MARRIAGE: The Sacrament of Marr iage requires a time of spiritual preparation. According to the Common Policy adopted by the Bishops of New Jersey, this preparation requires attendance at a marriage preparation program (Pre-Cana) as well as sessions with the parish deacon or priest. Therefore, couples should make arrangements at the Parish Office one year before the planned wedding date and before finalizing any social plans.

BAPTISM OPENS THE DOOR TO THE EUCHARIST & ALL OTHER SACRAMENTS. As

the above oration states, we ask God to open the door, first to the Eucharist, and then to all other Sacraments, by which God gives us the grace we need to become Saints. We are to receive the Sacrament of First Penance before receiving Eucharist for the first time. As always, it is a good practice to come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation often. For while Confession is needed to forgive serious, grave, mortal sin, the Eucharist forgives all venial sin. The Sacrament of Reconciliation gives us the graces we need to live a holy life and to avoid sin. After Eucharist, the next sacrament received is Confirmation which completes the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation) Father Tom and I were both ordained as Deacons and then to Priesthood. Do you know the dates of your sacramental life?

WE MUST BECOME THE SACRAMENTS WE RECEIVE. Too often Sacraments are seen as ‘Kodak’ moments or customary rituals, devoid of their sacred meaning and purpose; some even believe they are our ‘just rewards’ for ‘being a good Catholic.’ But as God sees them, they are public professions of who and what we claim to be - and for which God provides the help we need to become the Sacraments. As we celebrate the Lord’s Baptism, let us renew our pledge to become whatever we have received!

A FEAST NOT ALWAYS ON

A SUNDAY? The Feast of The Baptism of the Lord,

which ends Christmastime, does not always fall on Sunday. In fact, today is the first time since 2016 that it was not moved to Monday. Why? One reason: when Christmas and New Year’s Day [technically, BVM, the holy Mother of God] fall on Sunday or Monday, the next Sunday is the EPIPHANY of the Lord, which the USA’s Bishops moved from January 6 to the first Sunday after New Year’s Day. Waiting another week to celebrate the Lord’s BAPTISM would overextend Christmastime and shorten Ordinary Time too much.

How often does this happen? Moving the Baptism of the Lord to a Monday happens slightly more than once every seven years! [The Church figured all this out long before computers!] Since we celebrate Jesus’ Baptism on a Sunday this year, I will reflect on the op-tion ‘B’ set of orations used at Masses during which a Baptism takes place in Ordinary Time.

WHEN AND WHERE WERE YOU BAPTIZED? So much is promised to us on our Baptismal day: forgiveness of all sins; entrance into God’s Kingdom; recognition as a member of Christ’s flock, His Church, etc. When and where were

you baptized? It is important to know the date of our baptisms since it is the day we entered into God’s family. Let us all hope and pray that we have lived and continue to live by “by the truth” and borne “the abundant fruits of fraternal charity!”

O God, who bring us to rebirth by the word of life, grant that, accepting it with a sincere heart,

we may be eager to live by the truth and

Caregiver Volunteers Needed Thank you to the faith community of St. Justin the Martyr, who give their time, treasure and talent to

help the elderly living in our community! Caregiver volunteers provide rides to doctor

appointments, food shopping, a friendly telephone call or a visit,

all out of the generosity of their hearts. If you can spare a few minutes or hours a month, and

January 22, 2019, will mark the 46th anniversary of the

Roe v Wade decision which legalized abortion in our

nation. This year, the annual March for Life in

Washington, D.C. will be held on Friday January 18th

There will be a bus sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 4969. Departing from St. Joseph’s Church (in front of the Food Pantry) after the 7am Mass. There will be a dinner stop on the way back (pay on your own) bring food and drink for the trip down. This year, seat reservations are $10 each which will be donated to Pro-Life. Additionally, a Mass for Life will be celebrated at the

Cathedral in Trenton at 9:30 am on January 22, 2019. Immediately following, the congregation will be invited to process to the Statehouse for the annual

Rally for Life, organized by New Jersey Right to Life. The Rally for Life will begin at 11:00 am and end at approximately 1:00 pm. Contact Mario for

SIMON’S SOUP KITCHEN Thank you for the volunteers that helped out with

serving food at Simon’s Soup Kitchen on January 8th. It was a humbling experience for all
