From the Pastor 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time - A September 27, 2020

A KINDLY KING. A cute, English Christmas carol composed in the 1850’s tells the tale of the first Czechoslovakian Saint: Wenceslaus, whose Feast Day is tomorrow. Since we have a saintly doubleheader on September 28, we wrote about Saint Lawrence

Ruiz, the first Filipino Saint, in last week’s bulletin; today it’s Saint Wenceslaus, about whom many only know what is told of him in the carol that bears his name: ‘Good King Wenceslaus.’ Here are a few lines:

“Good King Wenceslaus looked out On the feast of Stephen*,

When the snow lay round about Deep and crisp and even;

Brightly shone the moon that night Though the frost was cruel,

When a poor man came in sight, Gath'ring winter fuel.”

The carol then sings of how the king followed his page through the snow to bring the needy man provisions; but the frost and chill was too much for his [probably] ill-clad assistant, so the kindly king went before his servant through the snow and slush, which led to a miracle:

“In his master's steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted;

Heat was in the very sod Which the Saint had printed.

Therefore, Christian men, be sure Wealth or rank possessing,

Ye who now will bless the poor Shall yourselves find blessing.”

However, this cute Christmastime miracle [*The

Feast of Stephen is 12/26; our first Christian martyr gets

the day of honor after Christmas.] is NOT why the King is a Saint; more on that after praying his Collect:

Collect - Saint Wenceslaus, Martyr

O God, who taught the Martyr Saint Wenceslaus to place

the heavenly Kingdom before an earthly one, grant through his prayers that,

denying ourselves, we may hold fast to you with all our heart.

Through our Lord Jesus … for ever and ever. Amen .

KING & MARTYR. What many say about the easy life of Royalty and of Saints is false; for Saint Wenceslaus could be the poster child for dysfunctional families! He was the eldest son [born circa 903-907] of a devoutly Catholic Bohemian Duke, Wratislaw, and a pagan who converted but never truly adopted Catholicism, Princess Dragomir. After his father’s death in 921, he became ‘king,’ a title posthumously given to him. Since he was only about 13, his father’s mother or grandmother, Saint Ludmilla [Feast Day: 09/16], served as regent until he was 18. She was later strangled with her veil in her chapel by order of her fiercely anti-Christian daughter-in-law. Princess Dragomir then strove to destroy the Catholic Faith, which she, her husband, and the Slavic peoples, had learned from the future Saints Cyril and Methodious, [Feast Day: 02/14] by purging Catholics from public office, closing churches, and preventing anyone from teaching Catholicism.

GOOD KING WENCESLAUS. As a child, he felt called to be a monk, but he accepted the crown and all the headaches that go with it. Untainted by his evil mother, he had her banished instead of executing as was the norm. He was a man of deep prayer; he was generous to orphans, widows, prisoners, and all those in need; he built or rebuilt churches; defended faithful clergy; strove to unify Bohemia; and he sought peaceful means to settle ecclesial and political disputes. One day, while entering church for holy Mass, renegade Priests locked the doors, his mother’s henchmen tackled and wounded him, and his brother dealt the mortal stab wound. But on his deathbed, he forgave his brother, Boleslaus the Cruel, for being complicit in his murder. A few days later, Good King Wenceslaus died on what is now his Feast Day: September 28, 935.

PRAY FOR OUR LEADERS’ MORALITY. While we, too, have our many ecclesial and political differences, we must pray that our leaders learn to imitate Saint Wenceslaus. Not surprisingly, the Nazis tried to erase all references to him during their reign of terror. May we never allow any State to stop or hinder the Church from fulfilling her divine calling to guide the nations on earth! Saint

Wenceslaus, pray for us.

In Christ,
