Inside this Issue

Well, our students from St. Lawrence all arrived safely to FSU for our early summer session, and we welcomed them into the Center for Global Engagement building. We gave them a thorough orientation to life, studies, and work in the United States, and to making the most of intercultural interactions. I think they really enjoyed themselves. They made friends with their FSU peer mentors, and developed great relationships with their roommates and classmates from all around the world. I think that the students really got a lot out of their class, too Service Leadership with Dr. Robert A. Brymer, of FSU’s Dedman School of Hospitality. And, the week ended with a fish fry at the FSU outdoor facility called the Reservation, followed by a closing activity. Quite a number of students told me, during their closing activity, that their favorite aspect of the week was the opportunities they had had to engage in rewarding cross-cultural interactions with students from other cultural backgrounds, as well as the Center for Global Engagement staff and their teacher. That was music to our ears, as that is what we are trying to achieve at the Center for Global Engagement...

One of the wonderful aspects of our FSU Special Academic Summer Programs is the relationship that develops between your students and our FSU students who serve as peer mentors. Students often tell me, that the “peer mentors became their best friends.” And, I fully expect Colleen, Amanda, and Austin (pictured below, from left to right) to maintain their relationships with many of your students into the future. You might even see some of the peers coming over to visit your students at home one of these days.

Because the peers live in residence hall rooms on the same floors with your students and spend time with them in the afternoon and evenings when all of the class work is done; and because they eat together, and play together, and share openly about their life experience; our peers develop very close relationships with your students. The peers share with your students about their perceptions of US American university culture. And they get an excellent opportunity to learn from your students as well about life at universities in other parts of the world.

What Your Students Did at FSU

Upon arrival to Tallahassee, they spent over a week with us on the lovely FSU campus before heading to Orlando to begin their Walt Disney World International College Program.

Arrival Day and the first weekend at FSU

Arrived, checked in and emailed home to let family know they had arrived safely

Took an FSU campus tour

Relaxed and enjoyed free time

Learned about what to expect in Orientation

Monday through Friday

Attended an American Etiquette workshop and Welcome Luncheon with the VP for Student Affairs and Cindy Green the Director of the Center for Global Engagement.

Took their Service Leadership Class

Went on Field trips to the lovely Sandestin Beach and Resort and Southwood Gold Club

Ate at the Suwannee Dining Hall and at Fresh Foods

Completed J-1 Orientation

Attended a Cross-Cultural Seminar

Shopped at the FSU Bookstore

Learned about what to expect at Walt Disney World

Saturday and Sunday

Attended a Closing Activity and Farewell Fish Fry at the Rez, FSU’s lakeside recreational facility

Went to an FSU baseball game

Ate a yummy sushi dinner and showed off talents in the CGE TALENT SHOW!!!

Departed FSU for the Walt Disney World Resort, and arrived there safely in the company of Special Academic Programs Director, Laura Dobson and Jessica Driemeier.
