Students are challenged to take greaterpersonal responsibility for learning and tomanage more complex tasks.

Developmentally, students begin to dealwith issues of friendship and peer groups.The teachers work as a team with parents tohelp meet these challenges.

Fifth GradeStudents are able to use their skill base toexplore content areas in depth. Literaturehas become the core of the readingcurriculum. Students are encouraged toexpand their writing skills, using greaterdetail and a variety of styles. Statistics andalgebraic concepts are introduced in math.Religion, science and social studies are richwith detail and further challenge younglearners. Research projects integratereading and writing with the core content.Religious instruction includes marks of the

focus on algebra and problem solving whilestill emphasizing the importance of applyingbasic skills to more complex equations. The6th grade science lab provides students withregular hands-on experiments. Religionchallenges students with the study of theChurch, Sacraments, and Church history.Students continue to develop their Spanishlistening, speaking and writing skills.

Students are expected to takeresponsibility for learning and to understandtheir place in God's world. They are encour-aged to respect God and to love one another.

programs as well as Apple applications.

St. Luke IntermediateFourth GradeFourth grade is a major step in a child'sformal education; they increase theirapplication of skills and learn to furtherintegrate subject material. Students applyskills to a literature-based reading program.Writing skills are expanded to cover manyliterary conventions. Public speaking skillsare enhanced through oral presentations.Math instruction begins to move to high-order skills and concepts. Social studiesinstruction focuses on Indiana history, usingprojects, field trips and activities to integrateliterature and textbook material. Sciencestresses both content knowledge andscientific process skills. We continue tofocus on growing in a community of faith bylearning more about the Church, vocations,and the Sacraments. Our teachers continueto include direct instruction with flexible

Church, states of life, and a family lifeprogram. Students develop a novice level oflistening, speaking and writing Spanish.

Teachers work with parents to guideenthusiastic learners to best use their God-given talents. Teaching strategies continueto include direct instruction with flexiblegrouping, based on student performanceand needs.

Sixth GradeSixth grade is a year of growth and change asstudents begin the shift to early adolescence.Teachers work to increase the challenge ofcore subjects and to keep studentsmotivated and engaged using researchprojects and oral presentation.
