. Thank you to all of those that attended and helped our students raise

money to go on their class trip to Washington, DC. The ambiance was really fitting for such

an extravagant meal. It was also so much fun to play Top Chef as we voted for the appetizers,

main course, and desserts! What a great idea and a fun night!

8 | ST. ANTHONY LENTEN RETREAT Monsignor Frank Lane will be presenting a Lenten

talk at St. Anthony Church. On Tuesdays, March 3, 10, 24 and 31 at 7 PM during Lent. His

series “Catholicism and Social Justice—What’s the History?” promises to be a wonderful

evening of information. The sessions are free.

If we have proper fear of the Lord, the visionary Hermas is told, we have no reason to fear Satan. The devil has no real power when we do the will of God.

Need Your Taxes Done Today?This is a great opportunity for low-income and elderly tax payers and students to get help filing their returns. Appointments can be made for for 6 and 7 PM on February 24; March 2,16, 23, and 30; and April 13 at Xavier’s Cintas Center in Banquet Room 1 & 2. Parking is available in the center’s lots.

You must bring: your social security card for yourself, spouse, and dependents (no exceptions), proof of identity with photo ID (i.e driver’s license), all W-2 and 1099 forms and all other income and expense documentation. FORM 1095-A (for insurance purchased through the Marketplace under the Affordable Care Act) un-less the taxpayer and all dependents were covered by health insurance. If possible, it is helpful to bring your federal and state tax returns from last year as well.

Note: In the event of inclement weather, the VITA site will follow Xavier University school closures. If Xavier evening classes are cancelled due to snow, tax return preparation services will not be available.

Dresser Project 2020For quite a number of years, Saint Cecilia parish has generously contributed to a “dresser project.” Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year’s dresser can be found in the church vestibule with a list of suggested items. We are collecting baby items through this Sunday, February 23. The participation of everyone throughout the region is welcome and appreciated!

St. Margaret—St. John Parish Lenten Fish Fries will be held on February 28, March 6 & 13 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm.

We will again have our Fried Fish Dinner, Crab Cake Dinner & Alaskan Baked Dinner with 2 sides for $9.00.

Also available A La Carte: Fish Sandwich, Macaroni and Cheese, Baked

Beans, Cheese Pizza, Dinner Salad, Cole Slaw, Onion Rings, French Fries, Baked Potato and Steamed Veggies.

Desserts also available for an additional charge. We need volunteers...Can you help? Please call the Parish Office.

We need help prepping on Friday afternoon at 1:00 pm before each Fish Fry, taking orders & money, helping with the Dessert Booth, clean up, etc. If you can’t work but would be able to bake desserts, that would also be appreciated. Thank you!
