Fr. Noah

Dear Community of St. Luke,

As we observe the July 4th holiday, I thought it would be important to recall a few pertinent passages from THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH regarding “The Family and Society”. Our Catholic

teaching supports the freedoms we enjoy in our society, and broadens the scope of our freedom. Let’s pray today in thanks-giving to be American citizens, and to be a presence throughout the world for good, justice and that peace that only Christ can give.

THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH,

Numbers 2207, 2211 and 2213:

2207 The family is the original cell of social life. It is the natural society in which husband and wife are called to give themselves in love and in the gift of life. Authority, stability, and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundations for

freedom, security, and fraternity within society. The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honor God, and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into life in society.

2211The political community has a duty to honor the family, to assist it, and to ensure especially:

the freedom to establish a family, have children, and bring them up in keeping with the family's own moral and religious convictions;the protection of the stability of the marriage bond and the institution of the family; the freedom to profess one's faith, to hand it on, and raise one's chil-dren in it, with the necessary means and institutions; the right to private proper-ty, to free enterprise, to obtain work and housing, and the right to emigrate;in keeping with the country's institu-tions, the right to medical care, assis-tance for the aged, and family benefits;

the protection of security and health, especially with respect to dangers like drugs, pornography, alcoholism, etc.;the freedom to form associations with other families and so to have represen-tation before civil authority.15

2213Human communities are made up of persons. Governing them well is not limited to guarantee-ing rights and fulfilling duties such as honoring contracts. Right rela-tions between employers and employees, between those who govern and

citizens, presuppose a natural good will in keeping with the dignity of hu-man persons concerned for justice and fraternity.

Blessings to you and your family on this patriotic holiday,

Prayer

How many of us have, at some point, thought that we would like to find more time for our prayer life, but we are just too busy?

Perhaps, we would do well to ask ourselves the question: Whose time is it, anyway? With an understanding of stewardship, we would realize that it is all God’s time. Time is a gift from God, and only God knows the total amount that we really have left. We have often heard about the three “Ts”--time, talent, and treasure. To be a true steward of time begins with the recognition that all time belongs to God and that our responsibility is to use it faithfully.

If it is God’s time, how can we not spend at least a small sum of it in his presence through prayer? Making time to pray is, first and foremost, a decision of faith. Do you believe that, if you give to God, then God will give you all the time you need? Do you believe that God’s love for you is real? If so, your relationship needs your gift of time just an any other loving relationship does. Time in prayer is about putting yourself in the way of Jesus - the way of love.

It is God’s time. Have faith. Make time to pray!

Rachel’s Vineyards Retreats

Through Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats, women and men will be immersed in a spiritual experience that lasts an entire weekend. The retreat addresses the deep spiritual wounds

of abortion. Participants experience their sadness and grief in the company of others who share their pain. The retreat focuses on God’s unconditional love and forgiveness in a confidential atmosphere. Memories of abandon-ment, pain and confusion are replaced by reconciliation and peace. The retreat team consists of a priest, therapist(s) and facilitators. The next retreat is July 16-18, 2010. To learn more contact Sister Diane at 317-236-1521 or Bernadette Roy at 317-831-2892. All calls are completely confidential.

Dignity in a Time of Need

The Saint Vincent de Paul Client Choice Food Pantry (3001 E. 30th St.) operates in a customer-choice model like a grocery store, allow-ing customers, after a brief inter-view and consultation, to actually shop for food. This model honors and uplifts the dignity and ethnic diversity of the people they serve, promoting more efficient distribu-tion of their charitable resources and minimizing waste.

Shoppers are assigned a quantity of points that are used for the shopping experience.Volunteers serve a critical func-tion at the Pantry by stocking and organizing food items and by help-ing customers and their families as they shop. When shoppers have made their selections, the food is packaged and prepared for them to take home.

SVdP needs your help! St. Luke

has been assigned next Saturday, July 31, as our workday. Volunteers should contact either Joe Wagner, 841-0053; [email protected] or Ken Crook, 257-7705; [email protected].
