Remembering Our Departed Loved Ones
A Message from Father Brian ~ With my dad having passed away just a few months ago, I’m anticipating that this All Souls Day will have a very different “feel” for me than almost any other I’ve experi-enced. All Souls Day represents the Church’s invitation to lift up our hearts in prayer for every man, woman, and child who has ever lived and is now deceased, especially those who may still be awaiting full union with the Lord in paradise. While the feast is literally a day to pray for ALL who have died—saints and sinners alike—most of us naturally focus our thoughts on those we ourselves have known and for whom we may continue to grieve, confi-dent that the Lord is full of gentleness and mercy in judg-ing them. There is something very poignant and tender about November 2nd, as the Church encourages us to remember spouses, parents, siblings, relatives, friends, even our own children, who have crossed the threshold of death, but whom we trust are “in the hands of God,” as the Book of Wisdom so beautifully says. Over the years of my priesthood, I’m afraid I’ve noticed a gradual decline in the importance people seem to place on praying for the dead, at least in a liturgical setting like Mass on All Souls Day. Even though the Scriptures for the liturgy are so deeply consoling, and the Mass itself such a profound expression of hope, many Catholics seem to have lost a sense of the wonderful privilege we have in gathering around the altar on this singularly meaningful day of the year. Here at St. Lawrence there will be three opportunities to worship together: at 9 AM in church; at 12 noon in the parish cemetery on Lakeland Ave. (weather permitting); and at 7 PM back in the church. The evening Mass is espe-cially beautiful, as the names of those who have died from our parish this past year will be recited aloud while can-dles are lit by family and friends in attendance. I want to urge you to make time to share in one of these three litur-gies if you possibly can, even if you have been fortunate enough not to have lost a loved one this year. Death has parted all of us from someone we’ve cared for, and All Souls Day is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate our continuing love for them by praying on their behalf to the One who makes all things new. On Friday, November 2nd, help us carry on this particularly Catholic custom, and carry in your heart your hope that you will see your loved ones again. May our brother and patron, St. Lawrence, pray for us. God love you!

SUFFOLK COUNTY MARATHON
On Sunday, October 28th, Catholic Health Services will once again be sponsoring the 3rd Annual Suffolk County Marathon in support of our veterans. Montauk Highway will be closed from Patchogue to Heckscher State Park from the hours of 8:00AM until 2:00PM. As you can imagine, this creates a real challenge for our parishioners trying to get to Mass. We have been in contact with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s office, and the Suffolk Coun-ty Police Department to determine the best possible solution for our Mass schedule. So that we may accommodate parishioners as best we can, please note the following revised Mass schedule for Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th. These changes are for the weekend of the marathon ONLY.
The Mass schedule will be as follows:
Saturday, October 27th: 3:30P.M. and 5:00P.M.
Sunday, October 28th: 7:00A.M. and 5:00P.M.
On Saturday, October 27th confessions will remain at the same time (3:45-4:45) but will take place in the Bethany Center.
St. Lawrence Family Mass
9:00AM Sunday, November 4th
Hospitality will follow in the
Bethany Center after the 9:00 and 11:00AM
Masses.
This month’s hospitality is provided by Faith Formation.
Liturgy of the Word With Children Children in grades 2 through 6 are invited to par-ticipate in the Liturgy of the Word With Children at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on the following Sundays:
October 21, 28
November 11, 18 December 9, 16
During the Liturgy portion of the Mass, the chil-dren will be invited to assemble in the center aisle of the Church. They will then proceed to the Bethany Center where they will have their own Liturgy of the Word. The children will hear the Gospel reading from the Children’s Lectionary followed by a reflection suited to their age lev-el. Prior to the Communion Rite, they will return to their families for the remainder of the Mass. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to gather and hear God’s word together.

Operation Christmas
Child Could you imagine being a child who has never received a gift? Many children around the world have never even received a Christmas gift! You can change that when you pack a shoebox full of small, simple gifts for Operation Christmas Child. Brochures with complete information can be found at the doors of the church or on the web at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ. Shoeboxes should be returned to the Office of Faith Formation in the school by November 9th to be sure they reach their destination by Christmas. And remember to please pray for Operation Christmas Child. Thank you for your prayers and generosity.
Saint Lawrence Knights of Columbus want to express
their appreciation and gratitude to all those who donated at the Blood Drive on Sunday, October 14th. With the help of many,
there were 42 life-saving pints of blood collected. These donations may save up to 126 recipients.
Thanks to all who came down to make the day the success it was.
The next Blood Dive will take place on January 20, 2019.
Whether you itemize or not in 2018, this unique oppor-tunity allows you to make a charitable contribution through a direct IRA transfer while reducing your ad-justed gross income. If you would like to make a gift to our Parish using your Ira and if: 1. You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift
2. Your IRA is a traditional (some Roth IRA’s may qualify)
3. You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions You will not have to report your distribution as in-come. It will be free of federal and New York State in-come tax, and it will count toward your required mini-mum distribution (RMD). The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodi-an. Tell them you want to make a ʺqualified charitable distributionʺ. In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to our Parish. If you receive the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution. Bill has a $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute $5,000 as his yearly gift to his Parish. Up-on hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, he directs the custodian of his IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2018 directly to the Parish as the family’s 2018 gift. He will not be subject to income tax on the $5,000 donation. This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney, tax advisor or in-vestment professional.
